Windhager has recently provided Taunton and Pickeridge Golf Club with a twin biomass boiler system to reduce its energy costs. The Somerset golf club is run by its members, who jointly made the decision to convert their previous oil heating system to biomass, which resulted in the installation of a Windhager 120kW BioWIN Excel Kaskade system with a 1500 litre AccuWIN accumulator tank. The system was fitted by Somerset and South West based installer, Orin Green Energy, who have much experience of biomass installations and specialist knowledge of Windhager products.

The main objective presented by the golf club was to decrease the amount paid for energy and develop an income stream from the government’s RHI scheme that would benefit development of the club and venue.

Taunton and Pickeridge Golf Club is the highest rated club by Today’s Golfer magazine in the South West and has been host to the PGA National 4BBB Championship qualifying round, along with several county championship competitions. As well as being a traditional 18-hole golf club, the venue also has four multifunction rooms to accommodate conferences and parties, including weddings.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The club has installed two 60kW Windhager BioWIN Excel wood pellet boilers as an environmentally friendly and economic alternative to their previous oil boiler, which was consuming on average 15,000 litres of oil per year. With the cost of oil currently reaching as high as 64p per litre* and wood pellets as little as 4.1p per kWh generated, the club will save a considerable amount of money in energy costs.

The installation qualified for the government’s RHI scheme, which will also generate a significant amount of money in return payments. The scheme offers a repayment of 8.6p per kWh generated which will amount to £12,200 per year for the current energy consumption of the golf club. This, alongside the savings from the reduced energy costs, means that the initial loan to pay for the installation will be paid back within five years, and thereafter will generate an average of £22,600 surplus per year.

Mark Readman, Executive Manager at Taunton and Pickeridge Golf Club commented, “With the future of the club in mind, the low running costs of a biomass boiler system as well as the RHI scheme payments encouraged our decision to convert to biomass boilers.”

The two Windhager BioWIN 60kW Excel biomass boilers were installed in a purpose-built cedar-clad plant room, built by Orin Green Energy, outside the main property. This also housed an integral wood pellet store and 1500 litre AccuWIN accumulator tank to run alongside the existing plumbing and central heating system at the golf club. The BioWIN Excel is particularly suitable for larger properties with demanding heat requirements, such as the golf club, and involves very little maintenance or attention.

The two automatically fed BioWIN Excel wood pellet boilers were specified for the golf club not only for their cost benefits, but also for their operational efficiency all year round. The boilers have been installed in a cascade system enabling them to continue to provide heating to the property during servicing and maintenance without the entire system needing to be shut down. The boilers also have a fully automated operational function allowing them to simply be switched on and left to run.

Mark Readman commented again, “We found the whole process very smooth and seamless, Scott and his team kept us informed throughout every stage. The installation didn’t cause any disruption to the daily running of the club and we were extremely pleased. Since the installation we definitely feel the difference with the new Windhager biomass boilers, which run exceptionally well and we are pleased with our investment. We look forward to the benefits they will bring to the club over future years.”

Architects Pere Martinez and Alexis Noguerol, from J. Noguerol, Interior Design and Architectural Studio, have specified Neolith by TheSize when refurbishing the existing floor of a residential apartment in a hundred-year-old Modernist building. The brand of all-natural, premium sintered compact surfaces proved to be an ideal solution to match the bespoke requirements of the historical building, located in the heart of Eixample in Barcelona, Spain.

The muted tones of Basalt Beige, from the Fusion collection, and Moka, from the Colorfeel collection, have been used in 80m² of the property’s flooring to create a bright and elegant ambience, harmonious with the timeless aesthetic of the building’s modernist style. The transformed rooms include the living room, kitchen, bathrooms, and hallway.

In this instance, the material was cut to create curved lines and floral patterns in order to recreate the organic shape and classical lines typical of the Modernist style featured throughout the apartment. Each part had to be cut to size to suit the different representations on the floor of each room.

To make this possible, sophisticated cutting and machining techniques were employed to ensure that each piece was meticulously placed. The material is lightweight, aiding in the ease in which it can be applied to flooring projects, and offers a resistance that will remain intact over time whether for conventional or bespoke design.

Rich in contemporaneous craft, the requirements of this laborious project highlight the quality of the flooring materials and showcase its influence in turning every room into a distinctive space while integrating seamlessly with the original modernist aesthetic of the building.

Since Neolith can be directly placed on an existing surface, the material is suitable for all types of flooring application. It is scratch and abrasion resistant, non-porous and therefore easy to clean, durable, and features chromatic properties so that its colour does not fade. Available in large sheets as standard (3600x1200mm and 3000x1500mm), the lightweight material can also be cut to meet the bespoke requirements of today’s interior design needs.

