Ergonomics in Design

On 22nd September at the Design Council in London, the Chartered institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors will be launching our first ever ‘Ergonomics in Design Seminar’
This is an opportunity for designers to learn about tools and techniques that will help to ensure that their designs are truly user-centred.
At the centre of the event are two workshops:
Designing for Changing Demographics
With an ageing population how do we ensure inclusivity in later life? How do we design for physical issues of ageing and also cognitive impairments such as dementia for example? A strong emphasis will be placed on discussing and demonstrating how the application of tools can be used to directly inform and influence the design process. Led by Dan Jenkins of DCA Design.
Measuring Improvement in New Designs
The role of ergonomics and human factors in generating possible design solutions is increasingly understood but how do we measure just how successful design changes have been? The workshop will focus on some of the most commonly used techniques; task analysis, error analysis and user requirements assessment. Led by Robin Ellis of RED Design Ergonomics.
The workshops promise to be stimulating, enjoyable and valuable for anyone who wants to learn practical skills for evaluating and improving design. There will be opportunities to discuss the methods with the facilitators and to draw on their wide, varied experience.
The event will take place at the same time as judging for the Ergonomics Design Award, presented in recognition of excellence in the application of ergonomics to design. You will have a chance to talk to the shortlisted entrants about their designs and to see their work.
