Leading powder coatings company, Thermaset Limited, based in Tamworth, Staffordshire, has launched a new suite of product brochures.

The new range of individual A4 size publications covers Thermaset’s specification brochures for its Spectra range and Ripple Finishes, a description of its Hygienilac Antibacterial powder coatings and a Stock Range brochure.

The specification brochures include four pages of product samples demonstrating the extensive ranges of RAL colours and finishes available. The Spectra range from Thermaset is new to the market and is a collection of diverse finishes which are an exciting alternative to standard RAL and BS colours.

Thermaset’s tactile ripple finishes are also imaginatively presented demonstrating their decorative qualities for applications such as shop fittings, garage doors, office equipment and much more.

The Hygienilac Antibacterial brochure gives the reader the full low down on this UV stable anti-bacterial product which does not employ silver technology. “No matter the project, keeping a consistent flow of high quality drinking water is vital in order to ensure the comfort and convenience of a building’s occupants. Regardless of whether you’re starting from scratch, renovating or refurbishing, installing a Vivreau drinking water system makes this a simple task to undertake.

The Vivreau LinkLine system offers a unique solution where a solitary, compact unit is installed in a plant room area and can service individual tea points with purified chilled still, sparkling or even instant boiling hot water over numerous floors .  This eliminates the  need to install separate refrigeration technology at various locations around the building – which can not only be detrimental to expenditure on a new building, but also these units can appear cumbersome and detract from high quality finishes

A system like LinkLine can make newly built or refurbished buildings all that more appealing in an aesthetic, economical and environmental sense. Utilising the LinkLine system to distribute water to numerous Vi Tap outlets across multiple floors, architects are able to provide a service that’s 45% more cost effective than installing multiple individual units, whilst also being up to  55% more energy efficient, and attractive to boot.

Designed to continuously re-circulate the water around the pipes, freshness is guaranteed on every floor. And, with the LinkLine’s unique Control Management System (CMS), the performance of the LinkLine’s Master Control Unit (MCU) is monitored, as well as the flow and dispense of water at various outlets throughout the building.

It ensures optimum performance of the system particularly as each MCU controls multiple drinking water dispense points in one building. It is also used as an aid to the onside technical/vending team to monitor the performance of the system enabling immediate action to be taken if required.

Featuring high performance Ice Bank refrigeration technology, which is capable of delivering very high volumes of chilled water, LinkLine offers a range of additional benefits including a power saving option to reduce electricity consumption and anti-flood detection system.”

Luxury building firm Oakland Projects recently helped to put back the Spring back into ViSpring, the company that is renowned as the world’s leading mattress and bed supplier. ViSpring has just completed a major rebranding complete with a new logo which will help take the premier bed company into orbit.

As part of the rebranding one important task was the complete refitting of ViSpring’s retail display area situated in the basement section of And So To Bed at its flagship outlet in Chelsea, central London. And So to Bed is a prestigious slumber specialist with over 30 stores throughout the UK.

As the Kings Road outlet is open seven days a week it was important that the refurbishment project be completed with the minimum disruption and within the shortest period possible. To achieve its aims ViSpring called in London based Oakland Projects, a company that has worked closely with both ViSpring and And So to Bed over the past five years.

Just six weeks was allowed for the completion of the project, which included demolition of interior walls and ceilings and the stripping out of all electrical wiring, the installation of new walls, ceilings, wiring, flooring and decoration, all to be completed as quietly as possible so as not to disturb customers  overhead.

The 3,000 sq ft area was fitted out with new plasterboard ceiling and walls finished in white and two-tone grey while the floor was completed using bleached oak. A hi tech lighting system was also installed with new graphics and light boxes with dimmable lighting schemes to match the 16 bed themes,  which included light new fabrics.

The work was completed on time for the new launch for the rebranding of the ViSpring company name and new logo to confirm the company’s position as the number one luxury bed and mattress supplier in the world with beds costing anything from £3,000 to £80,000. The new display area now features 16 bed displays with new beds, mattresses, fabrics, head boards and divan bases with ambient lighting designed to make customers feel at home.

With nearly 30 years’ practical experience, covering all market sectors, Oakland Projects has the benefit of a nationwide labour force. The company specialises in luxury construction, fit-outs, upgrades, extensions and refurbishment programmes with a realistic work schedule for all clients.

Oakland Projects now features a new website which showcases the company’s luxury building company’s impressive range of services, including bespoke shop fitting contracts. You can now view the company at www.oaklandprojects.co.uk or email info@oaklandprojects.co.uk

Following its formation in May 2015, Springer Nature – a new educational publishing brand – enlisted the services of Signbox to help create a vibrant new work environment for the company’s offices in London.

