Axis AX fire integration panel allows retrofit with older systems

The high level of integrity and diagnostic tools on its systems have helped an Advanced systems integrator save a client school £14,000 on a retrofit installation.

Alarm Electronics & Communications was contracted by the Flagstaff Unified School District in Arizona to update the fire detection system at Coconino High School, which opened in 1967. Having experienced two massive remodels and several lightning strikes over the years, school officials noticed during the latest remodel that the fire systems were unstable, with obsolete parts that made repairs difficult.

The job posed several unique challenges as the current system was a non-addressable 30 zone hardwired system, with some elements almost 30 years old.

“To keep track of wire length impedances and device current draws, we couldn’t just go out and replace each device, connect it to a panel and auto-program,” said Alarm Electronics & Communications owner, Marc Forman. “Most fire panels have limitations based on the age, type and length of wire. This campus had over 60,000 feet of traditional building wire, and besides the high cost of a complete tear-out and reinstall, we also had to keep the fire system partially running during installation because classes were in summer session.”

To address these issues, the company used Axis AX intelligent fire panels from Advanced. The panel has four fully filtered, voltage regulated SLC addressable circuits that would accommodate the old wiring types and methods, as well as the sheer length of wire in the school’s current system.

Using the Axis AX panel, Alarm Electronics & Communications could engineer and commission the upgrade on the go. After some modifications to the 25 year-old duct smoke detectors, new equipment was retrofitted to the current hardwired system. This saved the school district approximately £14,000 ($20,000) over a new installation.

In addition to its ability to work with older fire systems, Axis AX also provided school officials with enhanced functionality and visibility over the older model fire system. The panel’s diagnostics and function buttons allow complete system interrogation and control.

If a problem in the system occurs, the panel can indicate the location so a technician can quickly address the issue and get the system back online.

“The Axis AX panel is one of the most – if not the most – powerful platforms for fire integration available, with outstanding diagnostics and features needed today,” added Marc.

The Monument Building in the heart of the City of London is one of the current projects to use Bull Products latest Cygnus wireless alarm system during construction works.

Standing adjacent to The Monument, which marks the origin of the Great Fire of London, the new project being built by leading construction group Skanska, is a building which will comprise 94,000sqft, offering 88,000sqft of office accommodation with 4,000sqft of retail space.

Designed by architect Ken Shuttleworth’s Make, the office accommodation is split over 10 floors with terraces at several levels.  The Monument Building is designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and is scheduled for completion in Spring 2016.

Skanska has been using the Bull Products system since construction started last year.  The construction group recognised the benefits of the Cygnus wireless alarm system and specified some 26 units for installation across all 10 floors of the building project.  The Cygnus alarm system can link as many as 480 alarm and detector units in different zones on a construction site, and individual units can be fire alarm call points, first aid alerts, combined call points and first aid alerts, smoke detectors or heat detectors.

Claire McCormack, Health & Safety Manager at Skanska has been delighted with the performance of the system: “We found Cygnus to be a very good system, providing not just alarms but first aid points as well.  If an operator, say on level seven, hits the first aid button then we know exactly where to send help.  Also, if for instance a crane driver is unwell, then that person too can hit an emergency button to raise the alarm.”

Claire is also impressed with the flexible service that Bull Products provides, commenting: “As the whole system is reusable on future construction projects, it is a very sound investment and financially much better than hiring.  Also by purchasing the Cygnus system, Bull Products hold the units in stock on our behalf for us to call off when we require, and they also maintain the system for us”.

Intended purely for use on construction sites, the CE marked Cygnus system has been specifically designed for use in dense concrete and steel structured buildings and areas where there are many other radio frequencies in operation, and so particular attention has been given to achieving an impressive connection range.  Where there are multiple sites within range of each other, the Cygnus system has been designed to operate on different site addresses in order to keep each system separate and free from interference.

A major feature of the Cygnus system is the optional control panel which provides a very sophisticated capability with an event log function which records any events such as an alarm activation, low battery warning, and signal faults, all of which can be viewed if necessary in the history folder held on the panel.  The system also has the ability to test all units and has an evacuate function which will act as a call point to the rest of the alarm units.

