An ambitious regeneration scheme at Greenwich Peninsula in London is showing off its green credentials with a sophisticated insulated render façade from Aliva UK.

The development by Wates Construction is one of the largest schemes in Europe, bringing thousands of new jobs, state-of-the-art new homes and a vibrant community to the area on the banks of the Thames near the O2 Arena.

Architects Jestico + Whiles asked Aliva, the UK leader in façades and interior finishes for a cost effective yet aesthetically pleasing finish to an eight storey residential block of 240 apartments. Forty per cent of them are affordable housing.

Aliva supplied 5,500sqm of white acrylic TermoK8 insulated render to give the buildings a crisp, pared-back look that brought the project in on budget. The installers were Regency Plastering.

The architects said: “We chose Aliva for Greenwich Peninsula because they provide a successful selection from a high quality, through coloured acrylic render system. The finish needed to provide a calm, understated composition, which has been achieved beautifully with a very neat, crisp finish throughout the elements of render within the development.”

Aliva UK Managing Director James Ormerod said: “The project needed a fresh look, which made our acrylic insulated render system an ideal solution. The project was challenging due to the scaffold access. Despite this there are no visible joints, ensuring a slick, clean finish that delighted the client. As INCA members we will be submitting the project to the upcoming new build awards.”

Insulated render is one of the most effective and efficient ways of improving a building’s thermal performance – reducing heating costs by up to a staggering 40%.

Cedral Click has transformed an ordinary extension at the Pritchard at Live & Let Live cafe / bar in Chepstow into a spectacular example of vertically-fixed weatherboarding.

Cedral Click’s ability to be fixed vertically or horizontally allowed the designers to visually elongate the height of the first floor extension, giving it a more pleasing proportion in relation to the larger main building.

Marley Eternit’s Cedral Click is the UK’s first and only fibre cement flush fitting tongue and groove cladding product and is offered in a range of attractive colours.

Cafe / bar owner Paula Smith chose Grey Brown as this complemented the muted colours used on the exterior masonry walls and window frames.

Paula was so impressed with Cedral Click’s aesthetics that she incorporated it in the interior design scheme by using it to clad the bar. Again, the Cedral Click colours were chosen to complement shades used for the internal walls.

Paula became aware of Cedral Click’s appeal, durability and low maintenance properties after a discussion with Axion Consultants, the project architects. Together they decided that Cedral Click was the most visually attractive and durable cladding for Pritchard at Live and Let Live.

Marley Eternit Cedral - Live and let live

“I’m so pleased with Cedral Click because it creates a traditional feel and makes the building look much more balanced,” said Paula. “It’s great to know that it has a 50 year life span and offers low maintenance – this was important to us because customers form an impression of what’s inside by how the building looks on the outside.”

Marley Eternit Cedral - Live and let live 2

As easy to work with as timber but with the durability of a fibre cement based product, Cedral Click has good resistance to fire* and is dimensionally stable.

Marley Eternit also offers Cedral Lap weatherboard, a more traditional, clapper board aesthetic where the planks overlap. Both Cedral Click and Cedral Lap are made from fibre cement, which ensures low maintenance and a life expectancy of 50 years.

Bracknell Roofing’s industry skills and expertise sees challenging superstore roof project completed in just 14 weeks

Roofing Specialist Bracknell Roofing has played a lead role in the construction of a new multimillion pound supermarket which saw the roofing specialist complete the entire roof works in just 14 weeks.

Bracknell’s expertise and industry leading skills were deployed during the build of a new ASDA superstore in Ware, Hertfordshire, where a striking roof area spanning 3,200m2 was created.

Appointed by MACE to carry out the works, Bracknell Roofing’s team of experts from its Special Projects Division worked closely with the contractor to achieve the quality aesthetics that the project demanded.

The roof build consisted of the development of 2000m2 of slated mansard roof, a 400m2 tiled lantern style roof and 800m2 of new slating on an existing building at the previously dis-used site, which now serves as the back of house for the main store.

