Mitsubishi Electric has launched additional R32 models with the new MSZ-AP range of wall-mounted units that blend energy efficiency with a modern, white design.

“These three new models give even more choice for installers and make R32 available for even more situations”, explains Carl Dickinson, product specialist for the company. “We are looking to make it as easy as possible for the industry to transition away from existing refrigerants so that everyone can play their part in delivering energy efficiency in ways that minimise the impact on the environment.”

The 2.5, 3.5 and 5kW models are rated either A+++ or A++ and boast outstanding benefits including industry-leading low noise levels and a built-in W-Fi interface.

The range offers highly energy efficient operation with the units all utilising R32 refrigerant, which has a much lower global warming potential (GWP) than R410A.

“The price of R410A is also rising significantly month by month so we want to ensure that both customers and installers not only have an alternative, but also get the added benefit of increased performance and advanced controls,” adds Dickinson.

The built in Wi-Fi interface within the MSZ-AP range enables the full control and monitoring via the company’s MELCloud app, delivering remote control and interrogation of any system.

The units include double vanes to distribute airflow evenly throughout the room and offer weekly timers as standard to provide greater control of scheduling

“These fantastic new models also incorporate our Replace Technology which means that in many cases they can be swopped for older systems utilising existing pipework,” adds Dickinson. “This makes them suitable for both new installations and upgrades and we are expecting a lot of interest from the market.”

Rinnai’s latest innovation in the energy efficient fast delivery of instantly useable hot water is the Infinity Solo Re-Circulator water heater.

The Rinnai Infinity Solo condensing and low NOX water heater is the first of its kind for the UK to combine the advanced technology of wall mounted continuous flow water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder, all in one compact footprint.

The design parameters of this product empowers specifiers, designers, installers and engineers to benefit from unique Rinnai technology in applications it was once not previously possible.  For instance, the Infinity Solo will have both 35kW and 54kW sized appliances, ensuring sites with a smaller gas meter can readily use this technology.  The larger Infinity Solo model will also act as a high-efficiency alternative to gas fired storage appliances that exist in today’s market.

The cylinder is stainless steel and this reduces the weight compared to glass lined models, and it makes transportation and installation a lot easier. As well as the difference in weight, the cylinders also have extremely low heat loss figures (as low as 1.41kW/h day), so the user pays less to maintain the heat within the tank.

One other benefit of the Infinity Solo using a stainless steel cylinder is that the life expectancy of the material is far greater than that of a glass-lined equivalent as glass suffers from thermal shock causing it to crack after a period of time.

The Infinity Solo range is also renewables compatible and supplied pre-fitted with a coil, meaning that the primary energy source will always be from renewable gains and the complementary Rinnai water heater will only apply the precise amount of gas to boost the difference in temperature.

Rinnai manufactures the energy efficient Infinity range of gas fired continuous flow water heaters and space heaters. The Infinity brand carries the widest range of condensing water heaters on the market today with the most impressive efficiencies in operation, leading the field in technological innovation.

The new innovation from Warmup promises a rapid solution for the installation of an electric underfloor heating system. The heated decoupling system from Warmup provides handy, easy and quick installation for installers, but also some unique features for the homeowners’ piece of mind for years to come.

The new heated decoupling system is called DCM-PRO. The convenience of installing the system derives from the following features. The DCM-PRO Mat has a self-adhesive backing that can be attached straight to the subfloor, avoiding the need for mixing additional tile adhesive to affix the mat to the subfloor. Therefore you no longer have to waste time waiting for the base layer of tile adhesive to dry before installing the cable.  This in turn will save you time and money during the installation process.

The DCM-PRO mat has pre-spaced channels on the mat that make it very easy and quick to space and lay the cable evenly, saving you time when measuring and calculating the correct spacing to output ratio for your project. The pre-spacing ensures accurate spacing throughout the installation, providing a consistent output of 150W/m2. The DCM-PRO Cable has unique qualities of flexibility and durability that provide maximum reliability during installation.

The DCM-PRO system from Warmup comprises of a self-adhesive castellated membrane and a heating cable that can easily be covered with a range of different floor types.  Since the self-adhesive layer of the DCM-PRO Mat also acts as a self-healing decoupling layer, it eliminates the need for additional fixings and other time-consuming installation processes.

Self-levelling compound can be poured directly onto the system. A self-levelling compound allows the system to heat effectively and protect the floor covering material such as tiles, laminate, engineered wood, vinyl, and carpet.