The sign specialist’s proposition comprised a host of bespoke signage and visual communication including wayfinding, directory, statutory, display graphics and glass manifestations across three buildings during a four-stage process.

The result of a merger between Springer Science+Business Media with the majority of Macmillan Science and Education, Springer Nature aims to become a major force in scientific, scholarly, professional and educational publishing and required a corporate office environment that would help stimulate and drive this vision.

Fit out contractor, ISG Interiors, was quick to recommend long-term partner Signbox and collaborated with the project architect, Broadway Malyan, as well as Springer Nature’s in-house designers, to develop a signage brief for Signbox. The latter responded with a comprehensive signage package, which included innovative systems composed of high quality materials that effectively visualise the brief and meet Springer Nature’s new brand guidelines.

Springer Nature_Brand Signage

The end result is a range of signage and applied graphics that offers a clean design based around the red, blue and white colour palette of the Springer Nature logo and an engaging campaign theme that focuses on ‘curiosity’ – which included work by a world famous street artist.

Signbox’s signage solution included:

– Corporate signage incorporating the company’s distinctive brand logo, featuring raised 3D lettering behind reception desk
– Suspended departmental signage that hung from the ceiling via robust rare-earth magnets to remove the need for drilling into the ceiling tiles
– Colourful ‘graffiti-style’ glass manifestations on exterior windows by the office entrance to draw attention from passers-by, and frosted interior glass manifestations on office windows for occupant privacy
– High quality wide format graphics of abstract imagery applied to office walls and breakout areas in communal spaces
– Wall displays featuring inspirational quotes from Albert Einstein and eye-catching cut-out designs
– Clear directories for individual floors, wayfinding signage for multiple areas such as cloakrooms and printers, as well as statutory signage for compliancy

“We were keen to enlist Signbox as we had successfully worked with the team on a previous brand signage and wayfinding system that was very well received,” explains Antony Johnson, Creative Director of BrandGuild, one of the project’s interior designers. “They’re naturally collaborative and forthcoming with valuable advice and we consider them an integral part of our brand implementation team.”

Springer Nature_Curiousity

Highlighting a key example of Signbox’s on-site improvisation to tackle problems, Johnson adds: “We had certain issues regarding the replacement of signage on a problematic substrate that could not be easily repaired. Neil helped us get to a solution which was practical, but also distinctive. I have constantly been impressed and reassured by Signbox’s performance, and on the back of that positive experience I have already recommended the company to two other design colleagues working for other agencies.”

Springer Nature_Internal Graphics

Mark Bartlett, Managing Director, Signbox comments: “As Springer Nature is a new company, all the design teams in this project were essentially presented with a clean canvas with which to help construct and implement the client’s brand identity. These types of office fit outs, while exciting, are also very challenging. You’re helping the client to set the tone of their brand identity at an early and vital stage of their development, and as such it’s paramount that every step in the process is meticulously thought out and executed.

“From working closely with the client, ISG, Broadway Malyan and the other sub-contractors – such as BrandGuild – to  the actual creation and installation of the signage systems, our whole team had to be on top of their game to create a stunning environment for Springer Nature’s employees and visitors. Everyone involved is delighted with the end-result.”

A South Yorkshire laser cutting specialist has teamed up with decorative lighting experts Northern Lights to create a dazzling feature in one of the country’s busiest shopping malls.

Cutting Technologies, based in Barnsley, laser cut 6,400 delicate shapes which are now captivating shoppers in a stunning display in Meadowhall’s Upper Mall.

The concept was designed by Wakefield-based interior designers The Harris Partnership, who approached Chesterfield-based Northern Lights to bring their idea to life.

The Cutting Technologies team was then given the job of laser cutting the thousands of abstract shapes from clear Perspex™ and shiny stainless steel, which twinkle as they catch the light and give the impression of falling leaves cascading from the centre’s iconic glass roof. Eight sculptures were installed in the main hall with a further two at the mall entrance.

Jane Robinson, co-founder and director at Cutting Technologies, said: “It’s always a pleasure to work on Northern Lights’ fantastic projects, and the delicate nature of this one’s design is perfect for laser cutting. Our recent investment in state of the art technology, including two Fiber lasers, makes jobs like these easier than ever.

“It’s great to have such a stunning showcase for the combined skills of the two companies right on our doorsteps, and good for staff at both firms to be able to show off their talents locally.”

Paul Wade, Managing Director at Northern Lights, added: “We’ve worked with Cutting Technologies on a range of projects now, some as far afield as Dubai. But it’s been good to work on a project a little closer to home this time.