500x250mm natural slates were specified to create a striking design on the new mansard roof and for the slating on the back of house area, while Marley Eternit’s Acme Heather Blend – a single camber clay tile, ideal for low pitch roofs – were incorporated on the lantern roofs.  An insulated tile support panel system from Kingspan was also incorporated into areas of the roof to ensure a long-term weather proof solution for the building.

As well as installing the entire roof covering, Bracknell’s expert team also installed the trussed rafter structure, along with the UPVC fascia and soffit and aluminium PPC rainwater gutters and downpipes.

Due to the size of the project and the crucial time-frame for the roof construction, Bracknell had to overcome a number of logistical challenges – not least ensuring the safety and productivity of the 300 construction workers on site at any one time and navigating heavy traffic around the site. To ensure the delivery of a high quality roof on time and in budget, Bracknell Roofing deployed two specialist teams; one to focus on the trusses, fascia, soffit and rainwater gutters and the other to complete slating, tiling and the installation of support panels.

Chris Broadhead, Project Manager at MACE, comments: “Due to the demanding timescale and nature of the work required, we needed a roofing specialist that could deliver a high-quality aesthetic result on schedule. The industry skills and expertise offered by Bracknell Roofing are evident in the ASDA project, which was completed in time for the store’s Spring 2015 opening, to a high quality of workmanship and to the great satisfaction of our client.”

Bracknell Roofing’s Special Projects Division is dedicated to delivering high quality roofs to all types of commercial buildings.

Peter Edwards, National Project Manager at Bracknell Roofing, adds: “This project is a prime example of how the specification of the right roofing materials can provide a striking finish to any commercial build. However, we also understand that the time of installation is crucial for all sites. We pride ourselves on delivering the right level of expertise and quality workmanship in the right timeframes in all of our projects, which has been demonstrated by our teams involved in this ambitious build.”

Bracknell Roofing is part of the Etex Group, a major European construction company, and works as both a principal contractor and sub-contractor on a range of commercial and housing projects.

By re-using 12-year-old SSQ Riverstone slates from the original build, a bungalow in Falmouth, Cornwall has undergone a complete rebuild whilst preserving the original look of the roof.

The new owners of the property decided they wanted to replace the loft space with an additional floor, accommodating three bedrooms. Upon discovering how old the walls of the building were however they decided to rebuild the structure from the ground up, preserving 12-year-old Riverstone slates from the existing roof in order to complete the new build.

Paul Marks of Marnick Roofing said: “The bungalow was built around the 1960’s and the walls had deteriorated, so the new owners decided to rebuild rather than just add to the structure.

“They really liked the look of SSQ’s Riverstone slate that was already on the roof and after finding it had been on there for 12 years already and still looked great, we decided to re-use the slates since they clearly offered a reliable, long lasting roofing option that would retain the look and feel of the property once rebuilt. The new build also has a steeper roof pitch than before so it was good to see the slate was able to adapt to the new demands too.”

Offering a 100 year guarantee on its Riverstone slate, SSQ is confident that its slate will really stand the test of time, preserving the natural appearance associated with slate. With only a handful of sources known worldwide, SSQ’s Riverstone slate is one of very few top quality phylitte slates available. Its unique satin-like lustre makes it a frequent choice for prestigious projects over the world.

Commenting on the Falmouth project, Haroun El-Helw, Head of Marketing said: “It’s great to see the Riverstone slates originally installed on the property 12 years ago being re-used – with the original guarantee still valid, that gives the slates a minimum remaining service life of 88 years. It’s fair to say that many alternative roofing materials may not have stood the test of time quite so well!”

Leading rooflight supplier, Whitesales, has announced that it will now be supplying standard stock sizes of their Em-Glaze Modular Ridgelights.

The Em-Glaze Modular Ridgelight range from Whitesales has been specifically designed and engineered to create the ideal ridgeline skylight into building designs.