Once the DCM-PRO system is installed, it is easy to tile over or cover with a different floor finish. If self-levelling compound is not used, tile adhesive can be directly applied onto the system and tiles laid on top, with no risk of any damage to the heater. The unique design of the system ensures that the cable stays safe during the installation. Therefore, risk of mechanical damage to the cable due to stepping on the system with heavy boots is minimised.

The most striking benefit of the system for a homeowner is the self-healing feature of the DCM-PRO mat that protects the floor covering from cracks or gaps caused by the seasonal changes to the sub floor. The patent pending self-healing decoupling layer of the DCM-PRO mat contracts and expands to deal with seasonal changes preventing damage to floor coverings. Unlike traditional fabric-based decoupling layers which tear upon movement, the DCM-PRO expands and contracts for durable, long-term protection. Rated as High Performance, DCM-PRO is proven to protect tiled floors from cracking (ANSI 118.12:5.4).

The DCM-PRO cable is offered with a Lifetime Warranty and SafetyNet™ Installation Guarantee when installed with the DCM-PRO Mat.  For more information, please click here.

Keylex mechanical digital locks have been installed on the doors of the staff rooms and the first aid room at the new North Somerset Enterprise and Technology College campus, just completed by main contractor BAM Construction. The locks were supplied by Relcross via IRM of Yate, near Bristol.

The majority of doors at the new £12m complex are controlled by proximity cards issued to all students and staff but some areas are designated for separate control by mechanical digital locks. These are the four staff rooms plus the first aid room and similar Keylex locks are already fitted to all the other staff rooms and first aid rooms on the other college campuses. This provides a common access control solution for all of these areas giving immediate access for authorised users without the need for a proximity card.

The K700 lock that was specified is a standard duty, high security lock ideal for many hundreds of operations per day. It has an entirely mechanical operation with no electronics or electrical wiring involved. Code combinations from twelve buttons provide over 4,000 code permutations from the recommended three to six digit codes. The slipping clutch mechanism nullifies forced attack or vandalism from the outside and the stainless steel buttons will not indicate regular usage patterns. Free exit is allowed from the inside, without code entry, regardless of the lock status. The lock can also be set to allow free access from both sides when required.

Relcross Sales and Marketing Director, Stuart McMaster, said “while electronic access control can be very effective there are still circumstances where a mechanical digital lock is the best option. It’s a quick fix solution. No wiring is required, there are no batteries to replace, just solid mechanical reliability for which Keylex locks are renowned.”

North Somerset Enterprise and Technology College is a free school for 14-19 year olds and has a strong focus on science, technology, engineering and maths. The school opened in 2014 based at Weston College’s South West Skills Campus but has now moved to its brand new, purpose built home. The new £12m building is in Weston-super-Mare’s Junction 21 Enterprise Area and includes an all-weather sports pitch, canteen, lecture theatre, sports hall and technology and enterprise spaces, as well as a purpose-built science floor with laboratories and an outdoor terrace for experiments. NSETC is part of the Inspirational Futures Trust, which is sponsored by the Weston College Group.

Recent recipient of a Schueco Excellence Award 2016, Alan Robinson, MD of Alumen, explains the work that was involved in the project that saw them win the Residential Development Commendation award

The Schueco Excellence awards are presented for ‘excellence in the design and installation of Schueco systems’.  As a long-standing Schueco fabricator, receiving this award really is a testament to the knowledge and experience we’ve gained fabricating and installing the Scheuco range during our long history.

The Project

Built in association with customer QDevelopments, The Longfords – a mews development of 7 houses and a duplex apartment on a brownfield site in Teddington, a suburb of Greater London – was designed by 5plus Architects to provide living spaces that have a seamless ’flow’ between the inside and outside. Set amongst Victorian properties, this new build project demanded a blend of both modern and traditional architectural styles to contrast against its surroundings.  The three rear properties make the most of natural light through the use of sliding and folding doors at the back and 2m wide by 2.6m high glazed screens at the front. These are set back in the brick cavity with full height vents to the side behind vertical timber louvres.  These large glazed apertures that made this project so much more challenging were perfectly suited to the Schueco range, thanks to their generous sizing capacity and slim sightlines.

To this end, Alumen fabricated and installed the ASS70HI Lift& Slide patio and ASS70FD bi-folding doorsets finished in metallic pearl/beige.  AWS75 tilt&turn windows, in the same finish, were used throughout but every single window had a different configuration of how it fitted in the cavity; some were forward, others pushed back – there wasn’t a standard way.  The tilt&turn windows measured up to 2.6m in height with fixed non-opening lights of up to 2m in width.

