Nordic Construction UK has been using CRL’s structural defects insurance cover on all its major national projects for the last two years. When its newly appointed project manager was asked who he’d previously used for insurance provision, he was quick to commend the products, service and cost of CRL’s compared to the obvious high street providers.

Nordic’s challenge

Nordic, a new company starting out in 2009, had ambitious growth plans. Its insurance policies had to be comprehensive and exact, and quickly underwritten to prove Nordic’s security.

The telephone based system plugs in to a standard dedicated analogue telephone socket or phone system extension and the GSM system requires a Pay As You Go or Contract SIM card. The only other requirement is for local power and the intercom can be installed.

Installation is not disruptive as it takes place at the entrance to be controlled and there is no need to put handsets into flats or houses as they are already in place.

The telephone numbers of the flats or houses are then programmed into the intercom system with any access codes required and the system is ready for use.

A visitor enters the flat or house number into the intercom via the keypad and then presses the ‘CALL’ button. The receiver of the call answers the telephone and can speak to the visitor and allow access by pressing a digit on their telephone keypad. This sends a signal to the intercom that activates the door lock or entrance gate and the visitor is able to gain access. If the receiver of the call does not want to grant access they simply put their phone down to end the call.

Trade access can be timed using the internal battery backed time clock which also allows for numbers to be diverted during holidays or at a specific time of day.

Any alterations required to telephone numbers or PIN codes can be actioned by the system installer and can be carried out remotely reducing the need for on-site attendance.

Activity logs can be downloaded by the installer remotely which gives operational information

The Telguard system is not only quick to install compared with hard-wired systems but also extremely flexible. Calls can be answered on cordless telephones making it possible for users to answer entrance requests while going about day to day business or it is possible for a mobile phone to be called for access requests.

We are able to provide systems with backlit keypads and buttons, integrated proximity access and video. The video picture can go to a dedicated monitor or into the communal TV aerial for viewing on any television in the premise.

DDA systems are available with large halo illuminated Braille buttons with big letter, easy to read displays and audio and visual call progress indication.

Bespoke applications are also undertaken making it possible to provide almost any style or shape of system. It may be that we have to provide a system to replace an existing installation so we are able to manufacture our panel to fit the aperture of an old, non functional system.

We are able to manufacture systems in different finishes and colour schemes, we powder coat stainless steel so as to not impact on the vandal resistance of the panel.

As advances in technology arrive in to the public domain, we are always in a position to make the most of these advances thanks to our in-house development team. We are also able to engineer modifications to software and hardware should a specific requirement be requested.

Our systems carry a 2 year return to manufacturer warranty which covers remote product support and system updates. The Warranty can be extended after the initial period.

The ideal system combination for reducing dirt

The 3-zone cleaning system is a proven combination for effectively reducing dirt, which can be adapted to suit the particular conditions of individual buildings. Shopping centres, schools, day nurseries, public offices and all other buildings with high levels of footfall are particularly well suited to this system. 3-zone cleaning reduces cleaning costs and protects adjacent floor coverings and furnishings. The system features non-slip properties and thus prevents accidents from occurring.

Please note: emco clean-off material is only intended for zone 3 and not as a substitute or replacement for zones 1 and/or 2, since its purpose is principally the uptake of fine and damp dirt.

for coarse dirt – zone 1

The exceptional cleaning power of the emco entrance mat system is ensured by the functional inserts integrated into aluminium profiles. Rubber and/ or cassette-brush inserts are particularly effective at removing coarse dirt in  zone 1 of the 3-zone cleaning system. These are robust and weather-proof and can be used both indoors and in unprotected outdoor areas. Furthermore, the insert materials are guaranteed anti-slip.
The system is configured according to the location-specific requirements. The wide range of available mat types, offering different construction heights and material thicknesses, make it possible to provide a personalised solution in terms of dirt-trapping capacity and wear resistance. Systems that are configured for extreme loads can even withstand forklift trucks and vans.

For indoor and covered outdoor areas (fine dirt and moisture – zone 2)

Entrance mats with ribbed carpet inserts integrated into aluminium support chassis are ideal for removing fine dirt in  zone 2 of the 3-zone cleaning system. The robust, weather-proof insert material is certified as having non-slip properties according to assessment grade R11 of DIN 51130 and can be used both indoors and in covered outdoor areas. In particularly dirt-prone areas, a combination of ribbed carpet inserts and rubber inserts or ribbed carpet inserts and cassette brushes can be used.

A wide range of mat types means the configuration can be tailored to the specific requirements of the location in question. For a personalised solution in terms of dirt-trapping capacity and wear resistance, there is a choice of five construction heights and two material thicknesses. When the DIPLOMAT and SENATOR versions are used, the cleaning effectiveness can be enhanced through the incorporation of two additional profile elements.

