Stay ahead of the curve with an innovative geodesic dome

Durable, striking and unique, the SOLARDOME® PRO system offers unparalleled innovation in the design and manufacture of awe-inspiring geodesic dome structures, ideal for a range of applications. Read on to discover your design solution.

Inspiration and innovation

As an established world leader in the design and manufacture of glass-clad aluminium geodesic domes, Solardome Industries understands all too well the need for finding architectural inspiration. That’s why we have developed our innovative SOLARDOME® PRO to extend our existing portfolio of glasshouses.

With this patent-pending architectural system we can create scalable geodesic domes up to 25 metres in diameter using a bespoke design service. This means that a dome can be clad with any type of material and incorporate single glazed, double glazed and insulated panels depending on your or your client’s requirements and application. There is also scope to include extra floors, internal rooms and even specify the height and profile of the dome.

Plus, unlike many other geodesic domes – that use wooden frames – our domes are built using aluminium frames, so you get high performance, low maintenance and quality guaranteed.

When a vision becomes reality

The beauty of a SOLARDOME® PRO geodesic dome lies not only within its strength and striking appearance, but also its ability to help you or your client achieve a very specific architectural vision.

Here are some examples of how we’ve worked together with clients to achieve truly forward-thinking, striking and memorable designs.

2

Watford Grammar School for Girls (WGSFG), Hertfordshire – dome building

Standing out as a landmark feature that grabs the attention of students, staff and visitors alike, the dome at WGSFG was commissioned to inspire students to study sciences through A-level and beyond.

The 21st century rooftop science lab is fully equipped with laboratory workstations for group work and is made of a combination of grey insulated panels and blue tinted double glazing to match the school’s design. Fitted with two doorways – for easy flow to the science garden – and an electric air source heat pump, it can be heated and cooled, making it a timetabled lab for all year round.

3

The Nature House, North Norway – glass dome

This 15 metre diameter, 7.5 metre tall, self-built geodesic dome covers Benjamin & Ingrid Hjertefolger’s COB house and gardens on their 7000m2 remote island near Bodo, in the Arctic Circle. The glass dome acts as a greenhouse microclimate enabling the Hjertefolgers to grow a vast abundance of plants and produce to help create a self-sustainable way of life; something that is not normally possible in the extreme Northern European climate.

The robust and beautiful dome also:

  • protects the house and gardens from the extreme wind and snow loading of the region
  • has dramatically reduced the Hjertefolger’s heating bills
  • provides an environmentally friendly way of maintaining a uniform temperature throughout the year
  • reduces ultraviolet radiation
  • minimises building maintenance

By choosing a SOLARDOME® PRO geodesic dome the Hjertefolger’s lifelong dream of creating a sustainable, self-contained environment has become a reality, despite the adverse weather conditions of the region.

4

Kristall Salz Welt (Crystal Salt World), Austria – skylight

Architecturally striking and covering the atrium of Kristall Salz Welt – a unique 12-sided, 8.3 metre tall building that houses natural spas – this 9.3 metre diameter low profile SOLARDOME® PRO skylight provides an abundance of natural daylight and ventilation.

The skylight connects the spa’s visitors to the outside environment on the shore of Lake Attersee, providing an ever changing canvas of the sky; whether it’s bright blue, grey and stormy, or a starry night. This closeness to nature is fundamental to the building’s design and fulfils Kristall Salz Welt’s wellbeing vision. It perfectly complements the building’s walls, floors and seats, which all use the qualities of the salt to create a natural environment that has been shown to be beneficial to the human body.

Other idea concepts

There are so many ways for you or your client to use a SOLARDOME® PRO. Here are a few other functions you could employ:

  • Hotel and leisure facilities
  • Theatres/halls
  • Self-build houses
  • Outdoor classrooms for schools
  • Visitor attractions