Furthermore, the bi-folding profile ASS70FD was used to fabricate the single doors which measured approximately 2.7m in height.

With its clean and contemporary appearance, and phenomenal ability to offer maximum fabrication dimensions of up to 1.2m x 3m per sash on the bi-folding door systems and 3m x 3m per sash on the sliding patios, it is clear that the Schueco products used were perfect for this development and we are pleased it got the recognition it deserved.

What the Judges thought

According to Hugh Pearman, Chair of the judging panel: “When it comes to translating the architect’s concept into reality, it is vital to ensure that the fineness of detail comes through in the finished building”.  Specifically, for this project judges appreciated the modesty of the development and its use of a variety of sliding and folded systems. “It’s nicely restrained,” said Louise Cotter, while Hugh Pearman commented: “This is a good example of a young practice revisiting the terrace typology.”

In addition to being an authorised Schueco partner, as a specialist aluminium fabricator, Alumen also offers the SMART range of products from their Kettering manufacturing facility. They have recently also launched a range of rooflights that offer trade customers a quality, value for money, off the shelf product. Autumn will see another product launch as Alumen bring to market their own in-house designed and engineered bi-fold doors which aims to take the best of bi-fold systems currently available in terms of aesthetics, ease of installation and operation – and improve on them.

Underfloor heating in properties, especially in new builds and new developments is an increasing trend. The luxurious feeling of your toes warming up from the floor sounds appealing but maybe perceived too costly to consider for a ‘normal consumer’ on a small budget. We looked deeper into the benefits of underfloor heating; what makes it more appealing than conventional radiator heating systems and if it is worth of investing in?

We asked people who have installed underfloor heating in their property to give their arguments on why underfloor heating should be something to consider when renovating or building a new home. The most common answer was also the most obvious: Underfloor heating feels cosier and warmer than radiators in the middle of winter. Let’s look at other aspects that were mentioned to demonstrate why installing underfloor heating is worth considering for anyone looking to improve their home. Is underfloor heating at home more of a desirable than an essential?

  1. Fast heat-up time

There are two types of underfloor heating systems; warm water systems (known as hydronic or wet) that heat the floor with hot water pumped through pipes, or electrical underfloor heating where wires are installed beneath the floor to heat the floor up. Both systems provide comfortable radiant heat from the floor for a lifetime. Water based systems take more time to reach the desired temperature, but cost less to run than electric underfloor heating systems. The latter gets to the desired temperature in under 20 minutes. Conventional radiators are far less efficient because they heat the air around them initially, leaving any space away from the radiator cold, whereas underfloor heating heats the floor evenly across the whole room through radiant heat, heating objects rather than air. Finally underfloor heating heats the entire room far quicker than radiators.

  1. Decorating heaven

Radiators take up wall space. Even the slimmest and most efficient radiators still take up some space on the wall, and guards are fitted too, you’re looking at a solution that essentially makes the rooms slightly smaller. You don’t want this. Instead, and as a clear alternative, underfloor heating throughout the room means that you are able to claim that space back. No longer will the radiators eat up the inches; on the contrary, there will be more room to enjoy every inch of your space. Next time you are looking look at walls thinking how to give them an entirely new look, think about the possibility of underfloor heating. With the radiators gone, there is a complete freedom to make those walls shine, take the opportunity to introduce bold colours and finally get that ‘feature’ wall you or your customer always wanted. It’s possible with underfloor heating.

  1. Style

Style is one of the most important factor in defining how homely a living space feels to a person.  Home is a place people spend years making their own. Style will not suffer if underfloor heating is brought in. Whether it’s tile, laminate, carpet or wood, underfloor heating seamlessly integrates, heating the floor to the perfect temperature. The large range of different underfloor heating systems available allows everyone to choose the floor finish of their dreams combining it with the most suitable floor heater underneath.

  1. Clean and clear

Underfloor heating does a great job of ensuring that the air in your rooms is not stuffy. The air is not overheated, which can happen when you have conventional radiators fitted. Not overheating the air makes it clearer, therefore less stuffy. It’s a small feature in a way, but it adds to the overall impact. Furthermore, radiators tend to absorb dust and clutter, being an unwelcome inconvenience to a person suffering from allergies. Underfloor heating is a desired heater for people who suffer from many allergies and need an alternative heating system.