“Cutting Technologies always offers us a first rate service and understand the challenges of the design process. It makes our lives much easier to work with laser cutting specialists who combine engineering expertise with a good grasp of design and aesthetics.”

Cutting Technologies is a growing laser cutting and engraving firm that produces work for household names such as Rekorderlig, Mulberry and Puma and artists like Antony Gormley and Conrad Shawcross. The company has invested £1.25m over the past year in top of the range machinery, making it one of the best equipped laser firms in the country.

Northern Lights is a leading designer and manufacturer of lighting solutions for hospitality and retail. Its work can be seen worldwide in venues such as Hilton Hotels, Costa Coffee, Pizza Express and Jamie Oliver’s restaurants.

Flexenergy’s energy-saving Flexalen pipe was the ideal solution for Plymouth City Council when a new district heating scheme meant re-routing the pipe network from new gas boilers to serve offices in the Council House.

The Civic Centre, located alongside the Council House, had a gas boiler system which served the council offices. The Civic Centre is being serviced separately to enable its disposal for re-development. The Council House will now be fed from the new Guildhall boiler installation via the underground heating pipework.

Plymouth City Council specified Flexalen polybutylene pre-insulated pipe for the project – choosing the technology for its enhanced thermal properties, low embodied carbon, ease of installation and 50 year performance warranty. Contractors ECS have installed the network comprising of 31in no 12 metre lengths of pipework and 16 pre-fabricated bends, insulation kits and stub flanges.

Polybutylene is the only plastic pipe heat network system that can be fully fusion welded. This, together with its proven longevity, was a key factor in laying the 372 metres of pipe from the Guildhall, across a pedestrianised area to the Council House.

Moreover, the environmentally-friendly attributes of the pipe’s Pb technology and its low carbon manufacture, also helped meet sustainability goals, which were very important considerations given that the scheme is set to include biomass energy generation in due course.

Plymouth City Council expects the upgraded heating system to save £10,000 a year through energy efficiency, thereby optimising its whole life investment in district heating – savings achieved in part through Flexenergy’s environmentally-friendly, low carbon pipe technology and network design.

Ingeny has introduced a highly-effective retrofit home automation system that effortlessly optimises levels of comfort, safety and energy efficiency, but can be fitted without causing damage to a property’s interior. It uses advanced wireless technology to create an integrated solution that can be up and running quickly and efficiently, removing the need to run new cables and keeping costly installation requirements to a minimum.

Taking advantage of Z-Wave wireless technology, which operates a “mesh network” that uses repeating signals, Ingeny can deliver a reliable automation solution throughout a building at a fraction of the cost of a traditional fully-wired solution. The solution includes a wide range of sensors, control modules and wall plugs to communicate with a system processor to monitor and manage all aspects of the home environment.

The system can be individually-tailored to take into consideration personal taste and meet communications, comfort and security preferences. This not only ensures complete control at the tap of a touchscreen, smartphone or tablet, but also means complementary systems can work seamlessly together to control lighting and heating, energy management, CCTV, blinds and curtains, smoke detection and entertainment requirements.

The non-evasive installation procedures means the wired control modules and wireless, battery powered sensors can be fitted in a matter of minutes, requiring no additional wiring and drilling. In fact, the sensors have a battery-life of up to five years, so can be put anywhere and attached with a single screw, self-adhesive strip or just placed on a surface.

Nick Moore, General Manager of Ingeny commented: “We work with industry-leading partners, such as Fibaro and QMotion, to take advantage of the latest and most sophisticated wires-free home automation technologies currently available. This combined with our extensive experience designing, installing and maintaining smart building solutions means we are best-placed to create advanced retrofit solutions that meet your entertainment, communications, comfort and security preferences.”

Ingeny is a division of security systems and building technology integrator Interphone, a company with over 50 years of experience in designing, installing and maintaining electronic control technology. This unique background makes Ingeny best-placed to understand the precise home automation needs of property developers, architects, interior designers and home owners, enabling it to create complete and joined-up solutions from design and consultation through to installation and ongoing support.

Not only are Living Wall installations good for health, wellbeing and the environment; it would appear that they offer a level of tax efficiency which very few people in business would know, according to David Rees, expert in Capital Allowances, and a spokesperson from living wall specialist, ANS Global.

David Rees explains: “In essence when a taxpayer spends money on commercial property then items which qualify as fixed plant & machinery will be eligible to have their cost written down over time against the profits generated from that building.

“The profits might simply be in the form of rental received by an investor, or in the case of an owner-occupier or tenant, the trading profits of their business.