The new stock – with six standard sizes available for fast delivery – feature unfaltering structural strength, elegant low-profile framework and increased glazing to maximise the amount of natural light penetrating the interior.

The design success is the result of the maximum-daylight, minimal-frame ethos that’s applied across the Em-Glaze range. Extremely slim aluminium framework ensures that the glazing – the area that really matters to the building occupants – is the primary feature.

WS Ridgelight 3

Structural integrity is the most important factor in any construction material and the ridgelight has been engineered to comply with severe weather ratings – including wind loads of 1.32 Kn/m2 and snow loads of 1.0 kn/m2. In simple terms, the ridgelight will withstand the worst conditions the UK ever faces, including in coastal regions. The BBA, who conducted the tests, even stated that the loads were the highest ever tested on a conservatory-style roof.

With safety assured, Whitesales’ engineers focused on sustainability and versatility. The potential for solar gain is easily offset with a choice of fixed, permanent and adjustable ventilation options and a blue solar tint option. Acoustic and thermal insulation, already exceeding regulations, can be enhanced with triple glazing for even better environmental performance.

WS Ridgelight 1

The Em-Glaze Ridgelight’s elegant low-profile frame can blend into the background or be specified in a wide range of RAL colours to create a dramatic design statement. The interior-facing frame can even be specified in a different colour to the exterior.

Whitesales’ Ridgelights can be ordered from stock in one of the six standard sizes or made to measure for a fully bespoke design, ensuring the perfect fit for your building project.

Traditional flat roofs have long been the bane of the building industry. They are slow to install requiring three layers of roofing felt with each having to be sealed and finished with messy hot tar.The finished roof is extremely heavy, adding deadweight to the roofing timbers causing dips in the ply or chipboard which causes ponding after rain adding more weight and possible damage. So no wonder a felt roof can leak after just a few years.

But now bespoke building and refurbishment company, Oakland Projects, has introduced a new concept in flat roofing. Working with manufacturers and trusted clients the company has developed the most modern approach to the problem, while adding a little light to the subject.

Paul Sundborg, Operations Director of Oakland Projects, explained. “We have been installing super light yet extremely strong fibreglass flat roof structures that are so reliable and leak free that we can also fit them with attractive skylights providing an extra ambience to an otherwise plain roof setting.

Oakland Projects Roofing Pic 1

“Fibreglass roofs can be quickly and cleanly installed by our experienced fitters in much less time than traditional but old fashioned felters. But even more important is the load bearing weight. Where a felted roof area would have a load weight of say 1.5 tons the equivalent weight of a 3mm fibreglass roof installed by our roofers is just 80kg, (176lb). These roofs have been tried and tested by us. We believe they are the modern way forward in flat roofing design and technology,” he added.

Fibreglass roofs can be fitted with frameless skylights to create a fresh, light feel to any area. Lightweight powder coated aluminium roof lanterns use the latest silicone bonding techniques, as well as rapid fitting, with sizes up to 4m by 2m being available. The glazing is self clean with a low U value (1) and a 20 year non leak warranty. Tried and proved by Oakland Projects the skylights offer minimum joints and bars with a maximum glazed area.

With over 25 years’ practical experience, covering all market sectors, Oakland Projects has the benefit of a nationwide labour force. The company specialises in luxury construction, fit-outs, upgrades, extensions and refurbishment programmes with a realistic work schedule for all clients.

Oakland Projects recently launched its new website which showcases the company’s luxury building company’s impressive range of services, including bespoke shop fitting contracts. The new sports facility at Maldegem in Belgium is another example of how the Kalwall daylight diffusing system is being specified for many different kinds of applications across Europe. It is particularly popular in sports and leisure buildings, swimming pools and schools.

Designed by Van Acker & Partners in collaboration with Arcadis, as the result of a limited competition, this is a remarkable building of perfect synergy and sustainability where modern building technology is used to create the ideal playing conditions.