  1. Child-friendly

When safety comes up, the concern with radiators are those metallic edges that can mean that the younger members of your household could find themselves at the wrong end of something sharp. Underfloor heating, for obvious reasons, doesn’t have this problem.

  1. Quick and easy to install

Electric underfloor heaters are easy to install beneath the floor.  What’s more, for people with smaller budgets, underfloor heating can be laid down in the floor construction as a DIY project. Warmup provides a pressure sensitive, adhesive StickyMat solution with the electric wire already applied to it. Laying down an underfloor heating with sticky mat ensures a 35% faster installation speed compared to similar products. The ease and speed of installation results in significant cost reductions. Although electric underfloor heating is a great DIY project for an advanced DIY practitioner, it is still essential to have an electrician to test that the resistance in the wires is sound and everything works correctly.

  1. Less costly

Radiators heat the air, pure and simple. This can often lead to the need to open a window to bring the air temperature down resulting in the wasting of energy and expensive energy bills. Underfloor heating simply heats the floor, which means that you can enjoy the same levels of warmth that a radiator brings, but without the air feeling hot and stuffy. Higher heating costs that come with conventional radiators are also due to their extremely high temperature, usually between 65-75°C. Underfloor heating on the contrary does not have to be heated any higher than 29°C, or, in some cases an even lower 27°C for delicate floor finishes, to warm you up. Therefore, underfloor heating does not use as much energy, bringing your heating bills down.

  1. Heat, at it’s best

Underfloor heating warms a room in a rather unique way. You may be used to radiators heating the air but underfloor heating warms from the ground up. This is less wasteful, makes sure that one gets more for their money, and ensures an all-round more pleasurable heating experience. The reason; when a radiator heats up, the heat moves along the walls upwards. The thermal current of hot air cools as it rises and subsequently drops. This creates an air cycle, meaning that you can feel the hot temperature reflecting from the radiator when close to the radiator or on the other side of the room due to the air cycles created by thermal currents. However, in the middle or on other sides of the room, the temperature remains cool and you can physically feel cold spots. Underfloor heating on the contrary warms up evenly across the room leaving no cold spots.

  1. No Maintenance

This may bring us to our last point. Harping on about the gentle warmth that the underfloor factor brings seems easy, but the best reason is without questions the long-term cost savings. Underfloor heating, when installed correctly, doesn’t need any maintenance for a lifetime. Once the heater has been laid down in the floor construction underneath the floor, it will be up and running for years to come. For people with long-term financial thinking, the investment pays itself back. The room is heated more effectively, and allows you to save money every year on your heating bills. Underfloor heating can spare you up to 15% on your heating bills.

So there you have it. Nine reasons why underfloor heating should really be your next choice when it comes to home improvements. To get a quote visit http://www.warmup.co.uk/get-a-quote/

Underlay is an important element whatever the flooring being used. Using underlay offers several benefits; it reduces walking noise in the room, it makes carpets more comfortable to walk on, it provides heat insulation…and much more!

And now QA Flooring Solutions are introducing Breathe underlay for carpet, a pioneering breakthrough with real health and environmental benefits perfect for today’s home.

Breathe is truly a step forward in the flooring industry, a totally new product made from a natural and sustainable material – wood. And if that’s surprising, wait until you see its unique benefits.

A natural choice for a healthier home

The wood fibres in Breathe come from a fully managed source, with no harmful chemicals or formaldehydes used in production – so not only is it better for the environment, unlike traditional underlays it doesn’t give off any VOCs, harmful vapours or unpleasant smells after installation. It’s even fully biodegradable at the end of its life.

But the biggest benefit from the wood fibres is their breathability. In tests, Breathe filtered out a remarkable 95% of dust from the air that passed through it, trapping even the smallest particles. That means enhanced air quality, a fresher-feeling home and an easier life for allergy sufferers.  It works at its best when used throughout the property.

A fresh kind of underlay

Breathe passes the applicable BS5808 performance standards.  In particular its high compressive strength helps to keep carpets in excellent condition and make them very comfortable underfoot.

It has an ideal thermal resistance (1.3 tog) for underfloor heating, and is stable, lightweight and easy to cut and install. Its breathability prevents mould and damp building up underneath, so it can be safely laid over old parquet flooring.

A new standard in underlay

Breathe is a really exciting step forward. It has real benefits to offer to homeowners, with the potential to turn underlay from an out-of-sight commodity to a positive lifestyle choice, an investment in a healthier home and the well-being of their families.