Each unit in the system can provide the panel with information at regular intervals.  This explicit information confirms the unit is still present and what the battery status of each device is.  Known as the ‘heart beat’ this message is monitored by the control panel where fitted and if the ‘heart beat’ is not heard for several intervals, the control panel logs a full status for that unit.

A PIR option is now available on any of the modules which can detect an intruder and alert off-site personnel for added safety protection.

Bull Products offers a full one-year guarantee on all Cygnus devices and provides high levels of technical, on-site and after-sales service support in addition to its standard maintenance contracts.

Further information on the Cygnus wireless alarm system is available from Bull Products on 0844 669 1111, by emailing info@bullproducts.co.uk or by visiting the company’s website at www.bullproducts.co.uk

Fire safety solutions

Hochiki Europe offers two types of fire detection system; the ESP intelligent analogue addressable fire alarm system and the CDX conventional system, as well as a range of ancillary and test equipment.

The Enhanced System Protocol (ESP) is Hochiki Europe’s high integrity communications link to all products in the range, and incorporates a variety of high performance sensors, modules and ancillary devices to increase ease of routine maintenance and commissioning.

The CDX range covers one of the most extensive product portfolios, and provides solutions for most conventional fire detection applications, as well as security systems due to its wide voltage range (9.5 ~30 V dc).

Installing a Hochiki Europe fire safety system ensures an open protocol, delivering choice and flexibility, reduced cost of ownership, virtual elimination of false alarms and compliance to all required industry standards.

Emergency Lighting solutions

Hochiki Europe is also a recognised force in the emergency lighting sector for its FIREscape emergency lighting system. FIREscape is a unique, highly cost effective and environmentally friendly emergency lighting system that incorporates the latest in LED and battery technologies. Designed, manufactured and tested in the UK, the system is based around an emergency lighting control panel with battery back-up and features addressable, self-contained luminaires and signage interconnected via traditional extra low-voltage cabling.

FIREscape is simple to install, requires little maintenance or manual testing, and uses less than 5% energy consumption compared with conventional lighting. Even at its peak lumen output, the LED draws only 80% of the recommended maximum energy level which minimises energy consumption and maximises LED lifespan whilst still conforming to BS 5266. Further information can be found at www.hochikieurope.com/firescape

Renowned for its innovation Aico is pleased to announce the launch of AudioLINK™, a revolutionary new data extraction technology integrated into all of its Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms.

AudioLINK allows for invaluable real time data to be extracted via the Alarm’s sounder – all you need is an AudioLINK enabled CO Alarm, a tablet or smartphone and most importantly the free AudioLINK App. This data is converted into an Alarm Status Report, which is simple to review and store.

The Report is created for the life of the Alarm, and is colour coded to identify the urgency of any issue. The Report displays useful information about the Alarm, such as battery life, alarm sensor status, number of times tested and removed; and detection levels of CO, including background CO, with details of when it occurred – all in a simple format. As the information is generated in real time, should there be an issue then it can be dealt with there and then.

Additional information about each section can be obtained simply by tapping onto the desired area on the tablet or smartphone – this will then provide more detailed guidance to the user. The Report can accommodate additional information such as a site reference number, address or location before being forwarded via email or to be stored in a key location for future reference.

Data is stored for the life of the Alarm and can be extracted as many times as required, enabling historic information to be retained. As such, AudioLINK is proving extremely popular with social landlords as it improves the level of protection their tenants will receive whilst being more time, budget and resource efficient. The Reports provide physical records of CO levels in the properties they manage.  It can be used as part of the property checks prior to changing over to new tenants, contributes towards the annual Gas Safety Checks (CP12) and generates real time information should CO leaks be detected or the safety of a fuel burning appliance reported.

Landlords in the private sector are also expected to welcome this new technology following the recent announcement of changes to legislation which will require private sector landlords to install working Smoke and CO Alarms in their properties in England.  AudioLINK provides a quick and simple way to test the CO Alarm prior to tenants moving in.

