“No matter the project, keeping a consistent flow of high quality drinking water is vital in order to ensure the comfort and convenience of a building’s occupants. Regardless of whether you’re starting from scratch, renovating or refurbishing, installing a Vivreau drinking water system makes this a simple task to undertake.

The Vivreau LinkLine system offers a unique solution where a solitary, compact unit is installed in a plant room area and can service individual tea points with purified chilled still, sparkling or even instant boiling hot water over numerous floors .  This eliminates the  need to install separate refrigeration technology at various locations around the building – which can not only be detrimental to expenditure on a new building, but also these units can appear cumbersome and detract from high quality finishes

A system like LinkLine can make newly built or refurbished buildings all that more appealing in an aesthetic, economical and environmental sense. Utilising the LinkLine system to distribute water to numerous Vi Tap outlets across multiple floors, architects are able to provide a service that’s 45% more cost effective than installing multiple individual units, whilst also being up to  55% more energy efficient, and attractive to boot.

Designed to continuously re-circulate the water around the pipes, freshness is guaranteed on every floor. And, with the LinkLine’s unique Control Management System (CMS), the performance of the LinkLine’s Master Control Unit (MCU) is monitored, as well as the flow and dispense of water at various outlets throughout the building.

It ensures optimum performance of the system particularly as each MCU controls multiple drinking water dispense points in one building. It is also used as an aid to the onside technical/vending team to monitor the performance of the system enabling immediate action to be taken if required.

Featuring high performance Ice Bank refrigeration technology, which is capable of delivering very high volumes of chilled water, LinkLine offers a range of additional benefits including a power saving option to reduce electricity consumption and anti-flood detection system.”

The established Vision Trimline range from Percy Doughty has been designed with the specific purpose of recreating the desire to use a fireplace as the central focal point of our living space.

The innovative fires are skilfully engineered to allow a true trimless aspect.  This means no distracting frames or visible mechanical workings – just fire.  Furthermore, meticulous attention has been paid to the realisation of the fuel bed and flame patterns to ensure a perfect recreation of a natural, living fire.

One of the most innovative aspects of all Vision Trimline fires is that there is no need for an existing chimney to be present which makes them both highly efficient and a safe appliance.   This is all down to the clever features of our balanced flue system.   All Vision Trimline fires use a specialised double wall concentric flue system.  The THC-CC system is an obligatory and integral part of the complete combustion system and must be used when installing the fire.

A wide range of flue and chimney components allows for easy installation enabling the fires to be positioned in virtually any part of the home with a relatively simple ‘chimney column’ built around it.  This may be a typically styled chimney breast positioned against a wall, or a floating pillar in the centre of the room.

Every Vision Trimline fire comes complete with ‘included extras’ to help make the purchase as straight forward and simple as possible!

As standard, all fires come complete with:

  • Ecomax remote control – this sleek designed handset features thermostatic control, countdown timer to automatically turn off the fire, and an Ecomax button, allowing random high-low adjustment of the flames to regulate room temperature resulting  in 40% energy saving.
  • Adjustable legs – allowing you to easily install the fire at your desired height without the need for further, unnecessary building work.
  • Control access door – a neat, gloss finish, access system to allow access to the manual fire controls.
  • Convection vents – two of these are supplied with each fire to allow convected hot air from the chimney into your room.

This year has seen significant investment with the introduction of the innovative double burner* feature.  The clever double burner feature staggers the flame pattern in two rows and gives an extra sense of depth and realism whilst offering a more economical way to use your fire.  At the touch of a button the front burner row remains active whilst the rear burner row diminishes, giving unparalleled visual effect with a reduction of 40% of the heat output.  Used in combination with the Ecomax remote control can result in the benefit of reduced running costs of up to 60%.

What’s more we’ve teamed up with Capital, Heat Design, MAC and tiletec offering full UK and Ireland distribution.  For more details on our Trimline range please contact our sales office on 01204 868 550 email us at sales@percydoughty.com or  visit our newly redeveloped website at www.visionfires.co.uk

As widely reported, the recession caused a vast fall in the demand for bricks, resulting in many kilns ceasing to manufacture and bricklayers having to find alternative employment. As the industry emerged from the downturn, in 2014, it became clear that housebuilders were challenged by two major factors – a shortage of materials and traditional labour skills.