TLX Gold has been designed for today’s roofer. Whether it’s a roof refurbishment or new build project it improves thermal performance and eliminates the risk of condensation, it vents moisture like a breather membrane and yet insulates like non-breathable PIR board. TLX Gold is Sd intelligent (the more moisture, the more it breathes) which is why there’s no condensation risk, even without a vapour barrier.

TLX Gold has now been used in over 20,000 roofs in the UK and is fully BBA certified and endorsed by the LABC.

TLX Gold comes with a product performance guarantee, is fast to fit, and many solutions do not require the removal of the existing insulation. We will provide you with solutions that have a guaranteed U-value, condensation risk and an estimate of payback calculations.

TLX Silver has been independently tested by fully accredited test laboratories to the latest British and European standards; it was the first reflective multi-foil insulation to be awarded a prestigious BBA Certificate of Agrement, and our roof and wall solutions combining TLX Silver with secondary insulation were the first to be recognised by LABC and given Registered Detail status.

TLX Silver has been used in numerous new build houses with the approval of NHBC, in loft and barn conversions, or simply when upgrading the performance of existing structures. We provide unrivalled support to our customers. Advice on installation, U-value or condensation risk calculations; CAD drawings or someone to talk to Building Control are all only a phone call away through the Thermal Hotline.

Newcastle College required replacement blinds for a large roofed area. The construction of metal and glass allied to the pitch of the pitch of the roof could have almost been designed as a sound reverberation chamber. The light needed controlling; the fabric had to be robust and durable with a very heavy bottom bar being specified on a blind of 6.0 m drop and the acoustics had to be addressed.

36-blinds-each-2-0-m-wide-x-6-0-m-drop

Nearly 400sqm of glazing, were shaded with the installation of 36 motorised blinds, each 2.0 m wide x 6.0 m drop using the Acoustis 50 fabric. The fabric colour chosen, 0730 (Slate Grey), providing excellent light control with its Tv (visible transmittance) level of 5% meaning that 95% of the light is prevented from entering the chamber. One fabric supplying both light control and acoustic comfort, change the colour and the same fabric offers acoustic comfort with improved heat control, the fabric in colour white having a Solar reflectance of over 70%.

                                 400-sqm-of-rooflight-shaded-with-acoustis-50

So what is acoustic comfort?  You all know the problem, a busy restaurant, a happy drinks party, you are having difficulty understanding somebody only a few feet away, so you speak louder, they speak louder, everybody speaks louder and nobody can hear a flipping thing. Someone shouts, ‘the acoustics are rubbish in here’ and everybody nods. But what can be done about it?

The problem is not noise volume; it is the lack of clarity to the sound. Referred to by acousticians as speech intelligibility or sound reverberation, unintelligibility is caused by sound rebounding from surfaces of differing distances away from the source, their reflections, or echoes, taking varying lengths of time to return. A single sound becomes a chain, multi syllables and multi-words becoming a constant stream of sound. Multiply that up by a number of people speaking at the same time and there is your problem.

How do you solve it? Remove or reduce the reflections. Hard smooth wall and ceiling surfaces part of the problem – glass one of the biggest culprits.

If you could cover the glass with something that absorbs the sound, but is thin and capable of being quickly removed and put away discreetly when not required.

If you could cover the glass with something that also gives good light control, removing glare and provide daytime privacy. If only there was a fabric that absorbs the sound, is thin, gives daytime privacy and good heat control.

There is, the Mermet Acoustis 50, an acoustically absorbent fabric, less than 1 mm thick, with both exceptional fire rating and stability.

Acoustic absorbance is a sought after benefit in many instances, but acoustical transparency can be required in others. The interiors industry regularly seek a fabric to cover walls or ceilings that is acoustically transparent in order that acoustically absorbent foams hidden behind them can still work – similarly home cinemas and screening rooms often wish to hide loudspeakers  within the wall without muffling the sound. The further requirements of fabrics in installations such as these being dimensional stability, allowing the fabric to be pulled taught into position without sagging over time, top level fire ratings along with an attractive easy to clean finish. The Mermet Screen Vision and Satine fabrics are both used in these respects, in the case of the Sv 10% in some considerable quantity.

Key to Mermet fabric use, be it for acoustic absorbance, transparency or another of its myriad other features, is the glass fibre core to the yarn. Mermet have been weaving in glass fibre for over 60 years, with coated yarns for the solar shading industry for over 40 years. The glass fibre cored yarn does not stretch, being made from sand it does not burn. These features facilitating the weaving of wide fabrics, to over 3.0 m, that do not stretch, do not move, lie flat, do not burn. All features required of interior fabrics particularly in the public sectors, be they for shading, tensile structures or large format printing/signage.

