Shutters: The most energy efficient window dressing for your home

Window shutters are the perfect dressing solution for great looking interiors and to make any home as energy efficient as possible to help save money on your bills.

Shutters are an ideal addition for any home and have long been a favourite for London properties. The appeal of shutters isn’t just their great look though, they also have a long list of benefits that make shutters the ideal option for any home.

Installing shutters to windows can help to save money on bills because the additional insulating layer on the window reduces the requirement for heating and air conditioning provided the shutters are operated in the most efficient manner.

In summer months, using the reflective qualities of shutters helps to ensure that rooms remain cool. White shutters are the most effective colour choice for this because white is a natural reflector for solar radiation. In the heat of the day, if the shutter panels and slats remain closed, along with windows closed to stop hot are coming through into the room, rays are reflected away from the space and stop rooms getting too hot. This reduces the need for air conditioning units to cool down the space. Slats do not need to be fully closed for this effect to take place so where natural light is still desired, a slight tilt at the right angle will still allow some light to shine through whilst assisting to keep the area cool without being completely darkened.

In winter months, opening the shutter panels and louvres during the day helps to warm the room up by allowing solar rays into the space. This also reduces the need for artificial lighting in the home because light bounces off the slats onto the ceiling to brighten the whole room. By closing panels and slats when it gets dark outside, heat that has been produced during sunlight hours will be trapped and the need for heating reduced or eliminated.

Because of their year-round effectiveness, shutters are a self-financing window dressing thanks to their ability to reduce overall household bills. Shutters also increase the value of a property so by making the investment to add these to a window, homeowners are also making an investment to a possible future increase in value of their home.

There are many different shutter styles and materials that can be selected to suit any window and client depending on their needs. The most luxurious of these options is Pearlwood which is a brilliant full wood option. For the whole of October, Plantation Shutters are offering Pearlwood at a fantastic 20% off which means that these wonderful luxury shutters are available at an unparalleled cost.
