The demand for polished concrete flooring is growing; it is hard wearing, utilises the existing substrate and looks good.

The process of polishing this type of surface with floor grinders is similar to refinishing wood with a floor sander. Concrete grinders are used to gradually grind down the concrete surface using a combination of diamond tooling and formulated liquids to achieve the desired shine and smoothness. A properly finished and maintained surface is likely to give 100+ years of service, whereas other materials, in much shorter time frames, will peel, flake, stain, chip, bubble or fade.

Historically creating a good looking, long lasting polished concrete floor has been messy, complicated and often time consuming. However Ultrafloor have developed a superior solution to anything else on the market. The machinery used from surface preparation to polishing has given clients versatility, speed, maneuverability, productivity, and the results set them apart from the competition.

Ultrafloor have utilised the WerkMaster range of grinding machines, all of which can uniquely grind, sand, strip, buff, burnish, polish, and edge to within 1/8′′ (3 mm) of the wall – 7 machines in one. The only decision that needs to be made is choosing the appropriate sized machine for the job – from kitchen worktop to a 10,000 meter plus floor. The two technologies that has enabled this breakthrough are firstly the use of eight counter rotating discs (conventionally single/ double head or planetary machines have been used) and secondly simple to use ‘plug in tooling’, that can easily be changed per application- giving each machine full versatility. Furthermore all machines are compatible with the MaxVac range of vacuums making floor preparation a virtually dust free process.

The final step is how to keep the floor looking great and slip free. Ultrafloor have developed an environmentally friendly sealer and cleaning formulations to eliminate high maintenance and surface break down. These formulations ensure stain and etching resistance to acids, wine, coffee, vinegar and other chemicals- plus a slip free formula that exceeds industry standards.

A properly prepared, polished and sealed floor is a valuable investment, either in your home or within a commercial environment. The Ultrafloor solution enables those that use it to enjoy the benefits of having a distinctively beautiful, long lasting, safe, easy to clean and maintain concrete floor.

The Westgate School first opened its doors in 1958 and now serves a wide geographical area to the west of Slough in Berkshire. It is currently expanding its student numbers and by 2014 it will deliver high quality comprehensive education to over 1,000 11-19 year olds. The Westgate School has levels of achievement above the average for all schools nationally.

A policy of inclusivity is demonstrated through its excellence in care, guidance, support and personal development. It is also the designated school in its vicinity for students with physical disabilities who are integrated in mainstream education.

701R EUR-60 CO RGBBuilding regulations state that any non-domestic structure with more than one storey must provide a safe area of refuge for any person who cannot easily use fire escapes, lifts and stairs. Maureen Mallinson, Business Manager at The Westgate School, explains, ‘Our disabled students are often taught in first floor classrooms. Therefore, as some of them are unable to be removed from their custom-built wheelchairs, in the event of a fire or other emergency they have to congregate in one of three designated refuge areas while the emergency services configure an appropriate evacuation strategy.’

In an emergency situation, staff and other responsible adults need to know the exact location of the disabled students. This information needs to be available quickly so that relevant action can be taken. Obviously, this can be a highly distressing situation, so it is vital that the students have access to a system that is both simple and effective.

Eaton’s security business recommended local security partner, DA Security Systems, to install a personal alarm system. The company’s managing director, Lee Upton, comments, ‘This was a very specific set of circumstances that required a best-in-class solution. We have worked closely with Eaton Security for a number of years and the quality of their products is only matched by their service and support. I was confident that the company would be able to offer something suitable.’

After arranging a meeting, Luke Turton, security systems specialist at Eaton, visited the site and offered his recommendations. As a result, all disabled students who are unable to use the lift in the event of an emergency situation have now been issued with either a Eaton Security 701r pendant or a 702r ‘watch’ style narrow band FM radio transmitter, depending on their preference, which are worn during school hours. Designed to be robust and reliable, these transmitters are powered by a lithium manganese dioxide battery, which is designed to give at least 20,000 operating cycles, or three years of life if used twice per day.

Asked how the system works, Turton responds, ‘When activated an alert is sent to a Eaton Security 768r radio receiver that is integrated with a paging system. This, in turn, sends a message to all members of staff, who are then able to pinpoint the exact location of the student. A specially installed light in the area goes green when the message has been successfully sent, in order to reassure the student at what can be a stressful time.’

The highly secure 768r narrow band receiver enables users to see at a glance the status of up to eight transmitters and by adding the company’s 769 expanders that figure can rise up to 32 transmitters. In addition DA Security installed dedicated cameras in refuge areas, which transmit images to a central monitor placed at the main reception area – essential as an indicator to the emergency services as to the position of students located on the first floor

The installation of the new system was straightforward and DA Security’s team were able to do the work during the summer holidays so as to avoid any disruption to The Westgate School’s day-to-day activities. Commenting on the installation process, Lee Upton states, ‘Functionality and flexibility are built into the design of Eaton Security’s products, which always helps. Although this project was complicated in places, Eaton Security’s Technical Support team – many of which have been installers themselves – were always on hand to answer any questions that we had.’

