Hillside

Hillside is a striking, modern large-scale renovation and extension of a Victorian Property, in the coastal village of Lympstone in East Devon, in South West England.

A former bed and breakfast built in the Victorian era, the property was taken on by a great client who saw the potential of the house and its site to convert it into a ‘forever home’. The new modern 2-storey extension, extensive internal refurbishment works and comprehensive landscaping scheme allows the design to work cohesively together.

The client, who owns Complete Solutions, a high-end installer of home cinema, multi-room audio systems and smart home systems gave In Ex Design a brief to not only to create an outstanding family home but also a unique setting in which to showcase the new technologies Complete Solutions supplies. The client’s expertise of modern technology and the level of attention to detail is apparent throughout the design – from construction details to spacial design, from furniture layouts to selection of artwork. The result is a grand yet intimate five-bedroom space which adapts effortlessly to indoor/outdoor living and is modern both in terms of appearance and operation.

“It’s one of those surprising sites.” Says Julie-Ann Clements, Director of In Ex Design “Right in the middle of the village – and you would never believe what lies behind the front door!”

The original three storey Victorian house was renovated to provide a family snug and formal dining room on the ground floor. Taking full advantage of the period styling whilst including modern interior details such as a secret door to the extended garage. Above, the first floor forms the master suite with an en-suite, walk through dressing room and office. The second floor includes two bedrooms, bathroom and a play room.

A glazed link connects the modern timber-clad extension which provides a generous open plan kitchen, dining, living space and associated utility rooms. The first floor of the extension includes a snug cinema room, equipped with bar and pool table as well as a bedroom and bathroom for guests.

The garden landscaping delivers defined spaces for the modern family dynamic. A morning and evening terrace are accessed through full height glazed sliding doors, allowing the open plan living space to extend outdoors, each area benefiting from the progression of the day’s sun. A generous lawn area creates open space for the children to play, with the mandatory trampoline built into the ground, concealed from view.

With an eye to the future hillside is hi-tech and fully automated, along with its secret doors and hidden architectural features it makes a contemporary yet playful space for the whole family, readily adaptable to future advancements in technology.
