Safety Nets

Guardrails are ideal for lower-level falls. These guardrails have been constructed to withstand forces up to 200 pounds without failing. For heights less than 25 feet, having scaffolding with guardrails can be the best option available. Even better, some systems can either come with guardrails in place or have them added after the fact. Even falls from seemingly harmless heights can wind up having grave consequences, so don’t skip past this safety measure on the job site.

Other Equipment

Those may be the main forms of fall protection, but that’s not where it ends. Positioning devices – like anchorage systems, harnesses, and body belts – can be ideal for preventing falls of all sorts. There are different versions available depending on the height and the environment in which they are being used. Basically, anything more than two feet should have some kind of positioning device involved.

Warning line systems are a must as well. It is a flagged line that ultimately traces around the perimeter of a roof or raised work surface. Though it may see simple, it is a warning that edges are nearby. Simply being aware of those edges can be great for preventing falls and these should be installed at least 6 feet from the edge (10 feet when mechanical equipment is in use).

Finally, make sure openings are covered. Roofs, skylights, floors, and other areas should be covered to prevent falling through. These covers are capable of supporting ample weight without the risk of falling through.

Flat roof glazing systems such as flat glass roof lights, roof lanterns, polycarbonate domes and automatic opening vent (AOV) rooflights are most typically installed in flat roof extensions at the rear of residential properties; but are also very common in education and healthcare applications.

When working with flat roof glass systems, installers must be aware of the relevant standards relating to roof glazing, which include guidance on maximum allowable deflections and stresses for overhead glazing. Fragile rooflights in particular can be a major hazard, as some are difficult to see in certain light conditions and others may be hidden by paint.

The report, ‘A Year On: Revisiting Changes to Part F & Part L’, was commissioned by HBD in association with a number of key industry manufactures including Keylite Roof Windows (Keylite). It explored UK housebuilders’ attitudes to the changes and the impact the new regulations had made on projects and buying habits.

The modifications to Part L include guidelines for the energy performance of roof windows, ensuring housebuilders specify appropriate glazing and insulation standards to minimise heat loss in all projects.

Glass

Fire resistant glass, also known as fire rated glass, typically refers to specialist glazing and fittings that are designed to provide protection if a fire occurs. Any fire proof windows or similar solutions that are able to resist temperatures in excess of 870°C will secure the correct rating and provide optimum safety to buildings.

When it comes to manufacturing fire resistant windows, it’s important to understand that when toughened glass hits a certain temperature, it is likely to break. Intumescent layers are added as they swell in extreme heat, and not only will this hold broken pieces in place, but it will also provide insulation to stop both heat and smoke from filtering into other rooms and causing further issues.

Classifications will typically be made for fire resistant glass based on the glazing’s integrity period and how long it acts as an effective barrier (which is known as the insulation period). These will be shown as an ‘E’ rating. It’s important to know that E denotes integrity only, EI covers both integrity and insulation, while EW has integrity and some level of heat resistance.

Aluminium frames and fixtures

When it comes to aluminium frames and fixtures, no other material is quite as fireproof. This is because the metal has a natural oxide layer that stops oxygen reactions, providing a non-flammable solution that won’t produce sparks or release smoke when faced with fire. It does have a melting point when temperatures hit around 750-800°C.

Of course, safety is the key advantage when selecting fire rated windows and fire protection systems for buildings. Structured around a brand-new overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work, the document provides unique clarification on where the architectural ironmonger can add value at each stage of this industry-standard model for the design and construction of buildings.

Published by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the RIBA Plan of Work organises the process of briefing, designing, constructing and operating building projects into eight stages, to ensure that all aspects of the project are considered and addressed. Numbered 0 to 7, each stage represents a phase in the project lifecycle and explains the outcomes, core tasks and information exchanges required at each stage.

Taking each stage in turn, the GAI’s new guide helps architects and designers identify the ways in which GAI Registered Professionals can help them meet requirements for the demonstration of professional competence, the Golden Thread of information, and the functional, performance, and design considerations raised by architectural ironmongery scheduling.

Moving beyond the design stages, it then illustrates how the architectural ironmonger can help ensure great design is turned into effective and compliant supply, installation, handover and long-term outcomes.