Staff and students alike have warmly welcomed the system and during regular evacuation practice sessions it has proven to be effective, providing peace of mind for all concerned. The final word goes to The Westgate School’s Maureen Mallinson, who concludes, ‘Finding a solution that would meet all our needs was proving difficult until Lee recommended Eaton Security. The products are incredibly user friendly and I’m confident that in the event of an emergency they will help ensure the safety of our disabled students.’

Waterloo Air Products plc. is proud to announce our certification to ISO 14001.

With every business having to scrutinise its processes, comply with legislation and ensure that its operations have minimal impact on the environment, any tool that can help ease the process must be welcome.

ISO 14001 is just such a tool; Waterloo adopted a common practice for both quality and environmental awareness over two decades ago.

When the template for the ISO 14000 series was developed in 1996, our processes only asked for fine tuning rather than complete change.

What is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 essentially maps out an environmental system that helps businesses in any industry looking to avoid depleting natural resources or damaging to the world around us.

It is fast becoming a must-have certification for any business; whilst ISO 14001 identifies area’s such as lowering energy consumption, cutting down on raw materials and waste disposal, it is also conducive to cost savings.

The standard helps identify and improve operational efficiencies which can lead to lower distribution costs, reduced insurance cover costs, and give you a significant advantage over competitors when tendering for projects.

How did we do it?

Waterloo received the certification at the end of 2013, the whole process having been of immense value.

We have an environmental policy that provides us with a useful framework.

All employees are aware of the environmental issues that affect the business; with their help we have reduced waste production by adopting waste minimisation measures and implementing recycling and recovery practices where possible.

Recycling is a major part of our strategy and Waterloo uses recycled packaging wherever possible.

What have we achieved?

To-date Waterloo has achieved a reduction of waste to landfill of 13% since 2012 and increased waste to recycling by 12%.

We have also reduced the risk of groundwater and surface water pollution by ensuring that all chemicals and waste products are effectively controlled and managed.

To further reduce our energy consumption, machinery and process are regularly reviewed and where possible new practices are implemented.

Looking to the future

Waterloo has undertaken a number of projects: replacement of equipment with energy equivalents, installation of energy efficient lighting, use of PIR where appropriate, and use of power monitors are just a few.

Dichroic film from diversified technology company, 3M, has been used to create stunning colour shift light effects by design student, Lisa Alcock.  The innovative multi-coloured artwork and jewellery is being exhibited at the New Designers show at London’s Business Design Centre.

According to Lisa Alcock, 3M dichroic film had a dramatic influence on her final year project, “I discovered the dichroic film at 100% Design last year and it has enabled me to produce the wonderful light and colour effects I had envisaged but struggled to create cost effectively.  My window panels, light boxes and jewellery have been created at a fraction of the cost of similar glass and acrylic materials.”  She continued, “The film has been amazingly simple to work with and gives my work beautiful textured light responsive surfaces which can be used in a wide variety of installations.”

Dichroic Film from 3M is available in Chill and Blaze colours for application to glass, plastic or acrylic surfaces as a visual opaque or decorative graphic. The Chill products shift colours from the transmissive cool tones of blue, magenta and yellow to the reflective colours gold and blue. The Blaze products shift from the warm tones of cyan, blue and magenta to red and gold. The colours seen by the viewer – from either side of the glass surface – are influenced by the environment, lighting, viewing angle and mounting surface colour.

Depending on the application requirement, designers can opt for the film only version – DF-Chill and DF-Blaze – or the adhesive version – DF-A-Chill and DF-A-Blaze – which can also be printed on in order to incorporate logos or designs, if desired. Whereas these two products are recommended for plastic or acrylic surfaces only, the third product in the range – DF-PA Chill and DF-PA Blaze – is recommended for use on any smooth glass material. This film is not printable and features a pressure sensitive adhesive.

All products in the Dichroic Film range are simple to apply for a smooth, wrinkle-free and bubble-free finished surface, and are easy to clean with mild detergent, water and a soft cloth. They are highly durable for long-lasting vibrancy and, as and when design needs change, the film can be taken off without any damage to the original surface. The results are truly stunning and reveal the endless possibilities for transforming all manner of spaces such as entrances, storefronts, roof windows, partitions, glazing, skylights and curtain walls, as well as lighting fixtures and more.

In one of the largest projects of its kind in Europe, Future Energy Solutions (FES) has announced the successful installation of the 50,000th LED luminaire for National Car Parks (NCP) since work began in January 2014 on phase one of a contract to install energy efficient lighting in over 150 multi-storey car parks through the UK.

The fact that this has been achieved ahead of schedule is testament to Future Energy Solutions’s proven delivery and technical capabilities.

National Car Parks (NCP) is a true British success story and will be familiar to all motorists. However, with over 150,000 spaces across more than 500 car parks in towns, cities, airports and railway stations, NCP had to address the rising costs associated with its lighting infrastructure. NCP’s CEO, Jo Cooper, commented, ‘We set out to reduce energy lighting bills, lower maintenance costs and offer improved lumen output to provide an enhanced customer experience. Future Energy Solutions convinced us that LED lighting technology would achieve all three objectives.’