Although many businesses grappled to find the best way forward, Alumasc Facade Systems turned this situation into an opportunity by developing a new and innovative facade technology designed specifically for the offsite structural timber sector – the Alumasc Ventilated System (AVS).

The initial product development remit was to design a ventilated system that would replicate traditional building aesthetics, whilst providing a lightweight solution that could be fixed directly to structural timber systems. Alumasc’s main goal was to ensure the system was engineered to deliver structural stability across all applications whilst providing adaptability to all forms of structural timber construction.

This innovative, engineered system provides the solution to overcome the fundamental issues of the brick shortages. AVS, as an offsite manufactured system, improves efficiency and speed of construction, addresses skills shortages and enhances the quality of finish, whilst delivering the final aesthetics to meet the exacting requirements of architects, designers and housebuilders.

The product offers specifiers a ventilated cladding solution for timber frame construction, together with volumetric modular and structurally insulated panel systems (SIPS). It protects the fabric of the building whilst providing a wide choice of aesthetic options. The system accommodates a range of cavity depths – the free-flowing system ensures that the substrate remains continuously ventilated and prevents any moisture tracking back to the primary structure, removing condensation – providing a protective facade.

Offering an alternative method of construction, AVS can replicate any brick in the market via patented, lightweight acrylic brick slips. The system is not just limited to using acrylic brick slips as the final facade finish – it is also approved for use with textures, through-coloured silicone renders, along with an extensive range of dashing renders.

AVS is erected via Alumasc’s network of registered installers to ensure correct application onsite. The AVS installer training programme is independantly assessed and approved by the BBA. AVS comes with a 10 year warranty offer for all projects installed by an Alumasc registered contractor.

Technical Approval

The AVS system has been rigorously tested, resulting in compliance with all UK Building Regulations and became British Board of Agrément approved (Cert No: 15/5211) in May 2015. It is the only ventilated system in the UK to be BBA certified with an external acrylic brick slip finish and offers an industry-leading A2 rating, providing the building with improved fire performance when compared to other cladding solutions.

During the development of the system, Alumasc worked very closely with a number of companies and bodies to ensure AVS would meet the demands of the offsite and onsite construction industry, whilst providing optimum performance and longevity. These organisations include CCG, Exova Fire Research, Warrington (fire testing); Lucideon (UKAS accredited testing body); Pell Frishmann (Consultant Engineers) and the British Board of Agrément.

AVS is the solution to overcome current construction industry skills issues and is well-positioned to be part of the building technology of the future.

Advanced Facade Solution for Structural Timber Construction

Taking its name from the historic use of the adjacent canal – Alumasc supplied their Alumasc Ventilated System to the Timber Basin in Panmure Street. This project will provide 108 new homes for Queens Cross Housing Association. The mixed use residential scheme incorporates social housing and shared equity homes for first-time buyers. Panmure Street includes numerous building types from two and three bedroom town houses to five and even eight storey apartment blocks.

The Panmure Street development in Glasgow demonstrates the benefits and versatility of using the Alumasc Ventilated System (AVS). On this scheme a closed panel, fully offsite manufactured solution was delivered, with only a small element of external onsite fabric work required.

CCG – who have recently invested over £12m in a state-of-the-art factory, were the main contractor and offsite manufacturer on the scheme, installing AVS with a lightweight acrylic brick slip finish.

AVS offers an alternative approach to traditional build, particularly for new build timber framed housing. It provides an engineered, stylish facade solution, with the option of utilising modern offsite construction techniques. Due to the system’s free flowing cavity, it remains both continuously ventilated and drained whilst maintaining detailing true to traditional build expectations. This ensures the timber substrate sustains its ventilation requirements, removing condensation and preventing moisture tracking back to the building fabric, providing a protected structure. AVS is approved for use with acrylic brick slips, silicone render and dashing render.