AudioLINK has been installed as standard into Aico’s Ei208 Lithium battery powered CO Alarm range and Ei261 and Ei262 mains powered CO Alarms.  The Alarms all feature a proven CO sensor which is pre-calibrated and tested in real CO gas to ensure accuracy and attains the British Standard for CO detection in residential dwellings – BS EN 50291-1:2010 or BS EN 50291-2:2010.  To clearly identify the new AudioLINK featured Alarms, alarm units will carry a readily identifiable AudioLINK symbol.

Aico and Ei Electronics have worked with local authorities and housing association across the UK to develop AudioLINK and believe that this innovation will benefit both tenants and housing providers. With this in mind the price of Aico’s CO Alarms will stay the same and the AudioLINK App will be free to ensure everyone gets the protection they deserve.

Also, if that wasn’t enough all Aico CO Alarms now come with a 10 Year Life proving the best value protection.

A wholly owned subsidiary of Ei Electronics, Aico is a market leader in residential fire and CO protection in the UK. All Alarms are designed and built in Ireland specifically to meet the UK standards and regulations. 2015 sees Aico’s 25th anniversary. With more mains powered domestic Smoke Alarms installed in the UK’s social housing than any other manufacturer, Aico is tried, tested and trusted. Aico has a dedicated team of Regional Managers to support specifications and supply of products. Aico also offers technical support over the phone and an internal sales team to help with any enquiries.

IronmongeryDirect, the UK’s largest online and mail order supplier of ironmongery products to the trade, has launched a new fire door safety checklist to equip trade professionals with all the knowledge they need to ensure a fire door remains in excellent working order.

The detailed checklist informs tradespeople on everything they need to consider when they have been tasked with installing or maintaining a fire door. From intumescent seals to hinges, locks, latches and door closers, the handy guide covers all of the essential components that are required to make a fire door fully operational and therefore compliant and legal.

With too many fire doors still being propped open illegally using unsafe equipment, the guide also focuses on the importance of installing and maintaining safe fire door holders, such as those in the Dorgard range, which are accepted for use by fire authorities.

By asking a series of questions, the easy to use checklist helps tradesmen to understand what they should check for to guarantee the door and its accompanying hardware will work properly.

The simple and easy-to-use checklist aims to make installing and maintaining fire doors more straightforward, and can be used as a quick reference guide when tradesmen are working on a property.

Martin Smith, product manager at IronmongeryDirect, said: ‘Over 3 million new fire doors are bought and installed every year to protect against fires and ultimately save lives. However not all are installed or maintained properly.”

IronmongeryDirect is continually developing ways to support its customers which is why we have created this checklist to ensure trade professionals know exactly what that need to look for to ensure a fire door works correctly in the event of a fire. From choosing the best hardware components right through to ongoing aftercare, all aspects need to be given considerable thought.

Failure to comply with the rules and regulations highlighted by the checklist not only puts people’s lives at risk, but can lead to prosecution and fines for the people responsible for the installation or maintenance of a fire door, so it’s important to get it right.

With so many factors to bear in mind, this tool has been designed to help make their job much easier.”

Siemens has introduced two new compact keypads for the SPC intruder detection system.  They use touchkeys instead of traditional mechanical keys and the key interface illuminates only when touched.  With a depth of just 17.5mm, these keypads sit unobtrusively on any wall. Model SPCK520 offers display and speech output and model SPCK521 adds an ID card reader.

The new keypads support EM and MIFARE card technologies. Advanced user authentication eliminates the inconvenience of repeated PIN code entry on systems that are armed and disarmed many times daily. Users can download prerecorded or customized audio files to the keypads. These audible messages assist users when various system events occur.

The large graphical display provides a wealth of information at a glance. For instance, users can access detailed information about doors that are open or ajar and therefore preventing the system from being armed. The keypads supply system information and offer various ways to configure the parameters of the SPC system on-site – without additional tools such as a PC.

An optional plug-in RF module allows the keypads to be used as RF receivers for communication with wireless detectors nearby. This eliminates the need for separate RF receivers. In addition, the keypads have push-wire terminals so that installers can secure the wires of connection cables with a single push action. For flush mounting, Siemens offers a special frame that allows the keypad to be installed flush with the wall. An optional metal enclosure is available for installation in concrete walls.