The building’s north south orientation was specifically designed to exploit in full the use of renewable energy such as solar and daylighting. To combat glare in the 48 x 34m main sports hall, Kalwall was chosen because of its unique light transmission as well as its high levels of impact resistance, good insulation and low maintenance.  Consequently, say the users, the sports hall generates a very happy and pleasant atmosphere.

The Kalwall translucent cladding not only diffuses natural daylight deep into the sports hall, which can be divided into three playing areas, but creates perfect playing conditions by eliminating glare and shadows. The even distribution of light allows players to distinguish markings on the floor as well as to easily spot balls and shuttlecocks.

This solution also means that there is no need for blinds, curtains or external shading. With increased natural daylight and resistance to solar gain, energy-consuming artificial lighting and air-conditioning costs are dramatically reduced.

Technically, the translucent panels are highly insulating, with U-values as low as 0.56W/m2K or further increasing to 0.28W/m2K when an aerogel is added within the panels.

Kalwall is distributed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland by Structura UK, a leading supplier, fabricator and installer of glass curtain walling, rainscreens, glass atria, windows and other architectural glass building products.

The company has recently had all three of its ISO certifications successfully renewed for three years: OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Management, ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification and ISO 9001 Quality Management certification.

Apart from being specified for all types of new build, Kalwall is increasingly used for the refurbishment of cladding or rooflights on aged buildings. Case studies and technical information are available from Structura UK Ltd, Tel: 01233 501 504 or visit www.structura-uk.com/kalwall.

Refurbishing the roof of Loxley House, the central hub of Nottingham City Council, caused no disruption to essential public services, thanks to Sika Liquid Plastics’ new low odour cold applied liquid roof membrane, Decothane Ultra.

The roof of Loxley House, located in Nottingham’s busy city centre, has large amount of detailing and upstands, and due to its age was prone to leaks. After a number of water ingress problems it was decided that the roof required a new waterproof coating, which could be applied around plant and detailing and would protect the building for years to come. A liquid applied solution ticked all of these boxes.

The project began in 2014, expertly undertaken by Derby-based Midland Roofing Services through the East Midlands Property Alliance (EMPA) Framework contractor, Robert Woodhead Ltd. The City Council required work to be carried out while the building was in use, due to the important nature of its work and the vital services it provides, required daily by the public.

LH 3_sm

The main challenge arose when the project kicked-off, as the waterproof coating for the roof needed to be applied around the air handling units for the building. As the offices below were in constant use, it was essential that any potential smells were minimised as any odour from roofing products used during installation that may have entered the building would have caused inconvenience and disruption.

Luckily it was at this time that Sika Liquid Plastics was bringing Decothane Ultra to the market, a new low odour liquid applied roof membrane. During development, Sika Liquid Plastics worked closely with Odournet, a team of independent consultants that deliver top level expertise on sensory analysis techniques and their application for product optimisation and material testing. According to test data, Decothane Ultra was scientifically proven to be much lower odour when benchmarked against other single pack polyurethanes available in the market. It achieves more than 80 percent reduction in odour strength five minutes after application and greater than 95 percent reduction after just one hour against a similar one-component competitor.

To add to this, the Decothane family of products are cold applied, eliminating the risk of fire in an occupied building during installation and cure to form a completely seamless waterproof membrane. These benefits over traditional roofing systems have enabled liquid waterproofing to become the fastest growing sector of the flat roofing market.

Midland Roofing chose to use Decothane Ultra with fantastic results. The impact of the work on the staff and visitors was greatly reduced with the building remaining fully functional. This was achieved by use of the low odour product, good management and communications between site agent and FM team, and effective management of the air intakes.

LH 1_sm

Over 3,000sq m of Decothane Ultra will have been applied to the roof by the completion of the project, which is split by various plant and access areas. These sections presented their own unique challenges, with some low plant presenting a clearance of only 10mm. The choice of a premium liquid applied product proved instrumental for these more awkward roof elements.