Paul Muldoon, Contracts Manager for CCG said: “The Panmure project is

one of the largest projects using closed panel technology to be manufactured offsite in our new factory. Due to the design of the Alumasc Ventilated System we were able to apply 75% of the brick slips offsite therefore the usual challenges such as transport logistics, site access problems and weather did not impact on the project.”

The key driver for the specification of AVS was its ability to replicate traditional construction design whilst being adaptable for the closed panel production line.

AVS is quick and easy to install and can be produced in factory controlled conditions, enhancing quality and minimising onsite waste whilst offering a rapid and reliable build programme, not effected by adverse weather conditions.

Alastair Wylie, Group Chairman and Chief Executive of CCG commented: “The Alumasc Ventilated System for timber frame provides a significant advancement in the concept of Modern Methods of Construction and furthermore relieves the pressure upon skill and material shortages.”

The last ten to twelve years has seen the emergence and increasing usage of single deck, direct to joist acoustically insulating floor boards.

These boards normally consist of 22mm flooring grade chipboard bonded to a resilient layer which provides the acoustically separating bearing onto the joists. This type of product is relatively easy to install and, by performing the normal structural functions as well as tentatively achieving the Approved Document E acoustic requirements for the change of use “refurbishment” at least, they present an attractive proposition.

Screen-Shot-2016-01-14-at-14.39.50

Thermal Economics has recently developed and launched the Isosonic Dek 30 board for this application and in the process carried out a series of laboratory and field acoustic tests, which provide a very strong indication that given the fairly normal conditions of;

•200mm deep joints at 400/500mm centres.
•Masonry flanking walls.
•19.6kg/m2 double plasterboard (fire resistant) acoustically decoupled ceiling.

the floor deck itself requires a mass of at least 21 – 22Kg/m2 in order to consistently meet the ADE minimum 43dB (DnTw+ctr) airborne sound transmission requirement.

Screen-Shot-2016-01-14-at-14.40.15

Timber floors are generically problematic in resisting airborne sound transmission due to their lack of mass. It is worth reflecting that prior to the event of the “single deck” systems the common construction which was deemed to meet the then (lower) acoustic requirements consisted of;

•18mm (min) chipboard or planks over the joists.
•resilient layer.
•Floating 18mm chipboard deck or similar.

Which together weighed 20 – 25Kgm2 and was substantially heavier than 22mm chipboard with a PE or PUR expanded foam backing weighing 16 – 17Kg/m2.

In the case of Isosonic Dek 30 the resilient layer consists of 8mm Isorubber with a density of 910Kg/m3, giving a total board weight of 22.3Kg/m2.

The tested versus actual under load and the long term (aged) impact sound absorption performance of light weight PE and PUR foams could also bear some scrutiny.

Screen-Shot-2016-01-14-at-14.40.26Screen-Shot-2016-01-14-at-14.40.32

Solid PE and PUR have densities of between 1000 – 1200Kg/m3, which means that the typically employed expanded foam of 35Kg/m3 density must be around 97% air/gas by volume; which, over a period of time and under load

will defuse / deflate. This compaction leads to a loss of resilience; the ability to absorb impact sound energy.

Isorubber on the other hand is a very dense material with excellent energy absorption properties but undergoes no effective short term compression. This means that ” what you test is what you get” for the designed life span of the building.

Considering then that a domestic floor can be subjected to imposed loads in excess of 200Kg/m2 including partitions, and also that acoustic tests are inevitably carried out in the unloaded state, the question should be asked if the tests are truly representative of the real in use performance.

In conclusion; it is always worth scrutinising test data to ensure that it truly represents performance in actual usage and that it will last for the expected duration of the usage.

It is worth noting that in the case of thermal insulation, aged thermal resistance values have long been a standard requirement, but strangely acoustic standards have not yet progressed to this stage.

Incom Systems is a Communication Specialist company based in West Yorkshire providing services nationally. They have over 25 years of supplying, installing and maintaining specialist equipment that keeps people safe and secure in a variety of caring and nursing environments.

