Mitsubishi Electric has welcomed the publication by the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) of a national water source heat map, which highlights the significant opportunities that exist for open water heat pump installations across the country.

The Department was tasked with the preparation of the map by Rt Hon Edward Davey MP, the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, when he formally switched on the award-winning Kingston Heights Open Water Heat Pump community heating system in October last year.

The pioneering £70 million, mixed-use development in the heart of Kingston-upon-Thames in Surrey harvests renewable, low grade heat from the Thames and transfers it 200 metres from the river to the development’s 137 apartments and 142 bed hotel and conference centre where it is utilised to provide all the development’s heating, hot water and cooling requirements.

Here Mitsubishi Electric’s advanced heat pump technology boosts the low grade heat provided by solar energy naturally stored in the river (and every open body of water) to the temperature required to provide all the heating and hot water for the flats and the hotel (as well as providing the cooling requirement for the individual hotel rooms).

The adoption of this system means the production of 2.3 megawatts of thermal energy with Zero Carbon emissions on site and with outstanding energy efficiency projected to provide Coefficients of Performance of 4-6+. Electricity required to run the system is provided by Ecotricity’s wind turbines, making the entire installation Zero Carbon.

“I always knew that what we were doing in Kingston could be easily replicated and I was delighted when the Secretary of State and his officers at DECC decided to map out the potential for the country”, explains Mike Spenser-Morris, managing director of NHP Leisure Developments and the visionary behind the scheme.

“Kingston Heights points the way to the use of the virtually unlimited store of solar energy which is lying dormant in the heart of our towns and cities” adds Spenser-Morris, who has set up The Zero Carbon Partnership to assist other potential adopters of the technology by sharing the extensive experience gained from the Kingston Heights project.

The ‘Water Source Heat Map’ produced by DECC is the result of a high level assessment of around 40 urban rivers with the greatest potential for water source heat pump deployment. The map, published on 11 August 2014 does this by identifying areas of high heat demand, adjacent to rivers with sufficiently high flow rates. It also highlights locations sensitive to environmental factors.

“This map helps raise awareness of the untapped potential for renewable heat that already runs through many of our communities”, adds John Kellett, general manager for Mitsubishi Electric’s Heating Systems.

Further details on the map, including the context and rationale behind it can be found at the following website: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/water-source-heat-map.

Innovative products that challenge traditional under floor heating systems.

The Varme Heat Pak and Carbon System for use under wood, vinyl and carpet flooring, brought to you by Floor Heating Systems Ltd, avoids the mess and setting time associated with traditional tile adhesives and levelling compounds.

The launch of The Varme Heat Pak and Carbon System is a milestone in the underfloor heating industry because it completely transforms the way underfloor heating is installed, the waiting times endured by contractors, and the delays associated with drying times.

This underfloor heating system is approved by CE & BEAB and proves beneficial for a huge range of projects.

The Varme film carbon heating elements are composed using a uniformed carbon coating over a polyester film. Electrical energy is brought into the film from factory connected ‘cold’ cable leads, which connect to the copper strips and here, it is transformed without loss into thermal energy.

VARME Logo

Available in two power outputs, 130 watts per m² and 160 watts per m², the carbon heating film system can be suitable for primary heating in most cases, this is dependent on the size of the room and insulation properties. The system can be controlled by one of our wide range of thermostats from a simple manual dial type to the a full Wifi multi network system that works from a smart phone.

For more information, please visit www.varmefhs.co.uk or call us on 01159834259The Varme Heat Pak and Carbon System is a high quality product that provides a completely hassle-free installation, and we are very impressed with the great response we have received so far.

When Security Access Systems were asked to install a new barrier system for one of their long standing clients, there was one clear choice in the market place, that would withstand the Sun, Sea and Sand, that any Security equipment installed on the prestigious holiday park in Abersoch, North Wales would have to withstand for years to come; the FAAC B680.

This new installation by Security Access Systems replaced a barrier system which had been in use on the site for several years; over that time, the barrier cabinet itself eventually rusted through, due to having experienced high winds and salty conditions, for many years.

The FAAC B680 was recommended by Security Access Systems, due to its robust nature of manufacture, the availability of several finishes and the fact that they were able to offer their clients the option of replacing the cabinet, so that when the outer casing is effected by the elements, damaged or is subject to vandalism, the casing can be replaced, ensuring that a superior finish is maintained, without the need to replace the mechanics of the barrier.

Sue Keelagher, Director of Security Access Systems commented; “The B680 particularly stood out to us as the obvious choice, given that LED lights can be installed on the unit housing and along the five metre beam, adding additional safety elements to the install, given the low lighting conditions, along with the standard safety devices, and the compatibility with the existing access control system. While, the ability to update the cabinet ensures the barrier remains aesthetically pleasing for years to come.”