With its Portland Stone façade and its classical architecture, Barnsley Town Hall is one of South Yorkshire’s most distinctive landmarks and best loved buildings.

When Barnsley Council commissioned a project to refurbish the roof as part of a programme of improvements to the building, Kemper System not only had to ensure that the roof was upgraded successfully without any disruption to council services but also had to complete the scheme without any impact on the rest of the building.

Explains Victoria Ramwell, technical sales representative of Kemper System: “The project involved installation of a new warm roof system to enhance the thermal performance of the building as well as providing a new waterproofing surface.

“The town hall remained occupied throughout the programme and the building not only involved challenges in terms of the roof build up and complexity but also has delicate features that we had to protect during the works, affecting the way in which the programme was designed.”

To address these challenges, the Stratex warm roof system with Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid waterproofing membrane was specified by Kemper System.  Kemperol 2K-PUR is solvent-free and odourless; ideal for use on occupied buildings where the odours from solvent based or so called low-odour products can be disruptive. Kemperol is also cold applied and therefore can be installed without hot works or the fire risk associated with them.

The existing roof build up consisted of asphalt, followed by a screed and a further layer of asphalt. Barnsley Council were keen to reduce the weight on the roof and so the top two layers had to be removed before installing the new roof.

The remaining asphalt surface varied in condition and a new vapour control layer had to be installed over large areas of the roof surface before installation of Kemper System’s Kempertherm insulation board.  A tapered insulation scheme was chosen to aid with rainwater drainage.

Stuart Hicks, marketing manager from Kemper System explains: “The Stratex system is designed to enable the installer to choose between mechanical or adhesive fixings for the insulation and initially the contractor planned to use mechanical fixings.

“However, it was clear when the installation team started to drill pilot holes that the vibration could cause damage to the internal décor and potentially the ornamental glass dome inside the building. As a result, adhesive was used to fix the insulation.”

As the level of the new insulation was above the lower edge of the glass on the large lantern rooflight, and so as not to interfere with the structure, a drainage channel was created around the roof light and lined with the Kemperol 2K-PUR membrane.

Stuart continues: “The complexity of the roof meant that it would have been extremely difficult to install a new waterproof surface with anything other than a liquid membrane.

“In addition to the roof light, above the internal glass ceiling dome, and the channel we had created around it, we had to contend with a high parapet wall and the outlets that come out of it, numerous skylights, a central plinth and two plant rooms on the roof.”

The Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid system enabled the contractor to install the waterproofing to the exact contours of these roof details and seamlessly incorporated all adjoining areas and drainage channels into a single monolithic membrane. Applied wet-on-wet in a single process, the liquid resin saturates a reinforcement fleece and cures to form a tough, flexible substrate that cannot delaminate. After completing the entire roof, red aggregate surfacing was applied to designated areas to create non-slip maintenance walkways.

“We needed a roof refurbishment that would improve the town hall’s thermal performance and protect against water ingress” comments Tony Taylor from Barnsley Council. “The solution from Kemper System not only answered these requirements but, being sustainably sourced and solvent-free, also conformed to our environmental objectives and ensured that we could carry on using the building as normal without any unpleasant odours or disruption.”

Open-Loop Ground Source Heating can reduce energy bills by more than 50%, help reduce your carbon footprint, is an eligible technology under the RHI and could help reduce water bills – can you afford not to find out more?

ABOUT US

H.D. Services Ltd. Is a small family run company based in Buckinghamshire. We have been constructing water supply and soakaway boreholes and installing our own bespoke designed sewage treatment systems in South East England for over 30 years. In 2009, H.D. Services expanded into the renewable heat market when we identified the link between the water we drill for and the ability to use this water as a heat source for renewable heating. Having partnered with a British based heat pump manufacturing company, we have been installing Open-Loop Ground Source Heat Pumps since 2010.

A fully MCS accredited company, H.D. Services Ltd. aims to provide the highest quality Open-loop Ground Source Heat Pump installations available in South-East England. In 2014 we were awarded a High Commendation at the national Energy Efficiency and Renewables Awards for our work in the South East.

H.D. Services Ltd were approached in 2011 by Acanthus Developments and asked to tender for the installation of three water supply boreholes to serve each of three prestige properties. Closed loop ground source heating was being considered, however the availability of a reliable ground water supply from the chalk aquifer resulted in the installation of three open-loop heat pumps. The development went on to win a Green Apple award in recognition of the Sustainable Nature of the development and the Architectural Design Excellence of the properties.