The compact keypads are backward-compatible with existing SPC systems. Users can choose from the eight languages that are supplied as standard, with additional language packs available for download.

The SPC intruder detection series offered by the Siemens business segment Security Products combines sophisticated protection against intruders with a cost-effective modular design and installation concept. SPC systems are scalable up to 512 zones, with 120 wireless zones.

Lux Intelligent makes emergency light testing and management so easy you can do it from your phone.

Global fire systems business Advanced has launched Lux Intelligent, a new emergency lighting testing system with cloud monitoring and mobile management. It offers time and cost savings, a host of unique technical features and proves compliance with BS5266-1.

Lux Intelligent is an addressable, automatic test system that shows all emergency lighting is compliant and functioning, with no engineer intervention required, saving money and time. It can be easily networked and retrofitted onto existing wiring and luminaires, keeping installation costs to a minimum.

A unique feature of Lux Intelligent is cloud monitoring and system management via mobile and web apps. Test data is stored securely in the cloud and the system delivers live details on status, faults, test failures and advisories from a smartphone or via a web browser, allowing users to monitor all their sites, anywhere in the world, right down to individual devices. Users can share the sites or panels with engineers and maintenance staff and e-mail maintenance and test reports in one click.

The system is easily installed in one panel or networked formats. Networks can be standard cable, allowing 200 panels to be networked, or customers can use their own LAN and wireless networks. This low cost, no disruption method allows an unlimited number of panels to be networked to cover large or multiple sites right across the globe and monitored via the cloud.

Lux Intelligent works with almost any light, including LEDs, from almost any manufacturer and can be easily added to existing wiring, offering considerable savings on installation and maintenance costs. It works with any existing system including central battery, and each panel has up to four loops each supporting 249 luminaires.

The system has a unique set of test methods that include the standard current and voltage tests, but also direct light level measurement via fibre optics. Once installed, the panels should never need to be looked at, apart from a three year battery check; in fact, their reliability is so high that Advanced has removed the key from the panel front.

“It’s probably fair to say that no other emergency lighting testing system makes compliance with BS5266-1 easier or more cost effective,” comments Advanced’s marketing manager Aston Bowles. “In fact, we’re so confident that Lux Intelligent will save users time and money that we provide a savings calculator on our website, showing how the automatic testing technology, easy installation and cloud monitoring add up to impressive savings and benefits within a very short time.”

“I don’t believe there’s another system out there that can match Lux Intelligent for performance and ease-of-use,” adds Dave Henderson, the company’s emergency lighting product manager. “A well-tested, compliant system that works when you need it is the goal. We achieve this in a few simple steps. Firstly, we offer live status and test reporting; secondly, we store all of your data securely in three places: the panel, the PC and the cloud; thirdly, we give you access to that data on your phone, tablet or any computer and, finally, we make it simple to share sites, panels or test and maintenance reports with your team or 3rd party partners quickly and easily.

“It’s this combination of zero time testing, data integrity and quick resolution of problems and maintenance needs that make Lux Intelligent so reliable and cost effective. Add to this the fact your system can easily scale to cover any site anywhere and work with just about any light or LED fitting, and you’ve got a system that’s unbeatable and future-proofed, saving on expensive one-off investment in the future,” concluded Dave.

Advanced is a world leader in the development and manufacture of intelligent fire systems and emergency lighting testing. The legendary performance, quality and ease-of-use of its products sees them used in prestigious and challenging locations all over the world, from single-panel installations to large multi-site networks. Advanced products include complete fire detection systems, multi-protocol fire panels, extinguishing control, fire paging systems and emergency lighting testing.

As part of its 25th anniversary celebrations Aico, a market leader in domestic Fire and Carbon Monoxide (CO) protection products, has launched a new sophisticated training and demonstration facility at its premises in Oswestry, Shropshire: the Centre of Excellence. A standalone building comprising of 4326 ft² (402 m²) over two storeys, the Centre of Excellence has been built by Aico to demonstrate its comprehensive product range and provide customers with the latest training and meeting facilities.

