A newly refurbished care home near Abergavenny features nylon door hardware from HOPPE UK to great effect. Different coloured hardware has been used on each floor of the Glaslyn Retirement Home to help residents orientate themselves. The hardware schedule was put together in response to a tight brief to help keep residents safe and secure.<\/p>\n
The HOPPE hardware was scheduled by architectural ironmongers Price and Oliver, working in closely with architect Roger Field at local practice FTAA. As part of the refurbishment of the home and the construction of a new extension, HOPPE nylon pull handles, kick and finger plates plus door stops and escutcheons were fitted on more than one hundred doors.<\/p>\n
Robin Chatwin of Price and Oliver explains the thinking behind the hardware schedule. \u201cWe selected a different colour from the HOPPE nylon hardware range for each floor of the home to help the residents, many of whom have dementia, to find their way around more easily.\u201d He continues \u201cWe wanted to give a feel that wasn\u2019t too institutional but which met all of the myriad regulations and the client\u2019s high specification for performance and safety.\u201d<\/p>\n
HOPPE\u2019s Paris range handles in a variety of colours were selected as they comply with all of the dimensional requirements of BS8300 with a return to door design. The handles have a 21mm steel core and, as such have been successfully tested to BS EN1634 Part1 for 30 and 60 minutes timber fire doors.<\/p>\n
Another important feature of the scheme is the use of HOPPE escape locks on the residents\u2019 rooms. It was important for residents to be able to get out of their rooms quickly and easily in the event of fire,\u201d says Robin Chatwin. \u201cUsing ARRONE AR915 escape locks from HOPPE with a compatible lever handles meant that we had a compete complete CE Marked Lockset to comply with regulations and which are so easy to use as the handle overrides the deadbolt and latch.\u201d<\/p>\n