NCP has not had to provide any upfront capital expenditure to finance the project, as it is being funded by Future Energy Solutions in partnership with the UK Green Investment Bank. A six-year contract will allow Future Energy Solutions to be remunerated through the cost reduction in energy bills that NCP are benefiting from. This will be achieved by calculating the difference between the energy consumption of the previous lighting system and the reduced energy consumption offered by the new efficient lighting solution. The financial difference is then split between Future Energy Solutions and NCP as a profit share agreement and, in addition, NCP’s energy prices are hedged over the life of the contract, reducing its exposure to upward price trends.

The project is being implemented in a number of distinct phases – Phase 1 began in January 2014 and 50,000 LED luminaires have been installed since then.

Marcus Brodin, commercial director at Future Energy Solutions, stated, ‘We are immensely proud of this achievement, which will generate energy savings of over 67 per cent in the car parks that are being re-lamped. The effect on the environment will also be significant, as NCP’s CO2 emissions will be reduced by 11,000 tonnes per annum and mono-nitrogen oxide (NOx) will be lowered by 248lbs over the same period. This is the equivalent of 10,924 trees being saved or filling up 321,695 fuel tanks every year.’

All of the products installed are performance guaranteed and maintained for the life of the contract at no cost to NCP, therefore taking away the hassle of maintenance and reducing the company’s operational cost. Phase 2 and beyond will see the installation of a further 35,000 LED luminaires across a number of environments such as surface sites, station car parks, local authority sites and other multi-storey car parks.

NCP’s Jo Cooper concluded, ‘I am absolutely delighted with the progress made on this project so far and we are already experiencing the benefits of LED technology. Not only will we save £25,191,720 over the lifetime of the new luminaires, just as importantly, the Future Energy Solutions solution offers a significant and measurable means of reducing our carbon footprint – something which supports our corporate social responsibility (CSR) policy. I’m looking forward to getting Phase 2 underway.’

As the upmarket Llanerch Vineyard has expanded its accommodation, restaurant and cookery school operations in recent years, it became necessary to totally upgrade the laundry from the semi-domestic arrangement that it had previously.  So owner Ryan Davies called in Armstrong Commercial Laundry Systems last year to discuss his requirements.  According to Ryan, right from the first meeting with Tom Lowes, Armstrong’s director, he has been impressed with the service.  “He went right through all our requirements in detail and advised us on the type & size of equipment to meet our needs – and as it turned out that proved to be exactly right,” he said.

The laundry consists of an Amazon W6 6kg capacity washer and an Amazon HSF11 11kg capacity washer with two Huebsch 14kg (271 litre) capacity tumble dryers.  Ryan said that there were a couple of minor teething problems initially which Armstrong sorted out immediately, and since then the machines have been running perfectly – “the equipment is fantastic!” he told us.

As well as being a working vineyard, the site consists of 11 rooms and two cottages plus an 80 seat restaurant and bistro, offering brunch, bistro and afternoon tea menus as well as an a la carte menu in the evenings Monday- Saturday, and lunch on Sundays.     In addition, the site hosts the Angela Gray Cookery School which runs a variety of popular courses and ‘demonstration and dine events’ suitable for corporate events or parties.

The laundry handles all the bedding, towels, table linen and kitchen items for the whole site.   It is operated by five dedicated staff over seven days a week and is in constant use.

Armstrong’s Amazon HSF washers are available in a range of sizes from 7kg – 24kg, offering 15% savings on water consumption and using 20% less energy than the models they replaced.   In addition, the very high spin speed giving a spin factor of 400G cuts residual moisture by up to 20%, thereby reducing the drying time and so the energy consumption of the dryers too. The US built Huebsch dryers are the world’s best selling commercial tumble dryers and range from 8kg (200 litre) to 77kg (1400 litre) capacities.

Whoever contracts to build your basement will probably leave it up to a groundworker or a shuttering carpenter who, on a price, will use all everything specified on the drawings – but badly.

No matter how expensive products are, used badly they don’t work so basements almost always leak.

Basements leak till someone does the work well, whether that’s initially, later or eventually.

The first chance to waterproof a new-build basement is with the concrete. And the cheapest waterproof concrete is sampled on site, tested and certificated completely impermeable. It’s just what you want.

It does not require any expensive membrane, any costly tape or strip or an outrageously dear internal drainage system with a sump or a pump. These are all repair materials yet none last as long as good concrete.

The concrete just needs doing properly with the right steel reinforcement and the right mix design.

We can help you.

We can save you a fortune.

For a fixed fee of £200 plus VAT we will do our best to persuade your engineer or architect to drop his insistence on thousands of pounds (of your money) on extras that might overcome some poor workmanship but probably won’t.

For another £200 plus VAT we can attend site and do our best to get the work done properly.

But in all truth. If you want the work done well you need to employ your own gang temporarily so that neither you or them are out to get each other. We can help with that as well.

We are Waterproof Concrete With Site Supervision Ltd.

Because when the right concrete and the right supervision come together, it is RIGHT FIRST TIME and you pocket the savings.