On the ground floor of the Centre of Excellence Aico has created ‘Ember Place’, which emulates a furnished home, with typical room layouts including a lounge, kitchen and bedroom.  Aico alarms and accessories are fitted within these rooms to clearly demonstrate which products are suitable for these settings.  And, just to add a bit of extra character, each room has been designed and furnished from a specific decade from the 1960s to the present – flying ducks on the wall and all!

These rooms use infographics to explain the potential fire and CO risks in a property and details the products suitable to install to protect residents.  Special Applications boards display how Aico products can be interlinked with third party systems such as Warden Call Systems and Gas Shut Off Valves.

A hands on training room is located next to ‘Ember Place’ where Aico will conduct specific training courses for customers, including its Aico Fire Products Trained Installer Scheme (AFPTIS) which has been designed for electrical contractors. The scheme has so far trained 9500 people over almost six years.

Running across the length of the first floor of Aico’s Centre of Excellence is a large modern meeting room which can accommodate up to 50 people and a break out area with seating and desks.  The meeting room has the latest presentation facilities including an automated projector, sophisticated LED lighting with a variety of settings and automated black out blinds.

The launch of the Centre of Excellence is the first event in 2015 to mark Aico’s 25th anniversary.  Visitors to The Centre are able to gain an overview of the history of Aico, along with its parent company Ei Electronics, through an infographic marking all the key stages in these companies’ histories, including actual products – past and present – from the 25 years Aico has been in business.

Bringing customers right up to date, visitors to the Centre can also get a taste of the current alarm manufacturing process through a series of video monitors showing the nine different stages of production at Ei’s plant in Shannon, Ireland.

The Centre of Excellence was officially launched on the 14th January at a major event attended by 154 people, including a host of key Aico customers from Local Authorities and Housing Associations, Electrical Contractors and Wholesalers, as well as national and local media.  Tours were conducted around the Centre following a ribbon cutting ceremony by Michael Guinee, Managing Director of Aico and parent company Ei Electronics.

Sanctuary Housing, one of the largest social housing providers in the country, has installed Aico’s 160RC series mains-powered RadioLINK alarm systems into all of the 96 flats in its latest £10.4 million development in Newlands Place, Cumbernauld. Sanctuary Housing manages homes across England and Scotland, providing general rented, sheltered and home ownership accommodation.

Sanctuary Cumbernauld, one of its regional operations in Scotland, is in the midst of a £70 million regeneration programme to remove the town’s 12 high rises and rehouse the tenants. The new development in Newlands Place, which features four blocks of 24 two-bedroom flats, will rehome 96 families in modern, comfortable homes.

As a key safety measure the development is being fitted with Aico’s 160RC series mains powered, rechargeable lithium battery back-up smoke alarms. David Robertson, Director at FLN Consulting Engineers, specified the alarms for this new development: “We have specified Aico on all our projects for a number of years having been impressed with the overall quality and reliability of the product.”

Each flat has its own stand-alone system. Additional alarms have been installed in the communal hallways, which are interlinked using Aico’s RadioLINK technology to those in the individual flats. An alarm activated in the communal area will cause the alarms in all flats to be activated for maximum safety. Alarms in flats, however, will not cause the communal alarms to activate, thus avoiding issues of alarms causing unnecessary disruption to other residents.

RadioLINK lets you interconnect Aico alarms and accessories together using Radio Frequency (RF) signals rather than cabling. New properties, such as the Newlands Place development, are seeing the benefits of wire free alarm interconnection as it provides far greater flexibility in alarm installation and adaptation.

Aico’s mains-powered 160RC series smoke and heat alarms are a popular choice for specifiers and social housing providers as they contain tamper proof rechargeable lithium back-up cells, which last the life of the alarm. These can provide over six months back-up in the event of a mains power failure and the batteries can’t be removed by tenants for use in other household devices.

A wholly-owned subsidiary of Ei Electronics, Aico is a market leader in residential fire protection in the UK. All alarms are designed and built in Europe specifically to meet the UK standards and regulations. For more information, please go to www.aico.co.uk.