Manufacturing the yarn as well as weaving the fabric gives Mermet the control and expertise to engineer features into the fabrics, the yarn coating carrying UV stabilisers, additional fire retardation elements as well as colour pigment. This means Mermet understand and can control solar reflectance, transmission and absorption. With some of the latest coatings the same attention can be directed at thermal resistance and transmittance. All properties being engineered into aesthetically attractive, workshop friendly, durable and therefore more sustainable fabrics.

The Satine, Screen Vision and Acoustis 50 fabrics referred to are just three of nearly 20 fabrics in the current 2015-18 collection, so many more fabrics, more choice and much more performance.

Yeoman Shield’s new Guardian Twin Handrail was installed as part of the ward refurbishment project recently undertaken at Barnsley Hospital, South Yorkshire.

A 350+ bed hospital built in the 1970’s and serving a quarter of a million people in the Barnsley area, the hospital demands a constant regime of maintenance throughout its premises.

Maintaining its high standards, Barnsley Hospital have improved the surroundings and facilities in 6 of the hospital wards, including the discharge unit, female trauma and elective orthopaedic unit.

As part of the refurbishment project Yeoman Shield were employed to remove the old bump rail and handrails and replace them with the dual purpose Guardian Twin Handrail to corridors and waiting areas throughout the 6 wards.

The twin handrail was supplied with a 50mm dia. PVCu upper handrail for support to those who need it and a lower 125mm deep protection rail which standing slightly forward of the handrail, offers protection to both the wall décor and the handrail itself, minimising on repair and replacement.

Supplied in a Pastel Blue colour with contrasting accessories in Pebble Grey the Guardian Twin Handrail from Yeoman Shield was complemented with matching 200mm protection strip and corner protection angles.

A member of the nursing staff on the discharge unit commented “Previously down the corridors in this ward we just had a protection rail but now it has been replaced with a system that offers a handrail as well and we have found it a great help to our clients who attend the unit.”

Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust commented that they have worked with Yeoman Shield previously and have always found their products and workmanship to be of a high standard.

For further details and options on the Yeoman Shield Guardian Twin handrail and the new Guardian 50mm dia. Handrail range go to www.yeomanshield.com/handrails or call 0113 279 5854.

From new concepts to new colours, Master British Stove Maker ESSE is unveiling a host of exciting stove developments from the company’s Lancashire factory.

As well as classic Black, ESSE will now offer stoves finished in Gold, Bronze, Ruby, Iron Grey and Ash White.

ESSE has also unveiled an innovative electric ignition system which is the first of its kind in the industry. Sales Director Mark Blewitt explains: “The historic charm of a traditional woodburner will never go out of style but that doesn’t mean to say that these stoves can’t benefit from the latest developments in modern technology.

“ESSE’s wood-burning stoves can now be ignited with the click of a switch or remote control!

“This ingenious British invention is simple to use and means an end to firelighters; simply load your dry logs in front of the air jet, close the door, press the remote and the five to eight minute lighting cycle begins.

“As well as being clean and safe it is a great solution for ‘cold flue’ or poor draught installations as it pre-warms the flue. It is also ideal for older or less mobile homeowners who don’t need to get down on their hands and knees to light their stove.”

The ESSE ignition system retails for £490 and can be specified with most ESSE stoves. See it in action here.

ESSE engineers continue to build on more than 160 years of experience to ensure that stoves are constantly evolving in both style and performance. From smoke-exempt models and after-burn technology, to gas versions of classic woodburners, cookstoves, electric ignitions, log stores and striking new colour finishes – ESSE stoves continue to fire up the imagination and combine timeless style with modern, convenient, and energy-efficient performance.

There are wood-burning, gas and electric stoves in traditional and contemporary styles, and customers can choose the perfect inset, free-standing, wall-mounted or even flueless model to suit their home.

The quality and reliability that encouraged Shackleton and Scott to take an ESSE to the Antarctic, is the same hand-built, British quality that ESSE owners enjoy today.