Jason Crich from Midland Roofing Services said: “Even for the most difficult parts of the refurbishment, Decothane Ultra allowed us to negotiate tricky plant areas with ease and achieve a skilful and flawless application.

“With its low odour levels and ease of application, Decothane Ultra will no doubt be the first choice for a growing number of refurbishment projects in sensitive areas and for highly populated buildings. The client has been really impressed with the quality of the work undertaken by our team and the effectiveness of the low odour solution that was specified for the job.”

Decothane Ultra utilises a range of new novel curing agents developed and patented by Sika. This new chemistry offers a versatile platform from which to formulate extremely low solvent content and to low odour liquid applied membranes for a wide range of applications.

Decothane Ultra is available in the UK from Sika Liquid Plastics. For further information visit www.liquidplastics.co.uk or call the Enquiry Line on 01772 259781

This means that developers specifying any of these Marley Eternit roofing products will be able to achieve an additional three credits under BREEAM for the use of ‘very good’ responsibly sourced materials.  Housebuilders will also benefit, as responsible sourcing will be one of the materials criteria for the new BRE Home Quality Mark.

The improved concrete rating was achieved by focussing on the responsible sourcing of the raw materials and the supply chain.  Gavin White, product manager at Marley Eternit, explains: “Switching to more environmentally friendly and responsibly sourced constituent materials is a high priority for the business.  This focus has helped to achieve continuous improvement in our BES 6001 ratings, this year seeing concrete upgraded from ‘good’ to ‘very good’.”

As the first roofing manufacturer to achieve BES 6001 back in 2011, Marley Eternit has been at the forefront of responsible sourcing in the industry and is the only UK supplier of fibre cement slates and profile sheeting to have the accreditation.

Gavin White continues: “We have been campaigning for the greater consideration of responsible sourcing in the specification and construction process for many years.  Now we are seeing it playing an increasing role in materials selection for both new build and refurbishment projects.

“From a new build perspective, both BREEAM and the new BRE Home Quality Mark act as incentives for developers and housebuilders to use responsibly sourced materials.  In terms of social housing refurbishment, we are also starting to see many landlords and representative procurement groups asking for responsible sourcing certification to be considered as an approved supplier.  Using any one of our roof tiles, slates or profile sheeting products will provide a ‘very good’ BES 6001 accreditation to support public sector specifiers and suppliers with their tenders.”

BES 6001 certification is awarded to manufacturers that can demonstrate responsible sourcing throughout the whole lifecycle of a product.  Initial mining, extraction or formulation of the raw materials through to product design, manufacturing and processing, installation, use and re-use and recycling, until final replacement are all accounted for, as well as the environmental and social impacts of its procurement through all stages of the supply chain.

Cembrit’s versatile building board, Cembrit PB, which is ideally suited as a stable base for a range of internal and external applications is now available in flex formulation. Cembrit PB Flex has been specifically developed for use on curved walls, arches, vaulted ceilings and around beams and columns.

Cement-based Cembrit PB delivers impressive dimensional stability and water resistance, to minimise expansion and contraction as a result of heat, cold and moisture. Its low water absorbency makes Cembrit PB ideal for use as a tile backer board for any internal wet area application where ceramic tiles will be used as the decorative finish, as well as externally for applications such as rendering, brick slips or stone cladding. With the newly-launched Cembrit PB Flex, it is now possible to render onto curved surfaces, including columns, spiral staircases and archways.

“We are confident that Cembrit PB Flex will help to make the life of the installer easier,” comments Cembrit Marketing Manager, Ged Ferris. “For contractors working on rendering projects with curved surfaces, Flex is the ideal solution. Rather than requiring mechanical cutting, Cembrit PB Flex can be scored and snapped, making it incredibly user-friendly. We have a network of nationwide stockists ready to supply the product, which will ensure impressive and convenient lead times.”