The SigniFire Video Fire Detection (VFD) system from Fike Safety Technology (FST) has been deployed in the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) hangar to protect some of the nation’s most valuable historic assets. Based at RAF Coningsby, the aircraft of the BBMF are regularly seen at events commemorating World War II, British State occasions and at air displays around the UK and Europe.

Most notable amongst the WWII aircraft are the Spitfire, the Hurricane and one of only two flight-worthy Lancaster bombers in the world. It was therefore imperative that when the fire protection needs of the BBMF hangar were reviewed, a state-of-the-art solution was chosen to provide effective and reliable fire detection. The new system was designed and installed by T.I.S., an integrated solutions specialist and part of Fike’s nationwide Integrator Network.

The camera-based SigniFire VFD visually detects the presence of fire or smoke at its source. Multiple cameras were installed, covering both the floor of the hangar and the roof space. The technology offers many benefits including fast and reliable response, effective protection in demanding environments, excellent value for money and the bonus of providing CCTV images for security purposes, if required. The video can aid incident response and can be recorded for post-incident analysis.

Following a rigorous competitive tender, SigniFire was chosen for its advanced technology, resilient and redundant architecture and its field proven reliability. The testing phase at RAF Coningsby created an unusual problem, explains, Mark Wilson, Head of Contracts for T.I.S. “Due to the nature of the environment and the priceless value of the assets held in the hangar we were not allowed to light real test fires for the commissioning of the system, so we developed a unique artificial flame and smoke simulator. At the time of testing both the original fire detection system and the VFD were operational. These tests demonstrated SigniFire’s excellent fast response to the initial presence of both smoke and flame.”

Unlike conventional fire detection systems, SigniFire doesn’t use traditional forms of smoke, heat or flame detection. Instead, it works by automatically analysing video images at the point of detection in each video fire detector, looking for tell-tale characteristics that indicate the presence of smoke and/or flames. Distributing the video processing to within each fire detector camera delivers improved resilience and with the use of fire resistant cable allows the system to be BS 5839 certified. Video is recorded on a NVR and monitored remotely on a touchscreen SpyderPanel. SigniFire is also connected to a newly installed addressable fire alarm system in the building.

An aircraft hangar creates one of the most demanding environments for VFD, with day/night light changes, slow moving aircraft, bright sunlight and constantly opening hangar doors. The application of video exclusion zones and double-knock triggers on both flame and smoke detection ensures false alarms are minimised and that the BBMF hangar has reliable and effective protection around the clock. In addition LED white lighting was installed next to each camera to ensure minimum illumination at all times.

UNION’s panic bolt was put head to head against a Briton equivalent and has proven to be the champion of quick and simple installation. UNION’s Eximo® 801 Panic Bolt was pit against the competitor product with the installation process being timed in a controlled environment, on identical doors, and fitted by the same installer, to see which product proved to be the easiest to install.

The UNION Eximo device installation took 34 minutes with the competitor product taking 66 minutes, revealing the time and effort that installers can save by using the Eximo® range.

The Eximo® range is designed to be easy to install, use and adjust. With all Eximo® products also being fully retro-fittable with the market’s popular products – the range is a great advantage when working on refurbishment projects.

Ian Barlett, Head of Product Management at ASSA ABLOY, said: “The Eximo® range has a number of features and benefits that help installers to save time. For instance any fine-tuning to adjust the unit can be done centrally, rather than at the top of the door, making the assembly quick and simple, so installers can move on to their next jobs quicker.

“UNION’s Eximo® device took almost half the time of the competitor product to install, so two 801 Panic Bolts could be fitted in the same time it would take to fit one competitor product!”

All products within the Eximo® panic exit range are suitable for use on exit doors within public buildings where in a crisis, the exit route is unfamiliar, in accordance to BS EN 1125, making them ideal for applications such as hospitals, schools and leisure facilities.

Conversely, the products available under the emergency exit range are designed for use in buildings, where users are familiar with the exit routes and procedures in accordance to BS EN 179 – making them a crucial feature in offices and commercial developments.