Incom Systems has built their business and reputation on providing bespoke life safety and security solutions to a wide range of premises including care homes, nursing homes, supported housing and extra care accommodation. They can install and maintain both hard wired and radio nurse call systems, and provide either a comprehensive or reactive maintenance contract ensuring you have emergency cover 24/7 365 days per year. These systems can be purchased outright or they can also offer a competitive leasing package.

Following the introduction of the Care Act 2014 all housing providers now have an essential role to play in the safeguarding of people with care or support needs. Care home providers also need to continually demonstrate that they protecting their residents as part of their Care Quality Commission registration. By using cutting edge technology it is possible to safeguard, and minimise risk of abuse or harm to residents within a care home environment.

Installing a call system in your care home will assist your residents to be as independent as possible with the reassurance that they can call for assistance if required, whilst providing family members with the peace of mind that they demand.

Today’s work environment in a care home is changeable, demanding and fast paced. Productivity and risk management are becoming more dependent on effective communications between colleagues, managers and residents. A robust and reliable on-site or off-site mobility solution can be the key to increasing productivity by helping staff to be more effective in their work, and providing them with the tools they need to do their jobs. So whether you require an individual telephone system or a multi user telephone network, Incom Systems can provide you with the solution to your communications needs by utilising the latest in VoIP and DECT technology.

All care homes have assets that need to be protected from theft or burglary. There is also the issue of protecting the personal property of residents and staff. It is common that buildings that are secured by locks and keys often have their doors left unlocked all day. This opens up the possibility of opportunist theft and malicious damage.

Electronic access control provides the most efficient and convenient way of securing your building and assets, controlling who has access to your care home and when that access is allowed. Once an access control system is installed any door will lock on closure. Anyone without an access token or an identification card is unable to enter the care home or designated area. If necessary, doors may be set to unlock during a designated time frame or in an emergency.

By using staff attack you can protect your staff members in the care home during any violent attack. Staff can wear a discrete panic button, and press it during an emergency. This will then submit a signal to a central control which will identify the exact location of the incident, and appropriate assistance can then be arranged.

With up to date technical knowledge, a history of providing customer satisfaction and exceeding expectations, Incom Systems provide peace of mind to all their customers by offering technical support 24/7 365 days per year and providing call outs as required.

BEHA Elektro AS, Norway’s most reputable electric heating manufacturer is one of the oldest and most traditional electrical companies in Norway, still in operation under the same family ownership since its establishment in 1917.

BEHA, has introduced its environmentally friendly ‘Ijaz’ wireless controlled panel heater system to the UK. The ‘Ijaz’ allows users to control any number of BEHA heaters up to a range of 300 meters enabling full, flexible and complete command of room temperatures throughout the home.

Every BEHA panel heater can be made remotely controllable with the insertion of a special aerial receiver module which allows the user friendly touch screen ‘Ijaz’ controller to alter the heat emitted and turn the unit off and on. The heaters can be controlled individually or collectively in up to sixteen separate ‘zones’. They can also be easily set to heat only when required, ensuring lower fuel bills and minimal waste of energy. The result is a modern, flexible, easy to install and environmentally friendly alternative to old fashioned wet central heating systems. In addition the Ijaz controller has the ability to control other appliances via a wireless aerial switch for such use as turning lights off and on for security purposes. Ijaz can also be remotely operated for use such as switching on heating in a holiday home before arrival.

BEHA heaters are designed to heat homes and commercial properties. The large selection of eleven models comes in two heights and all heaters are finished in neutral white. The heaters can be painted to any desired colour and BEHA have now introduced glass fronted heaters in white, blue, orange and dark grey. Projecting from the wall just 83mm when installed, they take up very little room or wall space. Both the heaters and the wireless Ijaz system can be installed by anyone, avoiding costly plumbing or electrical bills.

An advanced low temperature heating elements with a larger than usual surface area prevent dust burn, helping those with asthma and other allergies whilst reducing the risk of discolouration to the heater, the surrounding furnishings and wall coverings.

Displaying the names of 22,500 members ranging from when the recreational club was founded in 1903 until August 2015, the ‘Wall of Names’ is laser cut from steel by Barnsley-based Cutting Technologies.