Compared to standard Cembrit PB, Flex offers reduced dimensions of width and weight per panel.  All Cembrit PB boards contain polystyrene beading, which makes them remarkably lightweight in comparison with stone, block and concrete. Strengthened with nylon mesh, the boards also boast an especially reinforced, tapered edge to allow an invisible fixing within 10mm of the board’s edge. The configuration of PB Flex maximizes stability at the butt joints and forms a tough structure to ensure a long-lasting result over the lifetime of the installation. Cembrit PB Flex can be curved to 90° with a minimum radius of 150mm.

Cembrit’s PB boards are tried and tested in all climates across North America and Europe and are supported by both British Standard and North American performance tests. Highly resistant, Cembrit PB impedes both fungus and mould to sustain a healthy, durable environment.

Using skills built up over 80 years, Cembrit offers a wide range of fibre cement and natural slates, as well as corrugated sheets, cladding and building board panels. Our factories operate Environmental Management Systems (EMS) to EN14001. Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) are available on all Cembrit manufactured ranges and Cembrit fibre cement slates are listed on the Greenbooklive.com register of environmental products. Quality levels at group factories are rigorously maintained to high standards, with many products manufactured under the control of ISO 9001 and British Board of Agrément. Cembrit UK is a member of Cembrit Holding A/S of Denmark.

NVELOPE, the rainscreen cladding specialist has supplied its NV1 system to a recently built BREEAM Excellent rated office in Aberdeen. The vertical cladding support system has been applied to the five storey bespoke building, supporting approximately 3000 square metres of granite cladding.

The 40,000 sq ft office space is part of the regeneration of the North Dee Business Quarter and is now home to North Sea operating company, GDF Suez E&P UK ltd.  The company was split across three sites in Aberdeen, Union Plaza, Holburn House and City Wharf, but the new space consolidates all the teams in one location.  The new office is the first building in Aberdeen to achieve BREEAM excellent rating under the 2011 regeneration scheme. BREEAM is an environmental assessment method which sets the standard for best practice in sustainable building design construction and operation. BREEAM encourages designers and architects to think about low carbon and low impact design. GLASSOLUTIONS, the UK’s leading provider of glass and glazing solutions specified NVELOPE’s NV1 system as past experience proved that the product beats its competitors on quality and price.

“The main advantage of working with NVELOPE was the technical support, the product itself and the cost effective price.” says Derek Morgan, of GLASSOLUTIONS. “We have worked with NVELOPE on previous projects and not only do the systems look great, but you get extremely good value for money. The cladding support system was used on the main elevation of the office building and the brackets were installed quickly and easily without any complications. We will definitely be using the NV1 system again on future projects.”

NVELOPE’s NV1 flexible point brackets were well suited for this project as they allow for expansion and contraction of the cladding when under strain from various weather conditions including strong winds. The NV ranges provides a secure fixing solution for façade materials including high pressure laminate (HPL), timber, weatherboard, fibre cement, fibre concrete, ceramic, thin stone, aluminium composite material (ACM) and many other metals. They are available pre-assembled with thermal isolators to help reduce thermal bridging and also prevent a chemical reaction which could occur between the aluminium bracket and the line in a concrete frame.  Stand off sizes for the vertical range are from 40 – 300 mm.

NVELOPE holds extensive stock to ensure orders can always be met and where necessary, immediate delivery can be provided.   All NVELOPE cladding systems can be engineered to project specific requirements thanks to the expertise of its technical design support service. This provides architects and specifiers freedom with an almost infinite range of façade appearance and layout options.

Manufactured in the UK and developed using the highest specification alloys, NVELOPE products and systems are ideal for supporting a wide variety of façade materials.

The vast majority of stations and railway buildings were built during the Victorian era most noted for architectural excellence and engineering innovation.

Stations particularly were the “face” of the railways and great design and build care was exercised with the result that many

of these are among the greatest public buildings ever created. Even small stations had character and visual appeal.

The “designed in” longevity of these creations is evident even today when many structures can be refurbished with relative ease using modern materials where appropriate, usually the roof; and traditional restoration techniques when required by listed building status.