UNION’s Eximo® range is guaranteed for ten years, Certifre approved and CE marked.

PEL Services Ltd., one of the UK’s foremost providers of commercial sound, fire, security and audio visual systems, has completed the installation of fire alarm, intruder alarm, CCTV and access control systems at The Third Space’s Soho health club. A cutting edge pacesetter, The Third Space is dedicated to delivering a new form of “healthy hedonism”, adopting an integrated approach by bringing together the best experts and facilities to cater for all requirements in exercise, health, medicine, nutrition, and fun.

The Soho club – one of two in London – opened in 2001 and is currently undergoing extensive refurbishment work.  Phase one, creating a new reception and relocating the Medical Centre and main studio to the first floor, has been completed, with further work scheduled over the coming year.

As part of the building and refurbishment project, PEL Services has undertaken extensive work to design, install and commission modern security and fire alarm systems to protect this considerable investment.

With the Club having an extensive range of state of the art equipment and facilities, including private medical and GP services, securing the premises and those within it, is vital.  PEL has installed a modern internal CCTV system throughout the premises featuring day / night cameras that automatically change from colour images to night vision when the light levels drop below a certain threshold.  In the swimming pool area the camera has been fitted with a very wide angle lens to ensure complete coverage of the area with just the one device.  In the new reception, the cameras have been integrated with a panic button facility for added security and reassurance.  The entire CCTV system is recorded 24 hours a day.

A networked electronic proximity access control system has been fitted by PEL to the newly relocated Medical Centre.  The system allows for authorised staff to come and go freely but prevents others from entering without permission.  PEL has designed the system to be easily expandable (up to 200 doors), so it can be extended to cover other areas of the Club as and when the remaining phases of the refurbishment are completed.

In addition, PEL Services has upgraded the intruder alarm system.

The existing fire alarm system at the Club was a closed protocol system, widely considered to be restrictive.  In line with general industry leaning, PEL replaced the entire system with a modern open protocol addressable system that is more flexible and accommodates a wider choice of equipment, including specialist devices and control panels.

PEL Services operates throughout the UK and overseas, supporting markets as diverse as local authorities, public utilities, finance, healthcare, education and retail.  For sales information please contact PEL Services Ltd on 0333 123 2100 or go to www.pel.co.uk

The Derby Arena has been fitted with nine Fire Fighting Enterprises (FFE) Fireray 5000 advanced infra-red beam smoke detectors as part of its fire protection system. The arena is a new multi-sports complex currently under construction by Derby City Council and scheduled for completion in early 2015. “Optical beam smoke detectors provide wide area detection and are used when it is impractical, inappropriate or not cost effective to use traditional point-type detectors,” comments FFE’s Technical Director Jon Ben. “They are ideally suited to large arenas with high ceilings, such as the Derby Arena, as they enable coverage of a large area at minimal cost.

“The Fireray 5000 in particular excels at detecting smoke over large areas in wide indoor spaces: the infra-red beam of a single detector spans up to 100m.  With automatic motorised alignment and a low level controller for easy commissioning and maintenance, the Fireray 5000 makes smoke detection in large spaces much easier and more effective than it might be with using other technologies,” added Jon.

The £27.5 million Derby Arena will contain Britain’s fifth 250-metre indoor cycle track and the fourth in the UK capable of holding international standard track racing. The track will be raised to allow access to an indoor sports hall the size of 12 badminton courts, suitable for activities such as badminton, basketball, netball, football and volleyball. There will also be a cafe, fitness gym, group exercise studios and a spinning studio. View a video of the arena being constructed here.

About Fire Fighting Enterprises
Fire Fighting Enterprises is at the forefront of beam-type optical smoke detection technology, leading the market in providing fire extinguishers for aviation use, and also producing a range of vibration switches for industrial applications. Fire Fighting Enterprises is a Halma Company.

FIRERAY optical beam smoke detectors provide wide area smoke detection when it is impractical to use traditional point-type detectors. They are also ideal for large indoor spaces with high ceilings, such as warehouses, sports arenas, factories or shopping malls. There are two general types of detector: projected, which utilise two detector heads; and reflective, which have one detector head and a reflector (prism).