For damp and residual dirt – zone 3

High-quality clean-off floor coverings are intended for use inside the building and have proved to be particularly effective in the third zone of the 3-zone cleaning system. Special hollow fibres pick up moisture and residual dirt particularly efficiently and trap them inside the floor covering. This ensures the lasting prevention of unattractive foot tracks and of dirt particles being carried in by subsequent visitors.
Clean-off systems can be laid both as throw down mats and as a permanent system over larger surfaces. The comprehensive range of colours and patterns makes it possible to create a design that harmonises both with the entrance mat systems in zones 1 and 2 and with the architecture of the building. Preferences with regard to the reproduction of a personalised pattern within an existing corporate identity or corporate architecture can also be satisfied thanks to innovative production technology. The ability to reproduce the entire range of Pantone colours means that company colours and logos can be exactly replicated.

The 2015 Award, for International Trade, recognises Ancon’s outstanding success in growing sales across new and existing export markets. It follows the company’s previous Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation for its ground-breaking Lockable Dowel, a system that has since revolutionised post-tensioned concrete construction.

The prestigious award, the highest accolade that any UK business can achieve for export growth, was presented to Ancon by the Lord Lieutenant of Clwyd, Mr Henry George Fetherstonhaugh OBE, on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen.

The ceremony at the Deeside facility, the largest and most advanced Wall Tie manufacturing operation in the UK, was attended by 36 employees who proudly watched Ancon’s Export Team Leader, Angela Reeve, accept the ceremonial scroll from the Lord Lieutenant. Her colleague Lynn Forster, Deeside’s Purchasing Manager and longest-serving employee at the site, who has been part of the Ancon team there for the last 32 years, received the commemorative Queen’s Award crystal bowl on behalf of the company.

The Lord Lieutenant said,

“Ancon represents the very best of British innovation and technology, and this dynamic company, which has trebled its exports in the last ten years, has led the way in its field.”

“To win one award is pretty spectacular; to win two awards in three years is absolutely amazing.”

“It is very gratifying to present this award here in Deeside, where Ancon provides 92 much needed jobs and I wish the company every continued success in the future.”

In addition to its headquarters and two manufacturing sites in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Ancon has operated production facilities in North Wales since 1983. The Lord Lieutenant met several employees as he toured the site on Deeside Industrial Park, where the company has been based since 2008 when they outgrew previous sites in Flint and Greenfield.

Speaking after the ceremony, Managing Director, Stuart Maxwell said,

“It’s another very proud day for the Ancon business. We now hold Queen’s Awards for both Innovation and International Trade, confirming that we are successfully combining the development of market-specific solutions with effective worldwide distribution strategies. Our UK-manufactured products are now exported across the globe from the USA, Russia, throughout the far east and into the Asian pacific regions.”

The interior features a number of Perry’s handmade ceramic pots and tapestries that depict the fictional life of Julie which he describes as an ‘Essex Everywoman’.  Visitors pass through a series of unfolding spaces before entering the chapel which is concealed behind two ‘hidden’ doors.  The chapel itself is organised around a striking decorative object, part medieval rood screen, part baroque façade, that frames a ceramic statue of Julie.  Upstairs the two bedrooms, with views to east and west, have walk-through cupboards that lead to internal balconies overlooking the chapel space.  The exterior is clad in more than 1900 green and white ceramic tiles cast from originals made by Perry.

The made-to-order timber Conservation products feature Victorian-style sash windows, with spring balance operation, which are adorned with fixed curved semi-circular fanlights to emphasise height and magnitude.  Coordinating Conservation casement windows and doors feature a contemporary-style moulding.  All products have been finished in purple red, RAL 3004, with a single doorset supplied in yellow.  Triangular casements were also designed and manufactured by Mumford & Wood.  The sliding sash windows are positioned in the gold roof, in pairs of diminishing size, running from front to back of the house.

Conservation windows and doors are made from engineered timber, that provides exceptional strength and stability, to the exacting requirements of the British Woodworking Federation’s Wood Window Alliance standards and are A+ BRE rated.  Double glazed and fully factory-finished they offer the highest levels of thermal and acoustic performance and many products are Secured by Design accredited.  Products carry the BSI Kitemark and are Energy Saving Trust listed.  Mumford & Wood’s Conservation products are delivered to site with three-coats of high quality micro-porous paint or stain as standard.

“These windows and doors are truly glorious but confess we were surprised when the contractor, Rose Builders, showed us the drawings,” says Frank Buckley, managing director, Mumford & Wood Limited.  “Not that design of a bespoke nature is anything new to us, this is where our technical design and manufacturing methods excel; it was more the unexpected colours of purple red and yellow which was colour matched to Little Green Trumpet.  This project makes a grand and striking statement and makes an unusual alternative to today’s trend of white, off-white and heritage colours such as pale grey and duck egg blue and natural stain finishes.  This property is rather like a fairy story, a true work of fiction.”

A House for Essex will be available to rent on a short-term holiday basis and can sleep up to four people in two bedrooms.  Slots are allocated by public ballot which opened in May ’15.