This week Poole Lighting have launched 3 new websites, one for each of our 3 independent brands: Endon Lighting, Saxby Lighting and Interiors 1900; each designed with a new look and improved navigation resulting in an enhanced user experience for both customer and end users. Following the recent successful launch of four new catalogues, one for each of the brands and another for Endon Home, we wanted our websites to have the same, fresh new feel of each of these.

saxby-catalogue-total

We’ve added new sections to our Saxby Lighting & Endon Lighting websites that are more consumer targeted, including a ‘Wishlist’, ‘Features’ and ‘News’. We endeavour to have products that are the forefront of design, on-trend and have the latest LED technology as we the preferred supplier for our customers. Our goal was to make the websites more informative, so in ‘Features’, articles can be found detailing interior design trends, light placement guides and technologies that are present in our new or extended ranges and featured new products. ‘News & Events’, has up to date details about upcoming events including trade shows and breakfast mornings.

The exciting addition of a ‘Wishlist’ is a function on all 3 websites. As these are consumer facing, our customer’s customers can now use our sites. Existing customers will still be able to use the sites in the same way once logged in to their trade account, but the user can now browse our websites and create a wishlist, which they can then email to their supplier or designer of choice. In this way, our customers can use our websites as their own sales tool.

Our new websites: www.saxbylighting.com, www.endon.co.uk and www.interiors1900.com are now live. Click on the links to explore, and please get in touch to let us know what you think! Connect with us on LinkedIn or Twitter (@saxbylighting, @Endon_Lighting) to stay updated with news or to get in touch.

One of the North West’s leading racecourses, Haydock Park, has recently refurbished its Final Furlong Bar to include Max-Top Quartz surfaces on its bar tops.

CJM Maintenance Solutions Limited managed the project and selected the Black Onyx Sparkle worktop for the bar due to its durability and stylish finish.

Mike Hamilton of CJM Maintenance, commented: “We have used Max-Top Quartz in previous projects, and we have found the surfaces to be of excellent quality, offering a solution that’s aesthetically pleasing and most importantly, long-lasting to withstand the thousands of visitors using it year on year.

“It was a race against time for Haydock Park as they needed the bar area refitting in just a couple of days therefore Max-Top Quartz was the obvious choice due to its immediate availability and ease of installation. The end result looks fantastic!”

Max-Top Quartz, which is available in up to 10 finishes and comes with a 25 year guarantee, is a unique product in the surface market. Featuring a patented interior honeycomb structure, the product offers the aesthetic benefits of a solid stone surface, with the advantage of a deeper 40mm profile.

Stephen Moss, managing director of Max-Top, commented: “Max-Top Quartz is a unique, lightweight surface that is both stronger than traditional stone and easier to install – a simple and cost effective way of adding significant value to the look and feel of a room.

“Our modular quartz surfaces have been a real success in hospitality environments where quality and durability is paramount, and the ease of installation means they can be extremely helpful when planning a large-scale project.”

Mike concluded: “The new surfaces create a brilliant finish in the bar, and are going to last for years to come. We are very happy with the product, but more importantly, the client is delighted!”

For more information about Max-Top please visit www.maxtopquartz.co.uk, call 0161 224 0333 or visit the Max-Top YouTube page to watch a short installation video.

Renowned experimental architect, Achim Menges, recently said carbon fiber is the architecture market’s biggest untapped resource. He added that carbon fiber in architecture represents a paradigm shift that could create a fourth industrial revolution.

As architects from around the country discovered at the American Institute of Architects’ 2016 Convention in Philadelphia, a composites revolution may be coming sooner rather than later. During AIA 2016, students from UCLA, Temple University, and Georgia Tech displayed innovative composite designs as a part of the American Composites Manufacturers Association’s (ACMA) first-ever Composites in Architecture Design Challenge.

UCLA won the challenge with their composite fabrication of “mega-panels,” using robotic technology to fabricate panels without a mold. The second place entry in the challenge, from Temple, drew inspiration from Menges’ recently-unveiled Elytra Filament Pavilion at London’s famous Victoria and Albert Museum. Georgia Tech’s third place entry explored waste-less fabrication with its composite “balloon panels.” If you were not able to attend AIA, you will have the opportunity to see these designs at CAMX at the ACE Pavilion!

CAMX – September 26-29, 2016 in Anaheim, California – is your opportunity to pick the brains of many experts in architectural composites. Discounted registration and housing are available for CAMX 2016. Now in its third year, CAMX, co-produced by the American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA) and the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE), has become North America’s premier event for composite products, solutions, networking, and advanced industry thinking.

CAMX is an all-encompassing event that connects and advances all of the world’s composites and advanced materials communities – research and development, engineering, manufacturing, OEMs, service providers and end users.

During CAMX on September 28, a special full-day of architectural sessions and events tailored for architects, design professionals, architectural students and faculty will be presented. Use registration code – CAMXAR– at checkout, and attend a full-day of architectural sessions and events at CAMX 2016 for free!