The result is always a building restored to an “as new” condition but with improvements to serve the needs of today and the future. It is most often a testament to the huge skills and ability of the originators coupled with modern materials, techniques and expertise.

During these refurbishments, the gutters, which can be manufactured from a variety of materials but most likely from Cast Iron or Lead lined timber on older buildings and prefabricated steel and aluminium on more modern buildings, will most likely need to be either renewed or lined.

Sometimes it is possible to renew or replace existing gutters providing there is access to one or both sides of the gutter to permit removal , for example if the roof is being replaced, but is often totally impractical in any other circumstances.

Quite often the gutters are part of a listed structure and must be retained.

This provides a restoration problem, particularly if the gutters are already leaking. The long term repair of existing, leaking gutter joints can be very difficult and most repairs consist of bandage and bitumen applications or other coating systems, neither of which will work long term as the existing gutters cannot be cleaned sufficiently to allow correct bonding and leaking joints can often “move” beyond the capabilities of the repair materials used.

A practical and long term solution is to line the existing gutters and Unifold™, which is a metal and membrane lining system, offers exceptional life expectancy in excess of 50 years and very often better than the original gutter.

Any lining, such as Unifold™, should be an engineered solution to closely follow the profile of the existing gutter cavity. The existing installation and its serving components must be surveyed correctly, preferably by the manufacturer, to ensure that the resulting design solution is carefully considered for capacity and drainage capability, calculated to current standards and any thermal movement of the existing installation is balanced by the lining system using expansion joints where necessary.

Unifold™ has been used on many occasions to line gutters on Railway buildings such as Norwich Crown Point Rail, Chester Station and Southend Station to name but a few, however, most notably

Lime Street Station, Liverpool received a Unifold installation to all its gutters as part of the last major refurbishment some 11 years ago.

THE ROOF AT LIME STREET STATION

Gutter lining systems should not always be considered inferior or secondary to new gutters, in reality they may be considered to be far superior providing the system can demonstrate all or most of the following:

  1. Full survey and design service with calculations to current standards provided by the system manufacturer.
  2. Effective replication of the existing gutter
  3. Provision of expansion/contraction facilities and the ability, when required, to induce movement in the lining system to correspond with the existing installation.
  4. Ability to enlarge outlets or to introduce additional outlets with relative ease.
  5. The ability to be easily repaired throughout its lifespan
  6. And finally the system should be well engineered from design and manufacture through to installation and have a proven, long and trouble free lifespan to enable the provision of an effective guarantee that not only includes materials and manufacture but installation as well.

Prestigious house builder Shanly Homes has used Freefoam fascia on a new development at Helios Court, Maidenhead. The exclusive apartment block features a double fascia dormer detail using Freefoam roofline products to create an attractive stepped effect beneath the flat dormer roof. With developers looking for more sophisticated and original features Freefoam products offer the flexibility and opportunity to create bespoke installations without compromising on functionality or aesthetics.

Developed in conjunction with supplier Willmotts of Reading and site staff the styling is perfect for the west aspect of this corner site. George Petts, Sales and Technical Manager, Willmotts explained “As suppliers we work closely with house builders to help them achieve the best possible look and finish for their developments.  I originally worked with Shanly’s Principal Carpenter and Technical Manager to develop this style of dormer, which has since become their standard format for Flat Roof Dormers. Having supplied Freefoam products for many years we know the range inside out, and use our technical knowledge and experience to generate bespoke detailing for our clients”

Freefoam 150mm Full Replacement Square Leg Fascia Board is supplied for both levels and cut on-site to 100mm for the Lower Section.  General Purpose Board is used for one level and Vented General Purpose Board for the other level, to provide ventilation. Each dormer is also constructed to slope slightly from front to back, where rainwater discharges into a secret gutter and then on to the Main Roof. This avoids fitting rainwater to the dormers themselves, so creating a much cleaner looking installation.