With the onset of autumn, lower temperatures can cause condensation to form on detector lenses and reflective prisms. This obscures the lens and prism, reducing the amount of infrared (IR) light reaching the detector. This has a similar effect to smoke and can lead to unwanted false alarms.

To combat this issue, Fire Fighting Enterprises (FFE) has developed a new range of anti-condensation heaters for its FIRERAY range of optical beam smoke detectors and reflective prisms.

The detector heater circulates a current of warm air over the lens, raising its ambient temperature by up to 10°C and maintaining the lens at an incrementally higher temperature than the surrounding air. This dramatically reduces the likelihood of condensation forming on the lens which, in turn, reduces the potential for false alarms.

The prism heater is an ultra-slim heating pad which is fixed behind the mounting plate. As with the detector heater, it maintains the temperature of the prism above that of the surrounding air, preventing condensation from occurring and reducing false alarms.

As well as being an ideal solution to the problem of seasonal cold weather, the heaters could also be used year-round on detectors and prisms located in temperature-controlled cold storage areas.

Heaters are available for use with the FIRERAY 3000, FIRERAY 5000 and FIRERAY 50R/100R smoke detector ranges. They are highly practical tools for reducing the environmental impact of condensation and minimising false alarms.

PEL Services Ltd. has completed the design, supply and commissioning of a Public Address (PA) and Voice Alarm (VA) system at London’s Business Design Centre. Located in Islington, the Business Design Centre is one of London’s most popular conference and exhibition venues.  It hosts over 300 events a year and provides a range of stylish, flexible and convenient spaces, from a main exhibition space through to a conference facility and smaller rooms.

The existing PA system, originally supplied by PEL well over 20 years ago, had served well but was due for replacement.  Furthermore, the emergency evacuation system was based on sirens, which PEL has replaced by modern voice evacuation now considered best practice for venues of this nature.

With its variety of event spaces located throughout the Centre, plus the high ceilinged Main exhibition hall used for large exhibitions covering over 2,000 square metres and its surrounding 24 bay areas, the Business Design Centre is an acoustically challenging environment.  PEL Services used CAD acoustic modelling to ensure the most effective system design for the different areas and predict the intelligibility (STI) of the system to comply with the relevant BS & EN Standards for safe and efficient evacuation.

At the heart of the new PA/VA system installed by PEL is a Bosch Praesideo digital system.  Unlike traditional PA systems, Praesideo uses a network configuration rather than having all system elements connected to a central controller; this architecture gives real freedom in system design.  The ‘daisy-chain’ network topology means system elements can be connected to virtually any point and any type of equipment to be located wherever most suitable in the building (e.g. power amplifiers closer to loudspeakers).  What’s more, by connecting the network ends together, a ‘redundant’ loop is created so any break in the cable doesn’t affect operation – an important consideration in an emergency system.

The Praesideo system was specified by PEL to drive Bosch LBC 3210 XLA (Extended Listening Area) Line Array Loudspeakers in the main exhibition hall and entrance area.  These speakers were considered ideal for this environment due to their ability to create a clear, fuller sound which is distributed more evenly over a wider area; their chic, slim design also made them an attractive addition.  To extend coverage beyond the Main Hall System, the Gallery & Mezzanine Balcony Levels have been fitted with Bosch Ceiling Loudspeakers with Mounting Box and Suspension Kits.

The Conference Centre & Gallery Exhibition Hall have false ceilings throughout, so PEL fitted Bosch Ceiling Loudspeakers designed for this purpose, along with Fire Resistant Domes which isolate and protect speakers from a potential building fire.

For back of house areas, such as corridors, stairs and toilets that mainly have solid ceilings and walls, PEL was able to use standard Bosch Metal Cabinet Loudspeakers, surface mounted.

“We are very happy with the new system PEL has put in place” states Bradley Cordes, Venue Services Director for the Business Design Centre.  “We wanted clarity of sound and the new system provides just that; it’s sharp, clear and loud and meets all modern safety standards.”