Notable figures include; Fred Done of BetFred, Manchester United Busby Babe Eddie Colman and Exeter City legend Brian Doyle, Great Britain Rugby League captain, Charlie Pawsey and Stephen Wright, the photographer of the Queen is Dead album cover by The Smiths which was photographed outside the venue.

Commissioned by London-based graphic design agency, why not associates, Cutting Technologies laser cut 60 panels which now cover an entire side of the club’s new archive room which contains hundreds of photos, film reels, records and memorabilia collected throughout the years.

Jane Robinson, director and co-founder of Cutting Technologies said: “This was a fantastic project to be involved in. To see all of the names on the wall really brings home how influential places like Salford Lads Club can be in the community.”

Salford Lads Club was founded by the Groves brothers in 1903 and was opened in January 1904 by Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouts Movement.

In 2007 Salford Lads’ Club came third in a nationwide poll to find Britain’s most iconic buildings. The club continues to provide opportunities for local young people in sport and arts.

SketchUp 2016 has recently launched and with this release we’re integrating Trimble Connect directly into SketchUp. As a refresher, Connect is Trimble’s platform for storing, syncing, referencing, sharing, and collaborating on design/build projects. Sign up for a free account, then start uploading .skp, .pdf, .dxf, .ifc. files.

With this integration, we’re packaging the current Trimble Connect Extension into the installer. The TC integration is accessible from the File menu, and will allow users to upload, pull down, and update SKP’s from Trimble Connect project folders. As you’re modelling you can even pull in and update reference SketchUp models as if they were locally hosted components. Learn more about Trimble Connect…

In SketchUp 2016, a context click on a component gives you the opportunity to reload (or swap out) a new component directly from 3D Warehouse. This action will reload every instance of that component in your model (similar to the same action in the Components Browser), so it’s a helpful method for working with proxy models. And if your component was downloaded from 3D Warehouse, you can also use the context-click to quickly access its 3DWH details page.

With this release, LayOut’s reference objects are now web friendly. That means your LayOut projects can reference and update files that are stored and synced with services like Dropbox, Google Drive, and Trimble Connect Sync. When you reference a file from any of these services (.skp or otherwise), LayOut will notify you when an update is available for your ‘web reference.’ Say goodbye to missing references when different people are working on the same .layout document within a cloud sync folder that also contains the referenced files.

We’re proud to announce our first step towards an extension ecosystem for LayOut. Using this new API, developers can now create and customize .layout files from SketchUp models. Practically, this means that other applications can import or export the *.layout file format using the C API. (This includes creating a .layout file from SketchUp.). We have several sample scripts for developers to try out at release, along with a blog post where they can learn more.

Learning and utilising SketchUp’s inference engine makes for fast and precise modelling. In this release, we’ve oiled that engine to provide slicker inferencing and locking across the board. This improvement is actually an entire set of smart tweaks we’ve made to inferencing and locking.

You can download SketchUp Pro 2016 for free on a 30 day trial. After this time, the software will revert to SketchUp Make.

Cofely GDF SUEZ in conjunction with Consort Healthcare and Mid Yorkshire NHS trust engaged with Yeoman Shield to improve the durability and sustainability of key areas within Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

Working on the prospective of offering a more pleasant and non-clinical looking environment to patients, staff and visitors, the external entrances and gateways to the departments of the hospital are decorated with printed graphics using aesthetically pleasing colours and designs.

However by the very nature of a busy hospital building used 24/7 the movement of trolleys, beds, equipment and footfall results in wall coverings at low level becoming subject to a high degree of wear and tear damage over a relatively short period of time.

The Capital Works Department working in conjunction with Consort Healthcare and Mid Yorkshire NHS were keen to improve the situation with an enhanced quality product that would not only blend in with the original design but would also make the walls more durable, sustainable and easier to maintain.

The preferred solution was Yeoman Shield Imagery with the concept of bespoke shapes and designs inlaid in a protective wall panel to blend with the existing wall coverings.

