    The Bathroom Switch

    The Aycliffe Young People’s Centre provides high quality, specialist secure accommodation for up to 42 young people between the ages of 11 and 17, most of whom have complex problems and need intensive support to turn their lives around.  The centre was purpose-built, and opened in 2011.  The unit incorporates a central laundry which handles all the bed linen, towels, kitchen clothes etc and which was  equipped by Armstrong Commercial Laundry Systems with two Primus FS13/3 washer extractors, each with a capacity of 13kg, and two Huebsch 16kg tumble dryers.  The residents’ personal laundry is done by themselves under supervision in satellite units equipped with semi commercial machines.

    The multidisciplinary design consultancy Morgan Sindall Professional Services and Archial, the international architectural practice, have designed a primary school that makes maximum use of natural light, wind and water to become the first of its kind in the UK to achieve the highest official recognition for its green credentials.

    The Carnegie Primary School in Fife was certified as ‘outstanding’ in an official BREEAM assessment – the recognised standard for innovation in sustainable building design – after Morgan Sindall Professional Services and Archial maximised an open brief to propose a design that was not only ‘green’ in its ambition, but was also sympathetic to its surroundings and practical for everyday school and where appropriate, community use.