Using the postcode of the site to assess the hydro-geology, a quotation was submitted for the construction of both the water supply borehole and soak away at each location. The deal was that both the water supply borehole and soakaway were constructed and water pumped from one to the other to prove the worthiness of both before and payment was requested. It was several months later, once the construction of the properties had been completed that the heat pumps could be installed and commissioned. Each installation is covered by a 5 year workmanship warranty and annual maintenance contracts have been offered.

The boreholes were drilled using a cable-percussion rig – the method preferred by the Environment Agency when drilling into the chalk aquifer. Borehole logs were submitted to both the British Geological Survey and Environment Agency to protect the abstractions from derogation by a third party.

From the experience gained on the contract, plumbing and electrical guides were designed and are handed to the client for distribution to their contractor. These have been written by a fully qualified professional and in conjunction with the heat pump manufacturer. They inform the heating distribution system installers of both the plumbing requirements and the electrical requirements of the heat pump. This ensures that while work is continuing on the build, those on site have the information to hand regarding system requirements which provides confidence that all required connections are in the correct location making the installation and commissioning of the heat pump a straightforward process.

Work was completed in late 2012 and all three of the heat pump installations were commissioned successfully.

Due to the nature of the development, only one of the properties was considered eligible for the dRHI as the client now resides there. Although the other two properties are technically RHI eligible in that they have been installed with the RHI in mind and are MCS compliant, as they were built for resale they are rightly deemed ineligible for the incentive.

IKO has introduced a range of spray-applied PU bonding adhesives specifically developed to offer fast-track, effective bonding of both insulation boards and polymeric membranes. The introduction of a new canister application system, enables IKOpro Sprayfast to be applied quickly and accurately.  The controlled bead size function eliminates waste ensuring economical coverage rates, whilst the 3-meter long spray hose applicator ensures that operatives work in an upright position to reduce discomfort.

IKO has produced three different formulas to suit a range of applications, from installing insulation boards and VCL’s to single ply polymeric membranes.

Insulation boards

IKOpro Sprayfast IBA moisture-curing polyurethane adhesive can be applied faster and more accurately than standard hand-poured PU adhesives and benefits from rapid cure times.

Fleece-Backed Roofing Membranes

This Sprayfast system can be applied four times faster than standard roller-applied PU adhesives and has a cover rate of up to 180m2 per canister.

IKOpro Sprayfast FMA is suitable for both large-scale fieldwork as well as detailing. Excellent bond and wind uplift resistance, independently tested by the BRE, means that it can be relied upon to securely bond fleece-backed membranes.

IKOpro Sprayfast FMA performs in a wide range of temperatures (-30°C – 150°C) and has exceptional long-term ageing properties. The non-foaming adhesive allows a truly flat lamination and so produces an aesthetically pleasing finish.

PVC Roofing Membranes

This multi-purpose polyurethane two-way stick adhesive enables simple and secure bonding of non-backed PVC roofing membranes to a wide range of substrates.  It can be applied twice as fast as standard one-way stick roller applied adhesive, covering one metre square of membrane in as little as 40 seconds, curing in just 30 minutes.

In each case, the canister contains non-flammable gas, which can make the product much easier to store onsite in compliance with ADR regulations.

The Magnum Poly Insert Spreader sits neatly on the back of a three-quarter or one ton pick-up and effortlessly deals with the issue of spreading salt when ice and snow is expected.  The spreader’s unique design has been created to allow easy access and maintenance.

The spreader has a capacity of 1.14m3 -1.52 m3 and has been designed for simplicity of use. Excellent features include:

  • Hopper design eliminating the use of steel cages to hold the hopper upright providing a non rusting solution and increased stability
  • A concealed motor spinner department which keeps salt out
  • Low friction poly bearings equalling no maintenance
  • An easily-removed (without tools) auger and a rear cover protecting the auger motor from salt
  • Out of season it can be stored upright to save valuable space
  • Recessed lifting pockets make installation and removal an easier process
  • The full width hopper reduces spillage into the vehicle bed and built-in tarpaulin hooks make covering and uncovering simple

It will be available in various sizes and models and will appeal to contractors who need to respond quickly and efficiently to changes in the weather.

DMMP managing director Marcus Palmer is enthusiastic about the new spreader: “We are thrilled to be launching the new Magnum insert spreader range.  We’re really impressed with it and believe that it will make light work of the tough seasonal task of ice and snow management, which many organisations will face in the coming months.”