Mrs G. Eyton‐Jones from Bryn Cethin Bach Caravan Park, Abersoch, commented “We are delighted with our new FAAC barrier, which has been installed by Security Access Systems. The lighting, appearance and reliability has proved a great success with ourselves and customers.

Warmup, the world’s best-selling underfloor heating brand, have recently launched a new design for their website in the UK at www.warmup.co.uk. The website offers first class user experience where exceptional usability, content and services are combined in one place. The new design accompanies other changes such as upgraded content, more targeted tools and improved quoting system. Available for projects of all sizes, the user is guided through 3 easy steps when getting a quote for underfloor heating. Based on the details, Warmup advises on the best system for the project and for projects over 50m², a project manager is assigned to advise on a bespoke solution.

Technical data, installation advice and live support

Specifiers find technical data and specification sheets for all products in both wet and electric underfloor heating ranges as well as the possibility to submit floor plans with their quote request for a completely bespoke solution, with installation inclusive cost information.

Trade professionals can utilise the detailed installation advice and manuals alongside online live chat and telephone support. The support serves architects/specifiers, electricians, installers and consumers on any questions they may have before, during and after installation.

Warmup insights -Product selector, blog, FAQ and videos

The product selector is designed to give advice on the best system. Especially suitable for smaller projects, the tool guides users through few simple steps to identify the best system for their project. The Timber Decking and Cladding Association (TDCA) is offering a material sourcing service where it will contact potential suppliers on your behalf to generate a list of those willing and able to meet your specific needs for individual projects.   This and designing for durability are common themes in the daily stream of enquiries received by the TDCA.

In response, the organisation is urging specifiers and users of timber to tighten up on specifications by detailing the durability required in line with relevant standards, particularly for support structures as these can be overlooked.

Broadly speaking you have a choice to design to 15, 30 or 60 year desired service life for external timbers; 15 being the default for decking and 30 years for cladding.  The service life is achieved through good design detail coupled with selecting materials of the right quality.

Sourcing accredited materials will help in the pursuit of acquiring durable products; DeckMarkTM and CladMarkTM are the quality accreditation schemes operated by TDCA for its members.

With pressure treated timber, the TDCA stresses the importance of obtaining evidence of treatment which includes confirmation of the standard of treatment and the conferred desired service life.  All too often timber is put in place without any inkling of whether or not it meets requirements.   Likewise evidence to support the durability claims of any material should always be requested.

A common misunderstanding relates to natural durability; durability classes apply to heartwood only; put simply heartwood comes from the central core of the tree whilst the sapwood is from the periphery or the outer section of the tree.  The sapwood of all species is non durable and should either be enhanced by a suitable means or excluded (suitable means includes pressure impregnation with preservative or wood modification).

TDCA online resources covering this and other subjects are designed to help specifiers, designers and installers alike to design for durability.  There you will find technical help and publications free to download and if you can’t find what you need, you can use the association’s enquiry service.

The all-new January Furniture Show (Tuesday 13 – Thursday 15 January 2015) at Birmingham’s NEC is set to be even bigger following its expansion into a fifth hall, The Pavilion, adjacent to Hall 1. The Pavilion adds a further 3,000sqm of exhibitor space and will hold an additional 30 stands along with a British themed restaurant designed by Ian Christopher.

The news is just one of a string of exciting developments announced by organisers Furniture Fairs: MP for Stevenage, Stephen McPartland will officially open what will be the 25th consecutive furniture show to be held at the NEC; former NEC venue sales director Stephen Richards has been appointed as a third director alongside Theresa Raymond and Laraine Janes; and the team has been further strengthened with the appointment of Natalie Slade as events manager.

Supported by many of the furnishing sector’s biggest and best known names, the new look January Furniture Show has been enthusiastically welcomed across the industry.

Said Theresa Raymond: “We have been delighted by the response to, and in support of, the show and now have a 10-strong team working hard to meet exhibitors’ and visitors’ requirements.

“As a direct result of the success so far, a tenancy agreement has now been signed for the next three years. The show brings buyers and exhibitors together at the perfect time for planning and ordering for the year – and 25 years of success at the NEC is evidence that this is the venue and timing the trade want for their show.”

The January Furniture Show 2015 will run midweek from Tuesday January 13 to Thursday 15 and be located in Halls 1-3 and The Pavilion. The 2016 show will run for three days from Sunday 24 – Tuesday 26 January.

Metrotile is Europes number one stone-coated lightweight steel roofing system that, beneath the stunning aesthetics, offers more benefits than so-called traditional roofing materials.