Once agreed upon, Yeoman Shield’s contract department diligently set about copying images and dimensions from the original printed graphics. This was then brought to the in house CNC machining department who replicated the shapes in FalmouthEx 2.0mm thick wall panels. The colours were matched for both the blue and green areas from their extensive colour range.

Installed by Yeoman Shield’s directly employed fixing operatives the wall protection sheets on the lower wall were matched up perfectly to the original covering on the upper wall. A protective grey plastic rail completed the new wall protection.

“Everyone from the start of the project worked hard resulting in an excellent end product which we are exceptionally pleased with.” Concluded Mr Kenward.

For more information on Yeoman Shield Imagery and the full range of wall and door protection products go to www.yeomanshield.com or call 0113 279 5854.

Natural materials are the latest trends to be transformed by tiling technology with the creation of ceramic and porcelain tiles that perfectly mimic exposed bricks, woodgrain and stone.

The new organic themed ranges by Johnson Tiles, the UK’s leading manufacturer and importer of ceramic and porcelain tiles, use the very latest in manufacturing and design technology to replicate every tiny detail found in these earthy materials – from irregularities in shade and tone to texture and size.

Darren Clanford, Creative Director of Johnson Tiles, says: “Good replications of brick work or natural effects in a tile has already been achieved, but these new collections take it to an entirely new level.

“The detailing is so perfect that there really is no need to use natural materials on walls and floors now. It’s the ideal solution, you get a surface that can easily be cleaned and maintained, but that has all the beauty you’d expect from bricks, wood and stone, without depleting these natural resources.”

Johnson Tiles has added a total of eight brand new ranges across its portfolio, across the three collections, Absolute, Select and Intro, so design professionals and specifiers can quickly identify the best tile for their project’s requirements and budget.

New ranges within Absolute:

BRICS: Inspired by the sandy texture and natural irregularity of exposed brickwork, Brics is a range of rustic porcelain slim format 250x60mm tiles for walls and floors. Six true-to-life shades – Montmartre White, Noho Red Blend, Tokyo Red, Octavia Beige, Brooklyn Brown and Docklands Grey – feature all the blends of colours found in real brick, with each Natural finish variant designed to be mixed-and-matched for unique schemes or used alone.

New ranges within Select:

STONEWORK: Stonework is a range of glazed ceramic wall tiles with a Matt finish and slim, 200x100mm size. Available in an organic range of six earthy colours – Light Tan, Hessian, Autumn Brown, Limewash, Cool Mist and Dusk – Stonework perfectly replicates all the natural textures found in stone.

BERGEN: A fresh new take on the woodgrain trend, ceramic glazed wall tile Bergen is available in six natural palette colours, including Light Cane, Driftwood, Auburn Teak, White Ash, Silver Birch and Grey Ebony. Designed to be mixed-and-matched together for maximum creativity, its compact slim 200x100mm size can be laid in any number of patterns to achieve different wood effects.

DUO: An extension of the monochrome palette, Duo’s two colours of Ice and Jet work beautifully to create simple, contemporary surfaces. The gloss textured finish of the glazed porcelain is enhanced by the range’s single impactful size of 608x316mm.

RIVEN: Available in a neutral range of four colours – Portland White, Yorkstone, Granite City and Welsh Slate – Riven is a collection of glazed porcelain wall and floor tiles that boast a stunning structured finish in large size 600x300mm format.

New ranges within Intro:

SHIMMER: A ceramic wall and glazed vitrified floor tile, Shimmer’s three contemporary colours of Warm White, Platinum and Buff Steel can be easily combined. Enhanced by a silver-effect, Satin finish, Shimmer is available in 600x200mm (wall only) and 316x316mm sizes.

STUDIO: With six colours, three finishes and two sizes, Studio is a comprehensive glazed ceramic wall tile with a palette designed to be combined to create unique surfaces. Available as a Gloss, Satin or Satin Structured finish, its colours of Tundra, Haze, Sand, Mist, Beige Mix and Grey Mix work perfectly in its two sizes of 360x275mm and border 360x50mm, with a scored option added for seamless installation.