Forget the old heavy wool blankets of years ago say hello to the new generation of luxury wool duvets, mattress toppers and pillows and get ready for a refreshing and remarkably comfortable sleep- night after night. And the very British and much-loved Southdown sheep with their teddy bear faces provide the perfect wool for the finest range of wool bedding.

But Why Wool?

  • Unlike synthetic, down or feather duvet fillings, wool has excellent wicking qualities which means it will help regulate the micro-climate around your body. Wool has the natural ability to draw up to 30% of its own weight in moisture away from your skin from where is just evaporates through the fibre. It will therefore cool you down when you need to without causing you to break into a sweat. But conversely, wool will keep you warm as toast so no more waking up needing to grab an extra layer in winter or tossing off the overly hot quilt in summer. Wool can even accommodate thermal differences between sleeping partners; adjusting your warmth needs relative to that of your partner while still keeping your individual micro climate just right for you – great for sharing and no more fighting over the duvet!
  • Wool duvets greatly reduce the incidence of night sweats especially associated with children and ladies over 50 going through the menopause. Under a wool duvet you can expect a marked increase in the quality of sleep in addition to the quantity – our customers report that they sleep through the night and wake feeling refreshed and well.
  • Wool is a good insulator but more importantly, it breathes and therefore in a duvet it regulates the level of moisture around your body. Pure down is a better insulator but does not breathe and so allows moisture to build up around you. Feather/down combinations are poorer insulators and even worse when it comes to moisture build up. This is the reason why under down/feathers and synthetic duvets you wake feeling overly hot and sweaty. This will not happen under wool.
  • Wool is hypo-allergenic – it will help reduce problems associated with skin irritations and will not encourage the presence of dust mites or mould and so helps to control allergies and breathing problems. This is achieved through the scouring of our raw wool, the end product being of no interest to dust mites once the lanolin has been fully removed. Because wool wicks moisture away from your body from where it evaporates through the fibre, not only you but also the duvets remains comfortably dry so there is no dampness which might encourage the growth of mildew or mould.
  • Our products are not treated with harmful chemicals, for example, pentachlorophenol (nasty stuff that causes eye infections, breathing difficulties and skin problems among other horrible ailments).
  • Wool is safe because it is a natural flame retardant. It won’t ignite easily and does not spread flames as synthetics do. Also unlike thermoplastic fibres, wool will not melt into a sticky mass, which can adhere to the skin and cause severe burns.  Wool simply smoulders down to an ash that is non-sticking and cool to the touch.  Most importantly, it does not generate toxic gases when it smothers.
  • Wool is sustainable and it is obtained without cruelty unlike down and feather duvet fillings. 70% of the down and feathers used in bedding and clothing come from China and you don’t want to know how this down is “collected” – it’s really Our sheep don’t particularly like being sheared but it is over in minutes and they appreciate being freed from their heavy fleeces.
  • Wool is durable. Wool fibres resist tearing and are much hardier than cotton, silk or rayon. Treat it with respect and your wool duvet will last for years.

But Why Southdown Wool as Opposed to Other Wools?

In theory, almost any wool can be used to make a duvet – you will find perfectly acceptable Merino and Texel products on the market, for example. However, only Southdown wool makes an exceptional duvet. This is because of the very dense physical nature of Southdown wool. It has a short staple which is the length of an individual fibre – about 2-3 inches, making the wool soft, very bouncy, like cloud-like cotton wool  which lends itself to the prefect duvet filling.

Other wools have longer staples lengths and this makes the duvets made out of these wools flatter and less bouncy. Also be careful to check that the wool has been properly washed and scoured. If there are traces of lanolin left in the wool, the duvet will smell “sheepy” and this is not acceptable. Correctly processed wool does not smell rural and if you are in doubt ask for a sample of the fill and check it out for yourself. We are always happy to send out swatches of our fill.

And another thing about Southdown Duvets – we will consider you a customer for life and offer an extremely flexible refund for exchange policy. This means we will work with you on a personal one-on-one basis to ensure we get you enjoying and benefitting the extra right weight of duvet, thickness of pillow and comfort of the mattress topper to suit your needs. We understand that everyone is different and our sleep needs are just as unique. We also understand the importance of a decent night’s sleep and that its fundamental to your health and well-being.

So call Jessica, the Southdown sheep farmer who has become known as “the Duvet Lady” to find out more about how Southdown wool bedding can transform your sleep.