Many of these benefits stem from each tile profile’s low weight. Weighing up to one seventh of comparable roof materials, a Metrotile roof offers benefits from significantly reduced transportation to site, rapid installation and easy storage on site. Furthermore, an installed Metrotile roof is extremely secure, as the dual-fix installation method prevents both damage vandalism and extreme weather – Metrotile has been cyclone tested in Japan and wind tested in California. The icing on the cake is that Metrotile roofing comes with an astounding forty year weatherproof guarantee, hence our tagline “The Future Proof Roof”.

The many benefits of Metrotile has seen the product appear on projects from new build homes and schools, to local authority and Housing Association refurbishments (usually to help old properties attain government standards). Metrotile has also seen a boom in the conservatory industry and is used as both a roof for brand new installations and as the tile of choice for solid roof conversions.

Metrotile Lightweight Roofing systems are backed up by a full range of accessories, from underlay to ridges and from Velux windows to an integrated Photovoltaic system that enables you to harness home energy from natural light. Metrotile is the one stop required for your roofing needs.

Metrotile backs up it’s product line with the expertise of its customer service team who are always happy to assist at any stage of your building project. Furthermore, Metrotile launched a new website at the start of this year that features a new series of video installation guides.

“Help!’ was the cry from an elderly couple from St. Mary’s Tower, London.   My wife broke her arm and cannot get out of the Flat!”

Working to a standard is often scrutinised and despised by the other parties as lives at risk are brought into focus.

On arrival the Client (who shall be unnamed) were encouraged to see us and demonstrated their problems with extreme excitement and graphic presentation.

George K with his customer relations etiquette handled the situation very well and took the heat out of the situation.  With understanding and technical knowledge the Rutland Team entered with care and respect – this is Mr and Mrs C’s house after all!

Identification

A survey soon told us where the problems were.  It was a high quality door and frame with very substantial hardware and a DDA door closer, very nicely fitted and there shouldn’t be any reason why there is problem with this situation.

The door closer was removed to show the client what the door is like without it.  The rubber blade seals were doing such a fantastic job that it took all of 107.2 Nm to pull the door open!

With adjustments to the door and refitting of the door closer the Nm pressure to pull or push the door was reduced drastically to a comfortable amount.

“That’s what I call a proper fire door with a quality closer”  “Shut’s with a click”

P C Henderson’s sliding and folding door hardware can offer vital added privacy and flexible layouts to improve inter-generational homes. With a record amount of grown-up children living at home and a rise in two or three family generations living under one roof, the National House Building Council (NHBC) predicts houses will be built and adapted to suit the surge of ‘co-homers’.

With expensive care for the elderly and children, and many struggling to get on the property ladder, families are pooling their funds to afford much larger homes and share the space. The Ideal Home Show census learnt that 4 per cent of the population, 728,000 people, now live in homes with two other generations – a higher rate than in the Victorian era.

Andrew Royle, UK Commercial Director at P C Henderson, comments on the growing trend: “There are benefits to sharing homes with loved ones such as economical advantages and also convenient care for the elderly or children. However, living together permanently can have some disadvantages when it comes to privacy and respecting each other’s space. P C Henderson’s sliding and folding door hardware can help by providing privacy screens and versatile layouts. Optional closed areas can be created with a sliding or folding door system for relaxation, or the door can be folded back or concealed to create open plan areas for socialising.”

According to the Halifax monthly price index, house prices have risen up by £17,261 in the last year. In addition, a report from the Post Office shows the average house size has halved by 700 square feet in the last century, further showing the challenge to find affordable living space. By using sliding door gear systems floor space is created in a home in contrast to a swing door which impacts on the room once opened.  In a house with ten 3ft internal doors, up to an additional 70sq ft of usable space can be released in the home by eliminating the room needed for it to swing and function.

Furthermore, the NHBC predicts that the familiar ‘granny annexe’ could evolve into co-homes with shared kitchens yet separate bathrooms and front doors. P C Henderson’s range of sliding and folding door gear hardware can provide space saving, versatile solutions for any layout and aesthetic.

The PanelGrip® Balustrade System from F H Brundle changes the rules of glass balustrading, utilising a unique high performance clamping mechanism combined with a patented Shoe Moulding.

The major advantage of PanelGrip

  • Reduction in labour time when installing a structural Glass Railing System
  • Easily adjusted and readjusted during installation
  • No multiple pours of cement
  • No special tools required

The clamping system also self-centres the glass and, as you only need to tighten from one side, this is a major advantage for working at height.  Re-adjustment or glass removal at a later date can be performed by simply loosening the PanelGrip locking mechanism.
