Nature enhanced – a decking material like no other
Millboard offers the best of both worlds in outdoor decking – the stunning look of natural timber combined with attributes that provide outstanding performance in terms of both durability and day-to-day use. It is designed to create outdoor spaces where people love to spend time.
While wood decking offers a natural look that sits well in virtually any outdoor setting, we’ve all experienced the problems that go with it: splitting, warping, rotting, staining and discolouration, and a tendency to be dangerously slippery in the wet. While there are solutions to some of these problems, they often involve expensive and environmentally unfriendly treatments, with limited effectiveness.
Unlike wood decking and conventional wood-based composite decking, Millboard does not rot, split or warp because its core is made from wood-free polyurethane combined with mineral stone to make a resin, mineral composite (RMC). Its Lastane™ surface is inspired by the non-slip soles of shoes, and provides high slip-resistance even when wet, as well as resisting the spills that would cause wood decking to stain. The whole package is resistant to sun, heat, rain and cold, making it a durable all-year-round material for outdoor environments. It can even be used underwater!
Maintenance is simple: no expensive, laborious and potentially harmful treatments are required – a wipe with soapy water is all that is needed to maintain its looks.
Millboard has a unique appearance with an astonishing similarity to real wood – it takes a very close look to realise that it is not wood. This has been achieved through exhaustive research and testing, coupled with genuine craftsmanship. Millboard is hand-moulded from real wood timbers sourced from far and wide – one example was found in the rural countryside and originates from the floor of an old French railway carriage! Many of the processes in Millboard’s manufacture are done by hand, from preparing the original timber masters for the moulds to carefully hand-colouring each Millboard length in the true-to-life, tonal shades that are its signature feature.
Millboard comes in two principal forms: Enhanced Grain and Weathered Oak. Enhanced Grain is available in six shades, and has a contemporary feel, while – as its name suggests – Weathered Oak provides a timeless, traditional look in three different shades. Each variant showcases the wood grain beautifully and can be used in styles ranging from a lime-washed beach deck to a charred look reminiscent of the Japanese shou-sugi-ban te.
While all Millboard is resistant to algae and offers superb anti-slip properties, for those areas where the ultimate non-slip surface is required there is LastaGrip. Constructed from the same materials and by the same processes as other Millboard, it has a textured design that offers exceptionally high slip-resistance, without the rough feel of conventional gritted strip boards.
The Millboard range includes complementary fascia and edging, a unique sub-frame system and a comprehensive range of fixtures and fittings. Unique, hidden decking fixings make installing Millboard simple. There’s no pre-drilling, counter sinking or clip fixings needed – just screw them in and see them disappear as the self-healing Lastane surface flexes back over the fixing, leaving a virtually indistinguishable mark and creating a cleaner finish.
From an environmental perspective, Millboard is focused on continued sustainability and is the first premium outdoor flooring company in the world to have its carbon footprint independently verified and UKAS accredited, to the international standard ISO 14064-1 Verified Carbon Footprint Assurance Mark.
All of Millboard’s design and manufacture is carried out here in the UK; there’s no pressure on hardwood resources, and no extended cargo trips to harm the environment.
In addition to its environmental credentials, Millboard is the only decking material in the UK to have earned the coveted British Board of Agrément. Ongoing rigorous product testing and assessment, including by independent testing houses such as BBA, BRE and Satra, is conducted to ensure that its leading-edge quality is maintained.
All of which goes to make Millboard a premium decking material that can be used in virtually any situation, including many where wood decking would be highly impractical. It has been used in many high-profile projects, from London’s Floating Pocket Park (a public outdoor garden that literally floats on the water in a redeveloped canal basin) to a luxury home in Mallorca designed by Gras Architects and shortlisted for the 2017 ‘House of the Year’ award at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Berlin. Clients range from homeowners to local authorities, hotel chains, department stores and housebuilders.
Millboard creates outdoor spaces where people love to live life outside. As the leading brand in non-wood decking with an authentic wood look, the Millboard brand is trusted by customers across the UK and beyond. Underpinned by an unrivalled degree of product testing and quality control, it offers the assurance of enhancement that lasts for decades with only the most minimal upkeep required.