“What qualifies for relief is subject to various tests – but in simple terms tax relief is not available on structures, but on the systems and fit-out that go into a building for the purposes of the business

“A Living Wall installation would therefore not form part of the structure but is fixed to a permanent wall. It is likely in most instances that the entire cost of a Living Wall could qualify for relief.”

As a General Plant item, the cost of a Living Wall would be written down at a rate of 18% per annum. This however, does not take account of the current Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) which stands at £500,000 and means that for any claim up to that figure, the entire cost is claimed in that year. Thus if a Living Wall installation costs less than £500,000 then the full cost would be set against tax in that year.

“The value of the cash saving depends on the rate of tax being paid – a company paying 20% would save £100,000 from its AIA. A partnership or individual paying 40% would see those savings double.”

A spokesperson at ANS Global concludes, “If you are considering a Living Wall installation then a preliminary review of the possible tax savings can be provided at no cost. It could effectively be seen as a government subsidy for creating a healthier environment.”

Signbox has just completed a small but complex wayfinding project at the popular Wellington Mills housing co-operative in London, SE1. Originally the mill site of John Oakey & Sons Ltd, a manufacturer of abrasives and sandpaper; the estate has an extensive history and records show that in the 1700’s a female orphanage stood on the site.

In 1970, architect Barbara Bienias was commissioned by the Greater London Council to create the separate buildings that make up the existing estate. The construction took 6 years and it has remained part of the housing co-operative ever since.

Signbox competitively tendered the signage project as part of a general improvements scheme underway at Wellington Mills. Our bid involved the design, manufacture and install of a bespoke wayfinding solution to create an easier means of navigating the estates buildings and surrounding spaces.

The core of the project called for a consistent wayfinding strategy throughout the estate by rationalising the quantity of signage.

The designs were subject to a review process by the housing association and relevant stakeholders. The feedback on our design submittals centred on the strong history of Wellington Mills and it was essential to retain key visual elements from the original typography and branding.

Wellington Mills 2 Wellington Mills 1

All the signs were fabricated by Signbox at our Egham workshops, constructed from powder coated aluminium to Pantone matched colours and finished with matt laminated external grade vinyl graphics.

Amanda Culpin, a resident of Wellington Mills commented – “Did I say, lovely signs? Now I finally know where I am. Thanks, also to your patient designers at Signbox

Mark Bartlett, Signbox’s Managing Director, comments: “It was inspiring to play a key role in the integrated rebranding project of Wellington Mills. We are proud to have supported a housing association with such a strong heritage.”

Rubble sacks and FIBC bags are hugely popular in the sector

Kite Packaging, the UK’s leading packaging supplier, has launched a range of bags to benefit the building, construction and landscaping industry.

The first product in the range, FIBC bags, are made from woven polypropylene and can be loaded with up to 1 tonne of product. Most suited to dry, free-flowing products, they have strong lifting handles to be used with a crane or forklift.

FIBC Bags are essential for builders, construction workers and landscapers, as they provide the superior strength and tear resistance of a rigid container, but are much easier to transport. Mostly used for storage, the bags can also make a great replacement for skips to collect building rubbish.

Kite has also launched a range of Rubble Sacks for a similar marketplace, as part of their aim to offer the building industry a ‘one-stop shop’ for packaging products. The new sacks come in three different colours, and are all manufactured from 125 micron thick material.

Providing incredible burst resistance against sharp and bulky items, rubble sacks are often used on building sites or during landscaping jobs to collect heavy waste products such as broken bricks, timber, and plaster.

What’s more, the bags from Kite are made from recycled material so that they are less harmful to the environment, and have been competitively sourced – prices start at just 12.5p a sack!

FIBC- Bag-4

The company hope that this will open up their prospective customer base, and now have a well-rounded offering for the construction industry which will only continue to grow.

Reports from Allergy UK estimate that at least 12 million people up and down the country are allergic to their own home. ‘Sick building syndrome’ has been identified as a genuine health condition used to describe symptoms such as nausea, headaches and tiredness that are linked to people spending time inside certain buildings.

Volatile Organic Compounds – or VOCs as they’re often known – are invisible gases that can lead to many health problems.

The Scientific Committee on Health and Environmental Risks calculates there are up to 900 chemicals in indoor air, with negative side-effects much more common in properties without adequate ventilation. In fact, figures from the Environmental Protection Agency show the air inside homes could be 70 per cent more polluted than it is outdoors!

After certain activities such as cleaning and stripping paint, VOC levels could be as much as 1,000 times higher than background outdoor levels, making the need to limit exposure even more important. With many people planning home renovations and spring cleaning at this time of year, the risks to homeowners are greater than ever.