Freefoam manufacture the complete roofline solution, fascia and soffit in a wide range of widths and depths for a variety of applications all guaranteed for up to 50 years.

Colin St John, General Manager summarised “This development is another illustration of the suitability and flexibility of Freefoam products for house builders, allowing them to create individual detailing and bespoke  features, to provide high specification properties for todays discerning homeowner.”

The cladding support systems have been installed throughout the £40 million refurbishment of the school, to support approximately 6000 square metres of timber and cedar cladding.

Crest Girls’ Academy is at the heart of the community and single sex education is offered to girls up to the age of 16. The school required modernisation to new and existing buildings. Two sports halls, large classrooms and activity studios are just a few of the improvements which have been made to the Academy. The refurbishment has provided excellent outdoor areas for both play and leisure, and resources such as the library and theatre are available for not only the pupils but the local community too. The architect, Capita Symonds was regularly on site for design meetings and they specified the NVELOPE horizontal and vertical cladding support systems. The system was installed by sub-contractor Horohoe construction, who worked closely with the architect.

“The NV1 and NV6 system is ear to install” says James Black, Surveyor from Horohoe Construction. “We used the NVELOPE project checklist on this project, which sped up the cladding specification process by providing a detailed design for us. It took about four weeks to fit the brackets. We have worked with NVELOPE in the past and we are currently using the systems on other on-going projects.”

NVELOPE’s NV1 vertical flexible point brackets and NV6 horizontal system were well suited for this project as they allow for expansion and contraction of the cladding when under strain from various weather conditions including strong winds.  The NVELOPE provides a secure fixing solution for façade materials including high pressure laminate (HPL), timber, weatherboard, fibre cement, fibre concrete, ceramic, thin stone, aluminium composite material (ACM) and many other metals. Laying down a significant marker for their trade, roofing specialists in traditional hard metals (copper, stainless steel and zinc) now have their own Traditional / Heritage Roofing CSCS card.

Launched on the 1st June 2013, the Traditional / Heritage Roofing – Hard Metals CSCS card will identify those craftsmen experienced in traditional metal roofing design and installation.

Following in the footsteps of a similar card created to identify experienced specialist leadworkers, the Traditional / Heritage hard metals card will have a Managed Industry Accreditation (“Grandfather Rights”) period of twelve months, during which any suitably experienced metal roofing contractor can apply to be issued with the card. At the end of twelve months (i.e. 31st May 2014) this route will be closed and then applicants will need an NVQ3 in heritage metal roofing or have to undergo a practical / theory assessment process in order to get their card.

image001

Although whilst available the Managed Industry Accreditation route will be a cheaper and more convenient process in getting the card, they will not just be simply given away to every applicant.

The purpose of the card is to identify roofing contractors experienced in traditional / heritage metal roofing and separate them from the many other contractors involved in the industry that have neither the experience nor the appropriate skills in this specialist sector.

This will in turn enable clients and specifiers to regard the Traditional / Heritage Roofing cardholders as having the skills and experience they require when looking to deliver a traditional building project.

All applicants will therefore be required to provide information on their background and experience, supported by photographs of their work and referees, which will be processed through the Federation of Traditional Metal Roofing Contractors who are working in partnership with CSCS in this initiative. FTMRC see this development as a significant next step in their efforts to raise quality standards in the metal roofing sector.

Applications made direct to CSCS will simply be referred back to the FTMRC, in an effort to ensure that only those contractors with the appropriate skills and competence are issued with the card.

Applicants will need to have passed the CITB Health & Safety (Working at Heights) test within the last two years to have their application approved. Further details and application forms are available from the FTMRC (info@ftmrc.co.uk) telephone 01342 301627.

Significant client endorsement for the leadworkers card has recently come in the form of the announcement from English Heritage that the upcoming Audley End project will include a specification that only holders of the Heritage Skills Specialist Leadworker card will be considered for the substantial lead installation work required and it is hoped the hard metals card will quickly receive the same level of status and credibility among the major heritage and traditional roofing client groups.