VOCs originate from a wide range of sources including cosmetics, air fresheners and permanent markers. While not much can be done about gases being emitted in the first place, homeowners can take steps to protect themselves and their families.

Peter Haynes, Product Manager at ventilation specialist EnviroVent, said: “Exposure to these gases poses a real threat to homeowners and most of the time, they don’t even realise it.

“VOCs can be found in everything from office equipment to items of furniture.  Having an effective ventilation system fitted to dilute and control VOCs in the home can certainly help.”

Homeowners are taking action against the effect of poor indoor air quality and EnviroVent has seen an increase in demand for Positive Input Ventilation systems.

EnviroVent’s Mr Venty ECO2 ventilation system minimises pollutants in the home by supplying a constant stream of fresh filtered air that’s drawn in from the outside atmosphere.

VOCs may affect homeowners throughout the year, but some sufferers of seasonal health conditions, such as hay fever and pollen allergies, have noticed improvements in their condition when an effective ventilation system is fitted. A PIV system from EnviroVent supplies fresh air into the home and helps to control pollutants entering the indoor atmosphere, which can have a positive impact on health.  EnviroVent’s PIV systems also reduce humidity levels in the home, which helps to reduce condensation and mould growth.

For more information on effective ventilation solutions, contact EnviroVent by visiting the website www.envirovent.com or by calling 0345 272 7807.

Smart home systems specialists Cyberhomes will be exhibiting on Stand L230 of the May Design Series at London ExCel from 17–19th May. Here, experts will be on hand to discuss the exciting opportunities and fresh challenges of this fast moving technology for architects, interior designers, building services consultants and developers.

As one of the UK’s few approved Savant dealers, Cyberhomes will have a working demonstration of a Savant control system at the May Design Series, as well as the brand new Samsung 78″ 4K Ultra HD TV.

They will be discussing design possibilities offered by the latest lighting systems and how smart home components, such as speakers, can be concealed or designed-in while optimising acoustic performance – all as part of an integrated interior scheme.

The potential for the latest smart technology to deliver improved comfort levels, lower energy use and optimisation of renewable sources, and its growing impact on building design will also be explored.

Cyberhomes have been designing and installing award-winning smart home systems for over 10 years, including multi-room audio and video, lighting control, CCTV and security, occupancy simulation, climate controls and data networks, as well as complete home cinemas.

Integration is central to Cyberhomes’ approach and an involvement from the start of a project key to helping realise the designer’s concepts, while delivering technical performance at the same time. This is also true of ensuring that the building is designed to accommodate the latest home automation systems.

The Cyberhomes Stand L230 is next to CEDIA, which Cyberhomes is a member of, and visitors to the stand will have the chance to win an iPad mini.

EOS Facades are delighted to announce that they have been selected as finalists of not one, but three East Midlands Celebrating Construction Awards. EOS have been shortlisted for the following categories – ‘Innovation Award’, ‘Value Award’ and ‘BIM Project of the Year’ for their contribution to ‘The Barn, University of Nottingham.’

The Barn was created in response to the University of Nottingham’s 2008 masterplan for the 100-acre Sutton Bonington campus – to establish a new amenities building which would unite the previously separate student and staff facilities so that are accessible under one roof, improving the user’s experience.

EOS Facades were appointed as the steel framing systems (SFS) supplier for the project – this included a comprehensive design package and the manufacture and supply SFS.

Throughout the project, EOS Facades took every step possible to innovate and add real value. They significantly reduced programme times through offsite manufacturing, ensured the block was value-engineered from blockwork to steel framing systems and ensured the frame was weather-tight to allow for follow on trades to move onto site faster. EOS worked with the project delivery team throughout the process to ensure The Barn was delivered to the highest standard.

Steve Thompson, Managing Director of EOS Facades commented on the announcement: “This has been a fantastic boost for the team, we are very proud of the part EOS Facades played in this development and it would be great to win such an accolade”.

When asked to comment on the project, Professor Sir David Greenaway, Vice-Chancellor of The University of Nottingham said: “As our award-winning campuses continue to grow and develop, it is essential that we incorporate new buildings that fit comfortably in our landscapes and reflect the needs of our students. The Barn is an outstanding new addition to our Sutton Bonington Campus. It complements and enriches the look and feel of Sutton Bonington, whilst providing our students with a superb facility which they will be able to enjoy for years to come.”

The inaugural East Midlands Awards will be taking place at the Nottingham Belfry on the 19th June 2015 where the industry will come together to celebrate the best of the East Midlands region.
